After he's charged with murder of Annie Le, Yale lab tech Raymond Clark put in solitary confinement

Raymond Clark 3rd is being held in the private unit at the New Haven Community Correctional Center for his own protection.

In his first few hours behind bars, the 24-year-old Clark has looked shell-shocked, Bernard said.

"He's just somber," Bernard added. "It's his first time in jail. This is all new to him. He hasn't cried. He hasn't said a word to anyone."

"We did a strip search of him and checked his mental state. He's in good mental state."

A clean-shaven Clark glanced nervously at his lawyer and the judge throughout his three-minute arraignment. He did not enter a plea.

Lewis said Le, 24, was not sexually assaulted. He called her strangulation death a case of "workplace violence" but would not say what triggered the attack.

Could tale of slain Yale student Annie Le and 'person of interest' Ray Clark be about mice?
Updated Wednesday, September 16th 2009, 12:07 PM
<snipped>
In the e-mails, Clark is said to criticize Le for not adhering to the protocols for tending the mice kept in the basement as part of her lab's ongoing experiments.

Le is said to have responded in a conciliatory tone, promising to keep to the protocols. Investigators wonder if Clark was not satisfied, if resentment suddenly flared to rage, if as crazy as it may seem this was a case of mice and murder.

Investigators also noted swipe card records that are said to show Clark usually went through the building in an orderly fashion in accordance with the demands of his work.

But the swipe card records from the day Le disappeared show Clark moving from room to room with no apparent logic, at points going to places unrelated to his job.

Such a pattern might fit somebody who was frenetically searching for a place to hide a body.

Despite Surveillance, Quiet Night At Motel
People Staying At Super 8 Say It Was Quiet

After arriving at the Super 8 Motel in Cromwell, it only took approximately six minutes for FBI agents, a team of Connecticut state troopers and New Haven detectives to have Raymond Clark in custody, accusing him in the murder of Yale graduate student Annie Le.

Jeannie Baroutsis of Pennsylvania stayed at the motel Wednesday night with her friend, halfway through their trip to Maine.

Baroutsis said, “They were talking about a Super 8 Motel right off Route 91 and when Peg walked into the room, my friend, I asked her, 'Is this Cromwell?' and she said, 'Yes it is.' I said, 'Well, we’re on T.V.'”

Thursday morning, police escorted Clark down a back staircase and a back door to a caravan of police cars waiting for him.

“We did call down to see if we could come down to breakfast and they said absolutely fine, and came down and eventually we saw all the police cars going by and that’s when we realized he had left the building.”

Yale suspect's work attitude examined

The official said Thursday that investigators don't know why Raymond Clark III might have killed 24-year-old Annie Le, because he won't talk to police. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing and many details remain sealed.

People interviewed by police have painted Clark as a controlling man who viewed the laboratory as his territory.

Authorities are investigating whether that led to the killing, but the official says that's just a theory.

But students say their faith in this Ivy League institution has been shaken, if not shattered.

"This was something really close, I mean, it happened in a Yale building and that always seemed like a really safe place to be but it's kind of violated," said Yale Junior Mansur Tokmouline.

Violated in the most awful way, Le was strangled and her body then was stuck in the wall in the building at 10 Amistad Street. This all allegedly happened at the hands of Clark. For over a week, there's been intense speculation and fear.

"I think we were definitely really concerned about safety for awhile," Tokmouline said.

Over at Yale, the President of the Clerical and Technical Workers Union said the issue isn't about where it happened but who it happened to.

"It is not just a question of security at Yale, or safety in New Haven, it is also a question of the violence against women that is pervasive in our world," said Laura Smith.

That is certainly the case with domestic situations. But, it is actually very rare with workplace violence.

Students Still 'Shaken Up' Over Yale Murder

The last few days have been disturbing ones on the Yale campus. Now that police have someone in custody for the murder of graduate student Annie Le, it seems to have brought a sense of closure to the Yale community.

While police have not released a motive, they suspect it was workplace violence. Laura Smith is the Union President of Yale’s Clerical and Technical Workers. Smith said, “This is more than about safety and security, it’s about violence against women.”

Yale says it does background checks on lab technicians like Raymond Clark, but he did not have a criminal record. The lab building where Le worked was a secure building, and only people with ID cards can enter the building.

Double take: Warrants in Le case are sealed

Although Raymond Clark III was served four warrants Tuesday night and Wednesday morning in the investigation into the murder of Annie Le MED ’13, the public has yet to see any of them.

Dershowitz also questioned how Clark could have been handcuffed on a mere search warrant. Compelling someone to go from their home to a police station in handcuffs is an arrest, he said, which requires an arrest warrant.

“The distinction between being in custody and being under arrest is thinner than an onion skin,” he said.

