WATCH LIVE: Trooper’s Wife Bathtub Murder Trial - ID v. Daniel Howard - Day One

On February 2nd, 2021, Idaho State Trooper Daniel Howard called the police to report that his wife, Kendy Howard, had allegedly shot herself. However, when Idaho police arrived at the gruesome scene, they believed that the gunshot wound was not self-inflicted. Two years later, Howard reportedly turned himself into the Kootenai County jail after police issued a warrant for his arrest, believing he was connected to the murder of his wife. Howard now faces trial for first-degree murder and felony domestic battery on his wife.

Their daughter, Brooke Wilkins, said in an Oct. 1, 2021, post to Facebook that her mother was found shot to death and naked in a bathtub.“He called it in as a suicide,” she wrote, referring to her father. “There are multiple reasons why this doesn’t make sense but I don’t want to interfere with the ongoing investigation.”#DanielHoward

COEUR d’ALENE — Kendy Howard was a loving mother and grandmother.

That’s what her daughter, Brooke Wilkins, told jurors Thursday when she took the stand in the first-degree murder trial of 58-year-old Daniel Howard.

The former Idaho State Police trooper is accused of killing his wife, Athol resident Kendy Howard, then placing her in the bathtub, shooting her and staging the scene to look like she died by suicide.

Prosecutors say he murdered her three years ago because he’d learned she was having an affair and didn’t want to split $2 million in shared assets with her in a divorce.

“My mom was my best friend,” Wilkins said, smiling through tears. “She was my daughter’s best friend. I can’t ask for a better role model or just a better person to be around. I didn’t even have to find her and choose her. She was just there. I was lucky enough to just have her there.”

Wilkins said her stepfather, Daniel Howard, behaved lovingly toward her mother in public, but in private, he frequently insulted her.

COEUR d’ALENE — Police and death investigators said Kendy Howard’s death appeared suspicious from the beginning.
Daniel C. Howard, 57, is accused of killing his wife at their Athol home Feb. 2, 2021. The former state trooper has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and felony domestic battery.

Prosecutors said Daniel Howard killed Kendy Howard by asphyxiating her, then placed her body in the bathtub, shot her in the mouth and staged the scene to look like she shot herself.

In court Wednesday, jurors heard Daniel Howard’s 911 call, which he made after he said he found his wife dead.

This is an excellent trial if anyone is looking for one to watch. The sound sucked at the beginning, but earbuds really helped. The prosecution has put forward a very compelling case with a ton of great witnesses. Justice for Kendy!

COEUR d’ALENE — The night his wife died, Daniel Howard told police he believed she shot herself because he wanted a home she planned to buy in her hometown to be liquidated as part of their impending divorce.

Daniel Howard is on trial for first-degree murder and felony domestic battery. Prosecutors say he killed his wife, Kendy Howard, the night of Feb. 2, 2021, then staged the scene to make it appear as if she died by suicide. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Body camera footage played in court Tuesday showed Daniel Howard’s conversation with deputies after they arrived at the home in Athol where Kendy Howard died.

COEUR d’ALENE — Kendy Howard’s body was “significantly moved” after her death, a blood spatter expert said in court.

Prosecutors rested their case Wednesday in the first-degree murder trial of Daniel Howard, a former Idaho State Police trooper accused of killing his wife, Kendy Howard, in February 2021, then staging the scene to look like she died by suicide. Daniel Howard has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and felony domestic battery.

Randolph Beasley, a forensic consultant who specializes in bloodstain analysis, was among the final witnesses for the prosecution.

Same article linked above:

Randolph Beasley, a forensic consultant who specializes in bloodstain analysis, was among the final witnesses for the prosecution.

Beasley told jurors that three different blood stains on Kendy Howard’s chest, nose and mouth appeared to change direction after blood began to flow.

“One particular stain made a right-hand turn, showing her body was moved,” he said.

Daniel Howard told police he found his wife dead in the bathtub after she shot herself in the mouth.

Lynn Acebedo, chief deputy coroner for Kooteani County, previously testified that she noticed the blood around Kendy Howard’s mouth and cheek appeared to have flowed upward, against gravity, in “the wrong way for someone who has a head down in a bathtub from a gunshot wound to the mouth.”

Beasley made the same observation. Using a Styrofoam head and fake blood, he demonstrated to jurors how Kendy Howard’s head would have to move in order for blood to flow the way it did.

“Her head had to flip way back for that stain to make that little turn to the right,” he said.

The change in blood flow pattern was consistent with Kendy Howard’s body moving after she began bleeding, Beasley said. Trauma surgeon Dr. Ryan Rambaran previously testified that she could not have moved on her own after she was shot because the bullet severed her spinal cord.

Beasley said he believed the best explanation for the change in blood flow pattern was that someone picked Kendy Howard up by the arms and maneuvered her body while she was in the bathtub, causing her head to flop backward.

From 2015.

First District Court Judge Benjamin Simpson imposed a suspended prison term of three years and placed Howard on probation. However, Simpson also ordered Howard to serve 120 days in local jail and perform 600 hours of community service.

The judge said he believed Howard acted under considerable stress brought about by his return to duty following a 2011 police shooting in which he killed a woman, followed by Howard learning his wife had an affair with his best friend.

Howard, 48, resigned from the Idaho State Police on Nov. 14 after 19 years on the job. In a plea bargain, he admitted to fraud for using a fictitious name in a title application for a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, and admitted to misdemeanor possession of a white-tailed deer without a tag.

COEUR d’ALENE — The former medical examiner who performed Kendy Howard’s autopsy stands by his opinion that she died from a gunshot wound.

Former Spokane County Medical Examiner Dr. John Howard testified Thursday in the murder trial of Daniel Howard, who is of no relation. Daniel Howard is accused of asphyxiating his wife, Kendy Howard, in February 2021 and then shooting her in the mouth to make it appear as if she died by suicide.

Kootenai County doesn’t employ a medical examiner, so after police responded to the Athol home where Kendy Howard was found deceased in the bathtub, her body was sent to Spokane County for autopsy.

There will be no court proceedings today. The trial will resume Monday.
