Hurricane Matthew - Sept-Oct 2016

I live at the coast in Wilmington, NC. A huge, 80' oak tree fell and landed directly on my home. The tree limbs are through the ceiling into my bedroom. There are also several more holes in the roof, one directly over the kitchen. The tree is massive and I've not been able to stay in my home. Waiting for insurance rep. Major damage. Thankful I was not in bedroom at the moment the tree fell or I wouldn't be here.

My thoughts and prayers go out to those who have experienced damage and losses.

Were you home when the tree fell?

My prayers and thoughts are with all those touched by Matthew and who continue to be and with all those who've help and continue to help.

Glad to hear from sleuthers there, that they're safe, and those with friends and family there. Hope more check in.

I'm in Central VA, but our neighbors, friends, and family in NC seem to be getting the brunt of Matthew. I have family in Fayetteville, who just moved--their old house would've been basically destroyed. In Fayetteville, it is bad, but they at least have their home. No power yet, and just got water back yesterday. 33 people have died in the state of NC b/c of this hurricane. Most of the issues are from river flooding---so sad that some who evacuated from the coast, and came inland, had to be re-evacuated b/c the hotels they were staying in were filling up with water. Also, tons of dead livestock and animals --- they have to find a way of safe disposal :(
It is amazing his length of "life" for lack of a better word - before FL he was the longest lasting cat 4-5 storm in month of Oct in history

I love Bermuda......my ashes are set to be scattered there when my ime comes......<cough>......

I so feel for those who suffered during the storms.
I developed an enormous migraine (very rare) during a 40 hour evacuation - for me, it was scary and tiring, and knowledge that the wrong decision had serious consequences was always at the forefront.

If there was no home to go to, or one with heavy flooding, there would be no pillow to lay one's head at night.
Is there anything that anyone can do?

North Carolina is a prosperous State, so presumably everyone will be okay in spite of insurance company battles?

Me too! I feel so helpless for them. Especially in Lumberton, NC and both Nichols & Dillon, SC. I grew up in Dillon and it is a very poor town. The average HOUSEHOLD income is less than $20K there. Seriously. I've seen so many people I grew up with posting on FB who've lost everything. Their house, their car, their clothes. Many of the roads were completely washed out which has them trapped in their homes with no electricity and no way to leave. All of the gas stations are sold out of gas. It's horrible. The parents of one of my HS friends had THIRTEEN trees fall in their yard! On top of all that, the crime rate in Dillon is atrocious and someone broke into Walmart during the storm and stole all of their guns. (Side note: someone also looted a gun store in Loris SC, which is right outside of Myrtle Beach, and stole over 300 pistols, hunting rifles, and semi-automatic rifles. That is TERRIFYING!)

I seriously have no idea how some of those who were already desperately struggling can recover from this. Deep down, I know that they will eventually... but it just seems really bleak right now. Both Lumberton & Nichols are COMPLETELY under water. Residents had to be evacuated from their homes by boat or helicopter. The devastation is UNREAL.

The people I saw evacuating to the Savannah Civic Center were carrying pillows and garbage bags with extra stuff. Small, ancient women were strutting up the wheel chair ranp, stomping the walker with every step - eye catching. There was a schizophrenic telling his life story on the steps. Single moms were unloading loads full of children, scolding each as they emerged, and stout women were afraid to step out of the shuttle for fear of collapsing due to being overweight.

... together for at least three days.

Nova Scotia Power said the majority of people who lost their power after floodwaters and wind ripped through Cape Breton and eastern Nova Scotia should have their electricity restored just before lunch.
Upwards of 175,000 Nova Scotia Power customers lost their power since the storm hit on Monday.
