Ex-Girlfriend “Shocked” About Annie Le Target
According to a 2003 police report obtained by the Independent earlier this week, she told police he forced her to have sex with him and he “confronted” her, when against his wishes, she sought to end the relationship. However, she declined to press charges. She is not to be confused with the suspect’s fiancee, who lives in Middletown.

Medical Examiner Says Annie Le Was Strangled
Sept. 16, 2009
<snipped>
The deep scratches came to light as the Connecticut medical examiner released Le's cause of death as strangulation, or as it was officially described, "traumatic asphyxia due to neck compression."

Sources also said investigators are finding evidence that the pint-size scientist who weighed only 90 pounds put up a fierce struggle against her attacker.

Blood spatter was found on a laundry cart, and a bead from her necklace was found on the floor of the basement lab where she was killed and stuffed into a wall panel.

Police also found a pair of bloody surgical gloves.

ABC News has also learned that Clark sent a text message to Le early Tuesday, Sept. 8, requesting a meeting to discuss the cleanliness of the the cages of the mice in the research lab.

Officials at New Haven Correctional Center said Clark was taken to the facility after his arraignment. Officials said they were unsure whether Clark would remain there until his next court appearance in two weeks.

After days of investigating, Clark's arrest took six minutes.

Inside the motel, guests said they were largely unaware of the police surveillance or the arrest Wednesday morning. Jeannine Baroutsis, of Pennsylvania, said she was driving with a friend to Maine and just happened to pick the Super 8 as a stopover Wednesday night. She ended up in room 216, the room next door to Clark's.

"Turned on the TV this morning in our preparation to go down to breakfast, they were talking about a Super 8 motel right off Route 91. When Peg walked into the room, my friend, I asked here, 'Is this Cromwell?' and she said, 'Yes it is,' I said, 'Well, we're on TV,' " Baroutsis said.

New Haven Police Chief James Lewis said a warrant for Clark's arrest was signed at about 8 a.m. and that detectives had been working throughout the night. He said that the warrants in the case have been sealed. He said that the documents will eventually amount to thousands of pages because of the number people of interviewed.

Bond was set at $3 million.

Published reports indicate a DNA match between Raymond Clark and Le.

At a news conference New haven Police Chief James Lewis said the warrant was signed and sealed, so no details would be released.

Chief Lewis said they have no other suspects at this time, "but you never know where evidence will take you."

The chief said Clark was going to be brought to New Haven police headquarters for processing, and he should appear in court in the next 24 hours.

The head of the Connecticut FBI, Kim Mertz, specifically thanked the FBI's polygraph unit and behavioral science team for their work in the case, but she refused to comment when asked if Clark failed a lie detector test.

Police Arrest Raymond Clark III In Yale Slaying
New Haven police have postponed their 7 a.m. press conference to 8 a.m.
8:29 a.m. EDT, September 17, 2009
<snipped>
Police took Raymond Clark III into custody this morning at the Super 8 motel here in connection with the death of Yale graduate student Annie Le, whose body was found stuffed into a 2-foot crawl space behind a wall in a Yale laboratory building on Sunday.

Investigators traced Le's and Clark's movements through their computerized swipe cards, said the source, who is familiar with the investigation. Le entered the Yale laboratory at 10 Amistad St. at about 10 a.m. on Sept. 8. She passed through a basement lab area moments later. Then she swiped her way into a separate room of that lab.

Clark entered that same room a short time later, the source said, citing the computer records. Le was never seen again and her card was never used again.

Clark had moved around the laboratory area quite a bit that day, including entering rooms that he normally would not expected to be in, the source said.

Clark also swiped into another area -- the place where Le's body was eventually found after five days, stuffed into a 2-foot crawl space behind a wall.

The pattern of movements captured by the computer records are the reason authorities focused almost immediately on Clark, 24, the source said.

