MD MD - JASON THOMAS SCOTT, suspected mother/daughter SK

Would you be able to make a larger timeline of both double-homicides? I happen to be in MD for the week and I'm thinking of a train ride to this area.

Also, I'm confused about the black Cadillac connection people have been making. I'm not sure how it fits in, I thought the black Cadillac was burned in the Lofton double-homicide?

The other attack in Upper Marlboro scares me. I wonder what's going on? Why was someone left alive? Was this planned or accidental? Oh, and this person couldn't have been going on foot, because it's about an hour and a half to walk through all of these crime scenes from Webbwood Ct to Upper Marlboro.

I don't think I'll have time to do a detailed timeline. Gotta work, Easter coming up, etc.

The black Cadillac was mentioned by the police as a vehicle used in burglaries in the area. The vehicle burned was a Nissan.

Okay, thank you for clarifying that. Has anyone read or heard any new information on the case? I meant to go to Largo while I was in MD but sadly I didn't get the chance.

I have not heard anything on this investigation but there is definitely something wrong in Prince George's County.

This happened in Suitland, about 8-10 minutes from Largo, a few days ago:

This is from yesterday, Brandywine is about 20-25 minutes from Largo:

I know the circumstances our different but 4 people dying in burning cars in the same county within 6 weeks raises someconcerns.

These do seem to be isolated incidents. However, we can't rule out the possibility that the cases have a weak link, not because of the MO, but because of the location. This may give an inadvertent clue to finding the murderer(s) of the Dewitts and the Loftons. What if the murderer(s) happen(s) to live in one of those communities? Although I still feel the culprit(s) live(s) in the community near the original cases, this could be a slight development, if at all.

A photo of the burned car that carried the Dewitts can be viewed here:

Photos of a shrine in front of the Dewitts home:

Are the police now saying the Lofton and Dewitts' murders are not connected?

Finally found the cause of death: asphyxiation http://www.wusa9.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=83704&catid=189

Still doesn't explain why the Dewitts were abducted and the Loftons killed in bed at home.

This article is date 03/31/09 and stated one of the Dewitts died in close proximity to her killer (strangled?) and that more than 1 killer was involved: http://news.ncmonline.com/news/view_article.html?article_id=a5425c5e538b47ab2aa271c9fe20cd7f

Were the missing purses ever recovered?

A new article from the Washington post about the case includes:

But an FBI profiler has concluded that the slayings that gripped residents in the Largo area this year are not the work of a serial killer, authorities said. In fact, the profiler said, the double homicides are not connected at all, according to county police investigators handling the cases.

Whoever killed the Loftons seemed to be more organized, less messy, they said. Unlike in the Dewitt case, the killer or killers made no effort to take the bodies elsewhere, they said.

and.......

At the top of the list of questions investigators have is how Karissa Lofton got home from work at the Golden Corral restaurant the night of the killings, Nelson said. She was seen leaving at 9 p.m., family members have said, and her mother typically picked her up.

But detectives said they don't think Karen Lofton showed up at the restaurant that night. Family members told investigators that Karen Lofton religiously armed her burglar alarm before going anywhere. On the night of Jan. 25, investigators said, security company records showed it was never armed.

Shortly after 2:30 a.m. Jan. 26, sources have said, Karissa called 911 from her home, whispering as she told a dispatcher that she and her mother had been shot. She spoke as if the shooter or shooters were still in the house, sources have said.

The Dewitt killer or killers, on the other hand, were more "haphazard," Schartner said. He revealed for the first time that the women were dead before their bodies were loaded into a stolen car. The killer then drove the car past the house from which it was taken and set it ablaze in a driveway in plain view. After that, Schartner said, detectives think the suspect or suspects fled through a nearby back yard and into woods. A canine unit was able to trace the trail, he said.

Neither case has been solved, no purses have been recovered and profilers have been known to be wrong. If this was a group of men who committed these murders, the profile can be off base in my opinion.

Colette, thanks for the update. I agree, profilers have been known to be wrong, but it would have been nice for this information to have been released much earlier. I guess, for now, we'll have to keep our eyes and ears open, eh?

Unfortunately there is still no conclusion to either of the mother/daughter murder cases.
There was a recent memorial gathering for the Loftons over a year since their murders.
Hope some press will stir something up.....

