EL CHAPO IS ON TRIAL. SO BUSINESS FOR HIS CARTEL IS BOOMING
The U.S. and Mexico had hoped El Chapo’s extradition would cripple the Sinaloa cartel. They were wrong.

NOV 12 2018

"When heavy floods struck Mexico’s Sinaloa state earlier this year, damaging communities and local infrastructure, help was quick to arrive. But not from the government. Residents of the small town of El Ranchito de los Angulo, not far from the Pacific Coast, were pictured by the local media receiving new mattresses, stoves and blankets packed up with caps and stickers bearing the initials JGL.

Townsfolk were filmed sending blessings to their benefactor, Joaquin Guzmán Loera, aka “El Chapo,” arguably the world’s most famous drug lord. This is the birthplace of the Sinaloa cartel he once controlled. For decades, poor countryfolk have seen him and his associates as providers who buy their product and give them work compared to a government that has, in their eyes, consistently failed them. But that isn’t the only part of Guzman’s legacy that looks set to outlive him. As he faces the early stages of his trial in a maximum-security prison in New York on drug trafficking and homicide charges, business is booming for the Sinaloa cartel.......

El Chapo might be going down, but the Sinaloa cartel, such as it is, seems to be on the up and up."

HE'S DEFENDING EL CHAPO, BECAUSE HARVEY WEINSTEIN WOULD BE TOO EASY

NOV 04 2018

"...And now Lichtman finds himself again trying to defend the seemingly indefensible as part of the legal team behind Joaquín Guzmán — aka “El Chapo.”

The alleged Mexican drug lord and head of the Sinaloa Cartel faces federal drug trafficking charges. His trial begins with jury selection on Monday in New York. Lichtman’s work is driven by fury, sure. But it’s also driven by professional pride. “You’re looking for the ultimate challenge,” he says. “Why else get out of bed in the morning?” In fact, Lichtman seeks out the cases others call unwinnable rather than cases that are high-profile but “aren’t especially difficult to win,” Lichtman says. ..."

If he is found guilty he should be able to blame his counsel. El Chapo is likable unlike rapists and and skeezy lawyers who insist those rapists are innocent. Maybe being compared to Harvey Weinstein is strategic?

Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman has pleaded not guilty to charges that he amassed a multi-billion-dollar fortune smuggling tons of cocaine and other drugs in a vast supply chain that reached New York, New Jersey, Texas and elsewhere north of the border.

Opening statements delayed in long-awaited U.S. trial of Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin (El Chapo) Guzman

NOV 13, 2018 | 12:05 PM

"The long-awaited U.S. prosecution of accused Mexican drug lord Joaquin (El Chapo) Guzman was delayed once more Tuesday.

One of the jurors chosen to determine the fate of the accused murderous cocaine dealer was excused for unspecified reasons, putting off the opening arguments expected in the morning.

It was unclear how long it might take to select a replacement, with a new juror expected to come from the original pool of 1,000 potential panelists who failed to make the cut.

The anonymous seated panel was comprised of seven women and five men to judge the man described by U.S. authorities as “the most notorious drug trafficker in the world.”

There was heavy security and a huge crowd at Brooklyn Federal Court for the start of a trial that could mark the last chapter for the notorious narco-terrorist. Heavily-armed officers stood guard outside the building located across the East River from lower Manhattan...."
