Police: 4 University of Idaho students found dead near campus

MOSCOW, Idaho -- Police are investigating the deaths of four University of Idaho students found Sunday in a home near the campus.
Officers with the Moscow Police Department discovered the deaths when they responded to a report of an unconscious person just before noon, according to a press release from the city.
Police have called the deaths suspected homicides, which generally means the killing of one person by another, though the term doesn't necessarily suggest death was intended or committed in a criminal manner.

''The Moscow Police Department has called the deaths "homicides," and on Monday identified the victims as Ethan Chapin, a 20-year-old from Conway, Washington; Madison Mogen, a 21-year-old from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; Xana Kernodle, 20, from Avondale, Arizona; and Kaylee GonCalves, 21, from Rathdrum, Idaho.''

The four University of Idaho students who were found dead in off-campus housing were identified on Monday as Madison Mogen, 21, top left, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, bottom left, Ethan Chapin, 20, center, and Xana Kernodle, 20, right. They are pictured just hours before their untimely deaths

The four were found dead after police responded to a call about an unconscious person in a home on Sunday

'With a crime of this magnitude, it's very difficult to work through,' Bettge told The New York Times. Bettge later said the deaths were a 'targeted, one-off situation,' according to The Spokesman-Review.

A chilling last photo posted by Goncalves hours before the bodies were discovered showed the four standing on a house porch smiling with their arms around each other.

Kernodle and Chapin appeared to have been dating, according to her Instagram that featured photos of the couple cuddled up. Mogen and Goncalves were members of the Alpha Phi sorority on campus.

Goncalves' family issued a statement on social media and said the 21-year-old was only a few months shy of moving across the country for a new job.

'She was looking forward to her job in tech starting on 1/1, a move to Texas, road trips in her just purchased Range Rover, and a trip she planned out to Europe,' the family wrote. 'She'd never stop fighting for us and demanding the truth and justice and neither will we.'

''Idaho State Board of Education
MOSCOW, Idaho — The Idaho State Board of Education held a special Board meeting in response to the murder of four University of Idaho students.

Board President Kurt Liebich began with the following statement on the students’ deaths.

“The news out of Moscow is absolutely devastating. On behalf of the Idaho State Board of Education and the Board of Regents of the University of Idaho, I offer our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the students who were murdered. I do not understand how this could occur and that students’ lives would be lost to such a heinous act. The University of Idaho has counseling and support services in place for students and staff and the Office of the State Board of Education is standing by to help if needed. My fellow Board members and I are holding the loved ones and the University of Idaho’s entire campus community in our thoughts.”

‘We certainly have a crime’: Police search for suspect in University of Idaho homicides

Even as details remain scant while a homicide investigation continues to unfold, Moscow police on Monday evening told the Idaho Statesman that they are actively searching for a suspect after finding four University of Idaho students dead at a home just off campus Sunday afternoon. Moscow police Capt. Anthony Dahlinger declined to say whether he would characterize the deaths as violent, but reaffirmed that each of the deceased students is considered a victim. None of the four students are believed responsible for the deaths that have torn a sudden hole in the college-focused North Idaho city, he said. “All I can say is the deaths are ruled a homicide at this point, and homicide and murder are synonymous,” Moscow police Capt. Anthony Dahlinger told the Statesman by phone. “We certainly have a crime here, so we are looking for a suspect.”
Moscow Mayor Art Bettge revealed in a phone interview with the Statesman that the crime happened early Sunday morning, between 3 and 4 a.m. Pacific time. Police said they did not receive an initial report of an unconscious student in the 1100 block of King Road until almost noon that day. Ethan Chapin, 20, of Mount Vernon, Washington, was one of the victims. His mother, Stacy Chapin, told the Statesman in a Facebook message that a friend found the bodies.

It looks like Kaylee & Maddie (Madison) were friends for most of their lives:

….
No one is in custody. However, the city said it did not believe there is ongoing community risk based on the police’s preliminary investigation.
….
Friends of the Chapin family said Ethan Chapin was beloved in his community. He was a triplet with one brother and one sister.
"You just couldn't ask for better kids," said neighbor Dave Hayton.

After graduating from high school, all three siblings decided to attend the University of Idaho.
Chapin and his brother were members of the same fraternity.

….
The Moscow Police Department is asking anyone who may have information about the suspected homicides to call them at 208-882-COPS or 208-882-2677.

''The university also revealed some further details about the four students, who were all aged between 20 and 21:
  • Ethan Chapin was a freshman from Mount Vernon, Washington, and was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He majored in recreation, sport and tourism management in the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences.
  • Xana Kernodle, was a junior from Post Falls majoring in marketing in the College of Business and Economics, and belonged to the Pi Beta Phi sorority.
  • Madison Mogen, was a senior from Coeur d'Alene majoring in marketing in the College of Business and Economics.
  • Kaylee Goncalves was a senior from Rathdrum majoring in general studies in the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences.''
''He added information could not be released "without jeopardizing the integrity of the investigation."

