A nation fed up with ‘femicide’ shuns Pistorius

GEOFFREY YORK
JOHANNESBURG — The Globe and Mail

A heavily bloodied cricket bat, found at the luxury home of Mr. Pistorius after the shooting death of Reeva Steenkamp on Thursday morning, suggests he may have used the bat “to viciously assault her,” according to a report in a respected South African newspaper, City Press, citing three unnamed sources close to the police investigation.

The newspaper reported that Ms. Steenkamp’s skull had been “crushed”; that one shot had been fired from the athlete’s pistol in the bedroom before the remaining three shots were fired through a bathroom door; and that the “intruder” claim was impossible because there were no signs of forced entry and because both of them had slept in the bedroom before the shooting

Mr. Pistorius and his family have assembled a crack team of high-priced lawyers, a top pathologist, and even a well-known London spin doctor – former British tabloid editor Stuart Higgins, whose clients have included British Airways and top English soccer clubs.

Much of the backlash is sparked by growing reports that Mr. Pistorius had a history of anger issues, a fascination with guns, and several alleged incidents of threats and physical confrontations involving women and men. He had applied for licences for seven guns, including a .223 semi-automatic rifle, according to the South African newspaper Beeld.

Regarding the layout of the bathroom, again, roughly translated from The Beeld:

All four shots Paralympic hero Oscar Pistorius allegedly fired at Reeva Steenkamp was designed which she sat on the toilet.

All four shots hit her.

The toilet is on the left side of the en suite bathroom. The shots were fired through the door of the bathroom.

This means that Pistorius had shot in an oblique direction to could hit her, a source told Beeld said

The source denied allegations that Steenkamp with a cricket bat assaulted.

According to him, the bullet Steenkamp hit in the head caused the wound to her head and not an assault with a bat.

Kenny Oldwage, Pistorius's attorney, told Beeld that the family had already started investigating team, but would not elaborate on who it is.

He and Adv. Barry Roux SC will be assisted by another a top pathologist Dr. Reggie Perumal, and other experts.

Stuart Higgins, a British spin doctor for including British Airways, swimmer Mark Foster and the Manchester United soccer team, will handle media relations. He is a oudredakteur of the British Sun.

Sounds like lovers quarrel regarding Reeva's ex is possible motive, but, I can't quite make out the translation. By SMS, I think they mean texting or instant messaging. Sounds like Hougaard and Pistorius boxed against each other for fitness training?

Oscar will be strongly defending his actions, if this is anything to go by. wow.

Springbok rugby player Francois Hougaard was nowhere to be seen after rumors yesterday that his SMS the cause of the violent strife between Oscar Pistorius, a friend of him, and Reeva Steenkamp.

"Oscar is one of the mentally strongest people I know. He could have up to three times in a session vomiting and would continue to work hard to finish it. "

Regarding the bat. Must read article with side bar.

City Press can reveal that police are investigating different scenarios involving the bat – one of which is that her boyfriend, Olympic hero Oscar Pistorius, used it to viciously assault her.

The police are also investigating two more possibilities: that Steenkamp may have used the bat in self-defence, or that Pistorius used it to break down the toilet door behind which Steenkamp was hiding from him.

We can further reveal that police specifically requested that Pistorius’ blood be tested for drugs and steroids.
Steenkamp’s skull was “crushed” and police tests on the cricket bat and her body will reveal if the injuries were caused by blows to the back of her head.

“There was lots of blood on the bat. Forensic tests will show whose blood it was,” said a source with inside knowledge of the case.

Steroids found at Blade Runner’s mansion

Officers who searched the 26-year-old’s home after lover Reeva was killed in the bathroom are said to have found steroids. Blood samples taken from Pistorius are being tested for the drugs.

A source close to the investigation said: “Steroid drugs were found at Pistorius’s home together with evidence of heavy drinking. That’s why police have specifically ordered that he be tested for steroids.”

OK, Reeva was shot in 4 places: The head, the hand (or finger), the hip and the arm.