UPDATED: CLARK CHARGED IN ANNIE LE MED ’13 MURDER
Published Thursday, September 17, 2009
<snipped>
New Haven Police Department Chief James Lewis said at a press conference that a warrant was issued for Clark’s arrest shortly after 8 a.m. Clark, 24, who worked at Yale as an animal lab technician, was taken into custody at the Super 8 motel in Cromwell, Conn., where he had been staying since yesterday.

He is being held at the Union Avenue police station on a $3 million bond. He is set to appear in court on Oct. 6. Clark's job at Yale has been suspended and he is barred from campus, University President Richard Levin said in an e-mail message to students and their parents.

He did say that there is no evidence of a romantic relationship between Clark and Le, but he declined to comment on reports that the murder is related to the lab animals that Clark cared for and Le studied. Levin, addressing a news report that Clark sent e-mails to Le before her death, said Wednesday, “To my knowledge there’s nothing that would be relevant to the case” in the correspondence between the two.

Police arrest suspect in Yale slaying
Published: Thursday, September 17, 2009
<snipped>
New Haven Police Chief James Lewis said the case was an issue of "workplace violence." There is no evidence of a romantic relationship between the two, police said.

Police have motive theories, sources have said, but authorities stressed they were nothing more than that. One theory involved Clark being upset over the mishandling of the mice that he cared for. The animals are used in experiments.

According to a source, Clark drew the attention of authorities even before Le’s body was found.

When the FBI questioned him, agents took note of numerous injuries on his body, the source said, including what appeared to be bruises and abrasions on his arms, a mark under his eye, a scratch on his ear, and a bruise or deep scratch on his chest.

When questioned, he said some of the injuries were a scratch from a cat. Others he attributed to playing softball. “He had excuses for everything,” the source said.

It was when officials started taking pictures of his injuries that Clark reportedly appeared to become nervous and asked for an attorney.

Clark a ‘nice guy,’ neighbors say
Published Thursday, September 17, 2009
<snipped>
Cheryl Preneta, who lived on the same street as Clark and took the bus to school with him when the two were children, said she dropped the television remote in her hand when she heard the name of a fellow Branford High School graduate on television Tuesday night. Preneta and other Branford High friends then took to Facebook to discuss the news.

“All of us can’t believe that he was questioned,” she said in a phone interview Tuesday. “But we’re just waiting to see if the evidence points to him or not, and we’re all just hoping it doesn’t.”

Another Branford High graduate, Conor Reardon, who played on the school’s baseball team with Clark, said Clark was generally personable — he always greeted acquaintances on campus — and that he had a good sense of humor. Preneta added that Clark was “good-looking” and had a number of friends.

“There’s nothing bad about him that I could think of at all,” she said.

But Reardon acknowledged that Clark may have seemed distant and aloof to those who did not know him well. That was the opinion of Colleen Murphy, who said she was not very close with Clark and described him as quiet.

“When I would see him walking through the halls, he would look at the ground, wouldn’t really look at anyone,” she said.

Bond is set at $3 million as police allege case of ‘workplace violence’
September 17, 2009

New Haven police said they arrested 24-year-old Raymond Clark III at the the Super 8 hotel in Cromwell, about 25 miles north of the Ivy League campus. Clark had been staying at the hotel since he was released early Wednesday by police, who had served search warrants looking for evidence linking him to Annie Le's death.

New Haven Police Chief James Lewis said there are no other suspects. Authorities would not comment and a possible motive, other than to call it workplace violence. The arrest warrant was sealed by a judge.

"It is important to note that this is not about urban crime, university crime, domestic crime but an issue of workplace violence, which is becoming a growing concern around the country," Lewis said.

I Was with Raymond Clark After Yale Slay
Med Student Worked "About 5 Feet" From Him; Says He Seemed Normal; At Time, Cops Say, Annie Le's Body Was Stashed Behind Wall
Sept. 17, 2009
<snipped>
Even after Yale graduate student Annie Le disappeared last week, the laboratory where she was last seen remained open, and people were working even while her body was, police say, secreted behind a basement wall in the building.

