IL - Six Martinez family members murdered, Chicago, 4 Feb 2016 *Arrests* *guilty*

Chicago police on Thursday found the bodies of four men, one woman and a child inside a home on the city's South Side in what police said was being investigated as an apparent multiple homicide.

Interim Chicago Police Superintendent John Escalante said it appeared to be an isolated incident and there was no wider threat to the community, but police added extra patrols in the neighborhood as a precaution. Asked whether it could have been a murder-suicide, he said it was "a possibility."

This story has been updated to reflect that police say deaths are being investigated as an apparent homicide and to clarify the interim police superintendent's comment about the possibility that it's a murder suicide.

Either way, it's terribly sad. My thoughts are with the surviving family.

It does not sound like a typical family murder-suicide. It may have been a family member though. I wonder if there are other sons or cousins that are estranged from the family?

I would also put an emphasis on the plural possibility. Not only controlling six people, but tying them up, would seem to be difficult for one person to do with out any assistance. This would appear to be so even if he was armed.

I would think it would be hard to kill 6 people in different areas of the home without a gun? Wouldn't someone hear and run ? To me it would get loud ?
Idk seems like there would have to be more than one killer ?

I am thinking he got them as they came home, a couple at a time. Maybe the senior couple was killed first, while the boys were in school and their Mom was at work. Then the boys were attacked when they came home, then the Mother?

One of the first officers to arrive at the brick bungalow on the city's Southwest Side said at least one of the victims appeared to be stabbed to death and described a gruesome crime scene, according to a recording of police radio traffic of the incident.
"Send a sarge over here," the officer tells the dispatcher. "This is a bloody mess."

:tsktsk: I wonder if the younger woman had a boyfriend or estranged/ex-husband.

Autopsies sure seem to show it wasn't a murder-suicide IMO. I hope we hear more soon about this poor family. How tragic. It takes a real monster to do this.

I was wondering the same thing. She was the daughter of the older couple and the younger adult male was the son of the older couple. The two young boys must have a dad out there somewhere and she may have had a boyfriend.

The father of the two children who lived in the house is in Mexico, Martinez said
* * * * * *

Hmmmm, So he lives in the house but was in Mexico,. He will definitely come under intense scrutiny.

I believe it was a neighbor interviewed in one of the articles who said the younger woman lived upstairs with her two children. She didn't mention a husband. Maybe they've been separated awhile. She might've been seeing someone else. I don't know, but this seems so personal. And she was the only one shot. BF or spouse would be at the top of the suspect list, unless there are other circumstances that would point elsewhere.

ETA: It wasn't a neighbor. It was a relative in Texas who spoke with a reporter.

From the same article:

"Through the years, the grandparents allowed relatives to stay in their spacious house until they could get on their feet."

I wonder if they recently helped a non-relative.

I hate to think that the father could have stabbed his young sons to death. I know, I know, it happens. But it does not seem to make sense in this case. It feels more like an angry estranged relative or an ex boyfriend that was really angry and high on something. :sigh:

eta: unless of course the father was in Mexico because he was kicked out of the home...

Or he's hiding out because he owes someone money; or otherwise messed with the wrong person. So that person had his family killed as retribution. I'm just thinking out loud.

oh….hadn't thought of that. this one does look like a brutal cartel type hit. They do kill entire families sometimes.

It appears police discovered a grisly scene: The bodies showed signs of trauma and were found in different places throughout the single-family home, interim police Superintendent John Escalante said.

One of the dead was a child, probably between 10 and 12 years old.

"This is shocking, and I don’t know what to think,” she said. “We’re trying to find out what’s going on.”

Finally, about four hours after police found the bodies of five adults and one child around 10 years old, Martinez was resigned to the idea that they were her relatives. But she still had many questions about what happened inside the brick bungalow in the 5700 block of South California Avenue.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago police say the family of six found dead in their home in Chicago's Gage Park neighborhood was "targeted."

A police spokesperson said this does not appear to be a random act of violence resulting from a home invasion or burglary. But what exactly led to this family being targeted is still a mystery.

Police found the bodies of two men, two women and two boys - ages 10 and 13 - during a well-being check Thursday. They were all members of the same family.
