MA MA - Michael 'Mickey' Brougham, 54, Loudon, 25 June 2010

Bumping for Mickey. I know he's been gone a while but we think of him often as this is the area we grew up in.

Bumping for Mickey: It will soon be seven years since he was last seen by his nephew.....

Picked this case at random. I don't have any inside info, so I'm just spitballing some ideas:

What do we know about Mickey's personal life? Was he dating anyone? Did he have any known grudges?

How about his business? It says he was self-employed. Was he having money troubles?

It's doubted whether he attended the speedway. He left his truck and motorbike behind, and there's no evidence he hitchhiked. Therefore, he either went with someone else or he never left in the first place.

I don't know how many people go to these things but I'm guessing they're reasonably well-attended? I don't think there's anything particularly distinctive about Mickey to make him stand out from the crowd. But I agree with the family's suspicions that he never actually made it.

Smells of foul play to me. I think the perpetrator knew that Mickey was going to the speedway and deliberately ditched his phone, wallet, and watch nearby as a red herring. Obviously they were close enough to Mickey to know his immediate plans.

Motive? No idea, hence my questions about his private life.

Family awaits answers in decade-old mystery of missing Belchertown man

From the article:
“We feel very strongly that there are people who know exactly what happened,” his sister, Cindy Brown, said Monday. She declined to name those people, who she says reside in the Belchertown area.

Bumping for Mickey. This case is really baffling, like he just vanished into thin air. Foul play definitely seems likely: he ran into trouble at the race track, or something happened before his trip, and his personal items were strewn around the area of the race track to throw off the investigation. If it’s the former, it was probably a crime of opportunity. If it’s the latter, and I feel like this is more probable, we’re looking at a premeditated crime by someone he likely knew. I wonder if his family suspects anyone in particular. Hopefully they find Mickey soon.

Details of Disappearance

Brougham was last seen in Belchertown, Massachusetts at 2:00 p.m. on June 25, 2010. His nephew, a police officer, saw him driving his truck and they spoke to each other before Brougham continued on. He apparently planned to attend a NASCAR race at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway racetrack in Loudon, New Hampshire. He has never been heard from again.

He wallet, containing his identification and credit cards, was found across Route 106 from the speedway two days later, and his cellular phone was used in the area that same day. His phone and watch were found about a mile from where his wallet had been, near the north side of the speedway complex.

Brougham left his pickup truck and motorcycle at his home in the 100 block of Jabish Street in Belchertown, and no one actually saw him at the racetrack. It's unclear whether he ever actually arrived there, and his family doesn't believe he did.

Brougham owned a business, Michael Brougham Excavating, which was founded by his father. He is unmarried and childless, and at the time of his disappearance he lived alone with his pet cat. He didn't lay out extra food for his cat and didn't make arrangements for anyone to take care of it, an indication that he didn't plan to be gone for long. He was close to his family and it's uncharacteristic of him to leave without warning.

Although investigators stated there was no evidence of foul play in his disappearance, his loved ones are afraid for his safety. His case remains unsolved.