Bettge walked that statement back, saying he arrived at that conclusion based on a process of elimination.

"We don't really know what it was," Bettge said.

"The mayor described the crime scene as complex''

''BOISE, Idaho -- Investigators are looking for a suspect in the deaths of four University of Idaho students whose bodies were found at an off-campus home during the weekend, a newspaper reported.

Authorities in the city of Moscow, Idaho, have released little information about the deaths, including the cause, but have said all four students are victims and that there is no active risk to the community.''

''The students likely died between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m., but they weren't discovered for hours, Bettge said.

“The police got there at noon, nothing happened in the interim and nothing happened afterward, so it seemed to be a unique occurrence that was not apt to be repeated,” said Bettge. That timeline helped authorities determine that there was not an active risk, he said.

Dahlinger declined to confirm or deny Bettge’s description of the timeline.''

Lucca Musick and Decker Rilenge live in an apartment building next to the residence where the four students were found.

They were cleaning their apartment Sunday when a friend messaged Rilenge and told them about the reported homicide. Musick and Rilenge looked out the window and saw police cars, along with a group of women crying while draped in emergency blankets.

“You don’t think something like that’s going to happen here,” Rilenge said.

Musick said they told a police officer they could hear loud music Saturday night, indicating there was a party going on in the neighborhood. They said parties are a regular occurrence in that area.

Rilenge said they did not hear any screaming or gunshots that night.

Ethan Chapin’s mother, Stacey Chapin, told the Idaho Statesman on Tuesday morning that the four students were stabbed. She refuted speculation about the case, including a New York Times report that called it a “crime of passion.

“They were stabbed. We got the call,” Chapin said. “I don’t want people to make assumptions about our kids. It wasn’t drugs and it was definitely not some passion thing between these kids. Someone entered the house.”

According to the article above.

He confirmed that none of the victims were the alleged attacker. He also confirmed that the unconscious person police initially responded to Sunday on King Road was one of the four victims.

“Gruesome. I’ve never seen anything like this in the 16 years I’ve been in this position.”

"complicated and complex" starting at about :58

From the article: "Four University of Idaho students found dead in an off-campus home were targeted, and the killer or killers used a knife or other “edged weapon” in the attack, police said Tuesday..."

“Police in Moscow, Idaho, on Sunday initially responded to reports of an unconscious person on King Road around noon and found the four deceased students upon arrival.”
[Clearly, one of the victims made it to the street and died. Passerby(s) reported it as unconscious.]

“One neighbor said there was a lot of noise coming from the house on Saturday evening prior to the attack.”
[IMO: A neighbor ** or another roommate* went berserk about the party noise and left after killing the victims.]

* 6 beds
[This is a six bedroom house so there are 2-3 bedrooms unaccounted for.]

** Neighbor proximity: 1122 KING RD, MOSCOW, ID 83843 | ConnectedInvestors.com
[This picture shows the neighbor’s house is VERY close.]

The FBI in Salt Lake City confirmed through a spokesperson they are assisting Moscow PD with the homicide investigation involving four students at U of I.

They then referred any questions I had to the Moscow PD because they are the lead investigation agency.

Just went to the Moscow Police Department to try and speak with Chief James Fry and Captain Anthony Dahlinger. In return I was told, once again, that it was an active investigation and that they were not available to speak, nor would there be a press conference.

FYI - a follow up said the person had been contacted by police and was cooperating. Rsbm

When asked if he thinks the killer is still out in the community, Bettge said, “that would be the conclusion that I would draw.”

The four University of Idaho students knifed to death in the early hours of Sunday morning were killed so brutally, blood was left oozing through the walls of their rented home, DailyMail.com can reveal.

Exclusive DailyMail.com photos show blood dribbling down the side of the house while evidence markers could be seen on the interior walls and back porch.

Police sources told DailyMail.com that the scene inside the home is ‘the worst they’ve ever seen’ with the victims left to bleed out following the brutal early morning attack.

'There was blood everywhere,' said one source close to the investigation.

'We have investigators who have been on the job for 20, even 30, years, and they say they have never seen anything like this.'

<snip>

One of the victims – understood to be 20-year-old Ethan Chapin, of Conway, Washington – was discovered on the floor on the second level of the three-story home.

On Tuesday, police were seen collecting the contents of trash cans close to the slightly run-down fray-paneled home as part of the search for the ‘edged weapon’ they believe was used in the killings.

The trash was taken to a local garbage depot where hazmat-suited cops were seen sifting through garbage bags in a screened-off shed.

Rsbm “Officers at the scene on Tuesday described a bloody crime scene, particularly on the upper floors of the house.”

Rsbm - extended interview with Ethan’s parents.

UPDATE: Just spoke with Latah Co. Prosecutor Bill Thompson about the homicide investigation. He understands & shares our frustration with the misinformation surrounding the deaths of the 4 UI students. He says there may be a press conference held tomorrow afternoon with Moscow PD and Idaho State Police. KREM 2 News