"No one has been arrested or named as a suspect in either the Lofton or the Dewitt case, said police spokeswoman Capt. Mistinette Mints, adding that both cases remain active."

Sounds like someone needs to start reviving the case. We all know that the police get backed up with stuff like this. No word on the boyfriend?

BIG NEWS.... there is a person of interest! And YES the cases ARE connected, plus ANOTHER CASE connected too!!

According to sources, detectives have been able to make an indictable case against the 27-year-old person of interest only in the DeWitt murders. Multiple sources, however, say the person of interest is also a person of interest in the Lofton murders and the 2008 murder of a Bowie woman whose body was found in her burning home.

The person of interest, who has not been publicly identified by law enforcement because he has not been charged or indicted in any of the crimes, is being held on unrelated federal gun charges.

The man is a stranger to the victims, and the sources said there was no obvious motive for the killings, making them think that he is a serial killer. Detectives are investigating whether the man might be tied to other unsolved slayings in the area.

The man has not been charged in the mother-daughter killings, the sources said. Authorities are making sure they have a good case and need not hurry because the man is in prison on other charges, they said

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/07/19/AR2010071905272.html

Chief Hylton said that when the enormity of the case is known, the as-of-yet unnamed 27-year-old Largo man will go down as "one of America's most notorious criminals" and a "serial killer."

This sounds pretty big, I hope they name him soon.

Wow! This sounds huge. I really wonder if he's tied to this case from the Missing but Not Forgotten forum:

[ame="http://www.websleuths.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11146"]OK OK-Lauria Bible, 16, and Ashley Freeman, 16, Welch, 1999 MERGED - Websleuths Crime Sleuthing Community[/ame]

I hope they start spilling more beans soon!

Wow! This does sound big! Thanks for the update collette! It is intriguing that the source said the POI is well educated. That just blows my mind! Should we begin sleuthing inmates from Largo? I am curious.

It seems there has been a trend of LEA's everywhere in solving cases these past few months. I sure hope that trend continues.

I hope to hear more updates on this soon!

Serial killer' in custody for 2009 Largo-area mother-daughter homicides
http://www.gazette.net/stories/07202010/prinnew152357_32550.php

snip
Karen Lofton's ex-husband, Kirkland Lofton Sr., said he feels relieved but still lacks closure.

"Even though my ex and my daughter are gone, I would hate to see it happen to someone else or my sons," Kirkland Lofton said. "There will never be a punishment good enough."

He remains unconvinced that the Lofton and Dewitt cases are related.

"Nothing makes me think they're linked. I have nothing to make me believe that," Lofton said

It doesn't sound like the family is convince that they got the monster

another snip
Karen Lofton's niece, Tonya Douglass, said she learned Monday from media reports there was a suspect in custody.

"It just stirs up a lot of emotions. Hopefully they have the correct person," said Douglass, 40. "My heart goes out to the Dewitts, and I hope there is some resolution for them as well as there is for us and that justice can prevail."

He holds two master's degrees and was so good that he duped an FBI profiler into concluding that the killings were unrelated, the sources said. (except we KNEW they were related!)

He also is being investigated in connection with other crimes in the Washington area and as far away as Texas and Florida, Hylton and law enforcement sources said.

He also was not specific about the evidence connecting the man to each killing, saying only that it places him at "the scene of the crime." He said detectives were led to the man after receiving a tip on an unrelated case.

A source said the man once worked for a delivery service, and investigators are trying to determine whether he used his position to get access to a database with addresses to find his victims.

He remains jailed on weapons and carjacking charges and a charge that he coerced a minor female into sexually explicit conduct so he could take a digital photo, the sources said.

I sitting on edge of my seat waiting for a name and facts so I hope it come fast.

I follow what I could on this case and always felt it was serial killer.

Very little coverage on both cases.

It sounds like the car that the last set of victims was in was not their car. That car might have had the keys taken at an earlier break-in and later the car was taken at 4AM. The car was then set on fire at a vacant home with the victims inside.

colette I am bumping this post. it sound like you might been right on with this clue.

~snipped~

Sources with knowledge of the cases said the suspect's two master's degrees include at least one in computer science. Detectives also found computer files and textbooks indicating that he had researched evidence-gathering and forensic science, sources said.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/07/20/AR2010072006211.html

This is chilling! I wonder if he followed the cases that he was involved in thru online forums? That is a scary thought!

Glad he is behind bars!