CBS News Correspondent Randall Pinkston spoke to a medical student who, like Le, worked alongside Clark. She requested that CBS News obscure her face and voice.

Friday night, three days after Le vanished, and before her body was found, the woman says she was in the basement, about five feet from him for roughly three minutes.

"He appeared very relaxed, very normal," the woman told Pinkston. "I didn't sense any anything different in his behavior from what I'd observed previously."

Only essential personnel could access the basement lab, by swiping key cards at multiple access points, Pinkston points out. The area was highly secured. And researchers typically worked alone.

"It is important to note that this is not about urban crime, university crime, domestic crime but an issue of workplace violence, which is becoming a growing concern around the country," Lewis said.

Lewis said "there were no issues with the arrest."

Clark's attorney, David Dworski, did not immediately return calls seeking comment on Thursday. He has previously said Clark is "committed to proceeding appropriately" with police.

The Hartford Courant reports that swipe cards show Clark and Le were in the same room shortly after 10 a.m. on Sept. 8. Le wasn't seen alive after that, and her card wasn't used again. But Clark swiped into the area where her body was discovered five days later.

Yale President Releases Statement On Arrest
Sept. 17, 2009
*Note: Statement Is Snipped!
<snipped>
To the Yale Community:

The New Haven Chief of Police has just announced that Raymond Clark has been arrested in connection with the death of Annie Le. We are relieved and encouraged by this progress in the investigation, but, of course, we must resist the temptation to rush to judgment until a full and fair prosecution of this case brings a just resolution. As with every development in this tragic story, we think first of Annie's family, her fiancé and his family, and her friends, and our hearts go out to them.

Mr. Clark has been a lab technician at Yale since December 2004. His supervisor reports that nothing in the history of his employment at the University gave an indication that his involvement in such a crime might be possible.

We are a close community with deeply shared values. Monday night's candlelight vigil gave moving testimony to the caring and compassion of this place. Let us continue to offer comfort and consolation to Annie's family and friends, and let us honor her memory by rededicating ourselves to the search for truth to which she herself was so deeply devoted.

Richard C. Levin President

Police Arrest Raymond Clark III In Annie Le Slaying; Bail Kept At $3M
11:04 a.m. EDT, September 17, 2009
<snipped>
Andrew Grocki, 49, of Newington, was in the lobby of the motel to meet someone on business when he saw the team of law enforcement officers come in the rear door of the motel and go up the back stairs. An officer prevented anyone from going up the stairs, Grocki said. About 10 minutes later, they brought Clark down in handcuffs. He was wearing a striped white golf shirt.

Clark looked "just somber. Head down," Grocki said.

Four officers surrounded Clark and escorted him out a back door and into an unmarked vehicle with tinted windows.

He was arraigned in Superior Court in New Haven shortly after 10:30 a.m. Clark was brought in to the courtroom wearing leg shackles. He looked pale, and when Judge Jon C. Blue asked if he had been read his rights, Clark said "Yes, sir."

The bail commissioner told the judge that Clark does not have any prior criminal history, and based on that, he recommended Clark's bail be dropped to $1 million. Beth Merkin, Clark's public defender, asked the judge to adopt the bail commissioner's recommendation. She said Clark refused to answer the bail commissioner's questions about his prior criminal history under the advice of his attorney.

But Blue kept Clark's bail at $3 million, citing the serious nature of the case.

Blue then transferred the case to the Part A courtroom in New Haven, where more serious cases are heard. The case was continued to Oct. 6.

Relatives of the man who lost his fiancee to a killer at Yale University say they will observe this month's Jewish holidays in private as they grieve for her.

The family of Jonathan Widawsky said Thursday that they will not attend services for the "foreseeable future" at their temple on New York's Long Island.

They said they want to "facilitate the safety, security and sensitivity" of services at Temple Beth El.

The family also thanks people who were involved in preparations for "a wedding that was not to be."
