Andrew Thomas, a journalist with Al-Jazeera, was on board the P-3 Orion aircraft when it spotted the objects that might have come from MH370.
Footage from the flight and Thomas' interview with the captain, Flight Lieutenant Josh Williams, is expected to be released shortly.

Despite reports to contrary, I can confirm 5 objects seen by crew, 4 'confirmed' (seen by 2+ people) and 2 photographed. #mh370

black box search:

The US Navy said Monday it was sending a black box locator to an area of the southern Indian Ocean being scoured for the missing Malaysian jet, following a cluster of weekend debris sightings.

_____

The Towed Pinger Locator has highly sensitive listening capability so that if the wreck site is located, it can hear the black box pinger down to a depth of about 20,000 feet (6,100 meters), Cmdr. Chris Budde, a U.S. Seventh Fleet operations officer, said in a statement.

_____________

Budde stressed that bringing in the black box detector, which is towed behind a vessel at slow speeds and can pick up "pings" from a black box to a maximum depth of 20,000 feet, was a precautionary measure.

Confirmed so far:

Mangosteens in wooden crates
200kg lithium batteries
Electrical equipment (radios)

One AA lithium battery according to my scales weighs 16g, so to put 200kg of them in perspective is 12,500 AA batteries.

That is my fact for the evening!

Edit. No idea what a mangosteen weighs.

9:59pm: The crew aboard the P-3 Orion were "running on adrenaline" after making the discovery, the plane's captain Flight Lieutenant Josh Williams said.

"The first object was rectangular, slightly below the ocean, the second object was circular, also slightly below the ocean."

He described the cylindrical object as about 2metres long and about 30cm wide; and the second object as "also cylindrical and shaped in a rough fish hook."

The mystery cargo they are keeping all secret squirrel about... All the Malaysia Gov't need to do is declare it as "An item of national interest" and the secret stays with them I believe...

10:29pm: Although AMSA and Mr Abbott said the crew reported finding two objects, Flight Lieutenant Williams has described seeing four items.

Every single day, every single flight carries on board hundreds of Lithium batteries.

Mobiles phones
Laptops
Ipads

Every passenger usually has at least one of these... or all of them.

Why are you all so suspect on the lithium batteries?

Agreed.

Also, keep in mind most of our batteries are made in China and surrounding areas, they have to get here and everywhere else somehow.

Here is a video of a flare from a P -3 Orion maritime patrol.
Maybe something like the flare that has indicated the latest debris.

Because someone mentioned 57 threads ago that they are flammable

.. on the manifest:

“To me, there is no reason why they wouldn’t declare the cargo manifest unless you’ve got something to hide,” he said. “There is no reason you wouldn’t have given it to AMSA (the Australian Maritime Safety Authority) on the first day of the search.” AMSA has requested a cargo manifest for Flight M370 from Malaysia Airlines.

... Malaysian authorities to date have refused to release it, insisting the document is with the police who are conducting their own investigation into the cause of the plane’s disappearance.

“There is certainly no reason why they shouldn’t share a cargo manifest with a legitimate search agency because it will only contribute to the search effort,” Professor Jason Middleton, the head of the school of aviation at the University of New South Wales, said.

“I would have viewed that (not sharing the information) as unusual.”

Professor Middleton said the only reason he could think of for not sharing the information was that something of “Malaysian national interest” was being carried on the aircraft. “But in that case you could just redact that bit,” he said.

“One of the possibilities is that someone put something on board that wasn’t supposed to be there,” he said.

“Here we are, Australia at great cost looking for the aircraft, and Malaysia won’t even cooperate and tell us what was on the aircraft,” he said.

I think batteries are only flammable when they are engaged in something.

Watching Sky News who have just shown video from one of the aircraft, you could see the flares on the water (looked like white smoke) I couldn't see anything else in the water though, but maybe the cameras are not showing what they have found purposely?

Flight Lieutenant Josh Williams was pilot of plane which saw objects. At least 3 were 1 metre or more long. Different shapes and colours

Yep - Who's to say they weren't just sending a bunch of laptop batteries to a customer in China?

Its very common for electronics producers to have items supplied and made in other countries, then shipped to their factory, rebadged with their logo/brand and assembled into the final item - Sony Laptops for instance are a combination of Fujitsu (Japan), Samsung (Korea) and other parts - everywhere from Malaysia to USA.

Not sure if they are shipped in a shell or not:

the fruit increases in size until its exocarp is 6–8 centimetres (2.4–3.1 in) in outside diameter, remaining hard until a final, abrupt ripening stage.

The edible endocarp of the mangosteen is botanically defined as an aril with the same shape and size as a tangerine 4–6 centimetres (1.6–2.4 in) in diameter, but is white.

Upon arrival in the US in 2007, fresh mangosteens sold up to $45 per pound in speciality produce stores in New York City. Fresh mangosteens sell for around $8 a pound in the US.

Despite efforts described above to grow mangosteen in the Western Hemisphere, nearly the entire supply is imported from Thailand.

Or maybe smoke markers just make for more visually exciting footage...

Everything you wanted to know about mangosteens, except whether they float.
