Accused murderer weeps in court during trial for 1983 'race hate' killing of a black man who dated a white woman

"A Georgia man on trial for allegedly killing a black man in 1983 broke down in tears on Friday listening to an audio recording of his police interrogation. ...

On Day 3 of the trial in Spalding County Superior Court, prosecutors played an audiotape of Gebhardt's interview with the police about the Coggins murder.

During the interrogation, Gebhardt denied knowing anything about the killing and used racially charged language speaking about the victim.
While the recording was being played for the jury, the defendant became emotional and was photographed using his finger and a tissue to wipe his eyes....

One of Gebhardt's former cellmates testified that Gebhardt told him he took the knife used in the killing and dumped it down a well on his property.

A GBI expert testified they found a rusty knife in that well along with a chain when they excavated it in 2017. ..."

After just a few days of testimony, jurors began deliberating Monday afternoon.

Throughout the trial, jurors heard testimony from several witnesses who said Gebhardt talked about the crime often over the years. Law enforcement officials also testified about the 1983 investigation, or lack thereof, into the murder. The prosecution called it "incomplete" and "shameful."