Workplace Homicides Not Common, But Happen
Approximately 17 Homicides A Week In United States Are Work Related

Quinnipiac psychology professor Carrie Bulger said, “There are about 17 homicides per week in the United States at work and only 8 percent of them are worker on worker.”

Bulger also said that workplace homicides are not common, but they do happen.

In July, Eridiania Rodriquez, a cleaning lady at the World Trade Center, disappeared in the middle of her shift. Her body was discovered four days later stuffed in an air conditioning vent and her co-worker Joseph Pabon was arrested and charged in her murder.

Perry said, "I can't say that I believe he's guilty. I just can't picture him doing something like this."

Heslin says Clark is his best friend. Perry says he's known Clark since first grade.

Co-worker: Raymond Clark III 'a nice man, always'

One researcher said he often went by the lab in the Yale School of Medicine building where Le was found strangled and stuffed in a wall. Lufeng Zhang worked with Clark, he said, and thinks the police may have the wrong man.

High school friend Lisa Heselin remembers Clark "as a jokester, kind of a class clown," she said. "Everybody knew him. Everybody liked him."

She and others who knew Clark in high school are shocked that he was arrested in connection with Le's murder, she said.

They can't believe it, and then, of course, you're reminiscing, like, 'Oh my God, remember when we went over to his house and we all hung out?' You don't expect somebody you grew up with to be involved in something like this," Heselin said.

What does 'person of interest' mean? Nothing
updated 1:27 p.m. EDT, Thu September 17, 2009

"The 'person of interest' tells you nothing," says Cynthia Hujar Orr, president of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. "They are suspicious of that person, but the police don't have the evidence they need."

But not everyone who is called a person of interest becomes a suspect. In the last decade, law enforcement authorities have increasingly used the phrase -- but the label didn't necessarily mean the person would be charged. According to one analysis of 40 cases, half of the "persons of interest" were released without charges.

Clark's Behavior In Lab Raised Suspicions

As hordes of FBI agents and Yale police combed the basement of a Yale University laboratory building for missing bride-to-be Annie Le, the man accused of killing her moved among them, in an apparent effort to cover his tracks, a law enforcement official familiar with the investigation said.

One investigator, among a group of investigators who were in the lab interviewing employees and students shortly after Le disappeared, witnessed Clark trying to hide lab cleaning equipment that they discovered contained blood spatters. Clark was observed cleaning up areas that Le was in before she was reported missing, the law enforcement official said.

Police believe that Clark tried to clean up the crime scene after disposing of Le's body, sources said. The computer record of his movements between laboratories using his swipe card show he left the building several times and also moved between several rooms, including some that he had no reason to be in, a source said.

Annie Le's Brother: "No Clue" If Problems Between Sister and Suspect

SACRAMENTO, CA - The brother of Yale student Annie Le says he had no idea if there were any issues between his sister and suspect Raymond Clark III, who was charged with her murder on Thursday.

"No clue. It came out of the blue," said Chris Le.

Le, who said the last time he saw his sister was at her engagement party in Santa Ana last month, said he didn't want to comment on the police investigation but thought they handled it well.

"I look forward to finding out more specifics of this case. I'm not trying to speculate," Le said.

Thursday, the family of Jonathan Widawsky, Le's fiance who she was to marry on Sept. 13, issued the following statement:

We want to express our gratitude to all our friends and relatives, our temple family and our neighbors, our colleagues and schoolmates, and all the good people out there who have offered their good wishes, sympathy and support during a difficult time. We share in the grief of the family of Annie Le and are, collectively, doing our best to deal with our tragic loss.

We want to thank the various law enforcement agencies and the administration and chaplaincy of Yale University for their massive effort, as they continue to help get us through this. Our lives have been a whirlwind from the moment we first knew that Annie missing, working and meeting and praying with them.

We want to thank all those who have been involved in our preparations for a wedding that was not to be for their quiet understanding.

If you would like to make donations in memory of Annie, we are asking that you consider the I Have a Dream Foundation, the institution that Annie and Jonathan chose and suggested on their wedding registry. Alternatively, your own church or synagogue, temple or mosque.

In order to facilitate the safety, security and sensitivity of High Holiday services at our temple, we want you to know that we will not be attending any religious services for the foreseeable future. We hope that you will respect the privacy of our congregation at Temple Beth El, as they too are doing everything they can to help us get through this. It is a difficult time, and we ask that you allow our fellow congregants, in this the holiest of seasons, to pray in peace. And we ask that you pray for the soul of Annie Le, and for healing, for her family, for Jonathan and for our family.

We will be communicating more fully as time goes by, but for the moment, we would appreciate it if you would respect our privacy and the privacy of Annie's family.

Annie will live in our hearts forever.