There have been comments that she was shot in the hip (or pelvis) and fled to the bathroom. There have also been comments that she was holding her head and sustained the hand and head injury simultaneously. Also that three shots were fired, then a lull or 10 minutes and another three shots.

Any theories here?

Official: Oscar Pistorius' girlfriend shot 4 times through bathroom door

http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/18/world/africa/south-africa-pistorius-case/

Pretoria, South Africa (CNN) -- Model Reeva Steenkamp was shot four times through the bathroom door at the home of Olympian Oscar Pistorius, a South African official familiar with the case told CNN on Monday.

OSCAR Pistorius’s rages forced an Olympics roommate to quit their shared digs at last year’s London Games, a pal of the star revealed yesterday.

Radio host David O’Sullivan said Pistorius had “an unsettling dark side”.

“He said he had been forced to move out as Oscar was constantly screaming in anger at people on the phone.

“The dark side to Oscar was always unsettling. I knew he had a reputation for being arrogant and aloof. I heard he was quick to anger.” The sprinter is said to have a history of violent outbursts.

...

“Oscar knew he couldn’t be ignored and his anger would ensure his demands were met.

“I hadn’t expected him to be a prima donna.”

A French newspaper reports that "the Star" reporter was taken by Mark Batchelor, who has already been quoted in several articles on Oscar's personality, to a restaurant where Oscar had put a bullet in the wall just two weeks ago and made nothing of it!
http://www.leparisien.fr/faits-dive...e-savait-sous-pression-18-02-2013-2577487.php

restaurant goers were told it was just a gas canister exploding
They also say his relation with his ex was very controlling.

Thanks for the link with the exclusive bathroom pics.

Since Reeva's ex-bf and Pistorius used to spar in the boxing ring, I wonder if that is what initiated his rage, when she received his text?

Police arrived at the mansion — which has five reception rooms, a Roman-themed roof pool and three garages — and followed a trail of Reeva’s blood inside.

Police also have CCTV showing Reeva arriving at the house on the Silver Woods estate at 6pm

Handsome Hougaard, 24, was close to Reeva before she paired up with Pistorius in November.

Sources said Pistorius was unhappy they remained friends. Hougaard has insisted the “whole sad ordeal” of Reeva’s death had nothing to do with him.

A woman neighbour whom Pistorius called after the shooting will be a key witness.

Pistorius was yesterday visited in his police cell by brother Carl, sister Aimee and other family members — and urged them to keep Reeva’s relatives in their thoughts.

Carl tweeted: “Praying unceasingly 4 Reeva’s family like my brother asked. Praying 4 my brother.” Last night Reeva’s mum June, 66, sobbed as she asked: “Why would he kill my angel?”

June, speaking publicly about the horror for the first time, added: “She was our golden angel and had so much love to give. I don’t understand. Why would he do it?”

Regarding some of Pistorius' prior history:

Shortly after the accident, Pistorius prohibited press photographers from taking pictures of an accident scene on the N4 highway in which a friend of his was involved.

Beeld reported that Pistorius’ friend knocked over a pedestrian who died on the scene.

Pistorius allegedly tried to keep photographers away from the scene.

Asked why they couldn’t take photos, the Blade Runner was quoted as saying: “Because I am Oscar Pistorius.”

In September 2009 Pistorius spent a night in custody at the Boschkop police office after allegedly assaulting a 19-year-old woman at a house party.

Casseby Taylor-Memory charged Pistorius with assault after he chased her from his Silver Lakes house.

A wooden log weighing 1.5kg allegedly landed on her leg after Pistorius shut a door at his house.

A month later the National Prosecuting Authority declined to prosecute Pistorius because they couldn’t prove he had intended to injure her.

After the incident, Pistorius instituted a lawsuit of R6.5 million against Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa for unlawful arrest and put in a R2.2 million claim of malicious intent against Taylor-Memory.

In November last year, Pistorius’ ex-girlfriend, Samantha Taylor, told City Press he was the ultimate player after he left her for model Reeva Steenkamp, who died in this morning’s shooting incident.

“Oscar is certainly not what people think he is. We dated for a year and a half,” Taylor said.
