Gary Leiterman was convicted in 2005 for the 1969 murder of Jane Mixer.

Although there might be some controversy regarding Gary Leiterman's conviction for the murder of Jane Mixer, her case was always associated with the Michigan "Co-Ed Murders".

Leiterman was only convicted of one murder - that of Jane Mixer, based on DNA evidence. IF he killed Jane, could he have killed others too? If he didn't kill Jane, who did?

Richard, everyone knows that Collins has always denied it and wouldn't enter a plea. Everyone knows serial killers admit what they do after being caught. These are more of the umpteen examples of the absurdity of your argument.

What do these serial killers have in common? They were all caught, yet they never confessed to their crimes.

On June 17th, Collins will turn 75 years old.

That's like 100 in prison years, imo.

After so long, what does he have to lose with coming clean? It's not like he's ever going to get out of prison. But then again, these guys like to keep their secrets so they can maintain their self-perceived superiority.

He gets a sense of "control" over the fact that detectives will never be able to 100% confirm that he did it, even though it's an "everyone knows who did it" case.

Just as Collins felt compelled to kill, he feels compelled to lie. Nothing he says can be believed without significant verification.

It would be great if he were to own up to his crimes and answer questions about them truthfully, but that has not happened in the past 53 years. Such reasons as remorse, sympathy, justice, and redemption are totally unknown to him and to others like him.

When confronted (in 2013) with DNA evidence linking him to victims Karen Sue Beineman and Alice Kalom, Collins changed his long standing denials of ever even knowing them to a complicated BS story of how his DNA "innocently" came to be on and in their bodies, but how it was his room mate Arnold Davis who was the "real killer".

55 years ago, on 9 July 1967, Mary Fleszar, age 19, was abducted, murdered. And dumped in a rural area near Ypsilanti, Michigan.

Her brutal murder was considered the first in a series known as "The Coed Murders".

Looking at the dates of murders believed to have been committed by Collins, there seem to be some long gaps.

His first believed/attributed murder was that of Mary Fleszar on 9 July 1967. The next was almost a whole year later - that of Joan Schell on 30 June 1968. The next one occurred 9 months later - Maralynn Skelton on 24 March 1969. After that, it seems that he killed at least one per month.

Were there other victims between July 1967 and March 1969?

I think he was busy committing other crimes during that time frame, and it likely just hasn't been pursued, if those crimes were even reported. I'm thinking things like date rape, peeping, unwanted contact. Much different approach by LE then to many of those types of crimes. We know he was a prolific thief during that time period.

Jacqueline Dunleavy, age 16
Murdered 9 January 1968

Here is a Cold Case which might be related to at least some of the "Coed" cases:

I don't know if John Norman Collins was ever considered by Canadian authorities as a potential suspect in any murders committed in their country, but Collins was Canadian by birth and at one time tried to get transferred from a Michigan prison to one in Canada. He was born in Windsor, Ontario (just across the river from Detroit, Michigan) and he had relatives there. London, Ontario is very close to Windsor.

There were a number of unsolved murders and missing person cases of young persons at around the same timeframe as the Michigan/Coed murders. While it is likely that most of them are not related to the Michigan cases, there are a few which do stand out. The murder of Jacqueline Dunleavy seems to have a number of similarities.

Here are a few matching forensic factors:

- Jacqueline was a 16 year old, white female, nicely dressed and outdoors alone.
-- This fits the description of all the Michigan (and California) "Coed" victims, whose ages ranged from 13 to 23.

- Jacqueline was last seen at a bus stop some time between 6:35 and 7 PM. One witness thought he saw her entering a white 4 door sedan - possibly a Chrysler.
-- This is very similar to how almost all of the Coed victims were given a ride which led to their deaths, in particular in the case of Joan Schell picked up at a bus stop on 30 June 1968 by John Norman Collins and two other males.
-- Many of the Coed cases began with an abduction in the later afternoon or early evening hours.

- Although Jacqueline had suffered a head injury, the cause of death was strangulation.
-- The Coed cases involved murder by shooting, stabbing, strangulation, and blunt force trauma to the head. John Norman Collins murdered Karen Sue Beineman by both blunt force head trauma and strangulation.

- She was on her back in the snow, with her arms straight down along her sides and her legs closed and placed perfectly straight, "as though positioned in a casket for burial.”
-- The Michigan Coed victims were all moved from where they were picked up and from where they had been killed. Some were posed in various ways.

- Jacqueline had not been sexually penetrated, but semen was found on her winter coat that had been left strewn by her remains, and Jacqueline’s skirt had been pulled up and her blouse torn open.
-- Most Michigan Coed victims were disrobed to an extent. Their clothing was often cut away, but found in the vicinity of the bodies. The Michigan Coed cases had sexual elements but not all involved normal sexual acts.

- Jacqueline's body was left out in the open in a relatively busy area where she could readily be found.
-- This was how all of the Coed victims were left - generally in rural areas, but near well traveled roads in places where they were easily found. None were covered with dirt, leaves, or debris.

- Autopsy revealed a small pack of pink facial tissue was found lodged in the back of Jacqueline’s throat.
-- Most of the Michigan Coed Victims had cloth stuffed back in their throats, usually pieces cut from their own clothing.

- Something NOT stated in Jacqueline's case was whether any jewelry or possessions were missing.
-- Most of the Coed cases involved the taking of souvenirs such as shoes, earrings, necklaces, etc.

Jacqueline's murder occurred on 9 January 1968, midway between the murders of Mary Fleszar (9 July 1967) and Joan Schell (30 June 1968). All three cases involved the perpetrator using a large American made sedan.

Here is an unsolved murder which occurred in New Jersey on 30 May 1969. Investigators thought at the time that they might have been connected to the Michigan Coed Murders in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Susan Davis and Elizabeth Perry

On Friday, May 30, 1969, Susan Davis and Elizabeth Perry, both 19, were stabbed to death by an unknown assailant near Somers Point, New Jersey. The young women had been staying in Ocean City on vacation since the Tuesday before. At 4:30 a.m. they were headed back to Pennsylvania in hopes of beating the traffic, but stopped to have breakfast at Somers Point Diner. After leaving the diner about an hour later, the sequence of events leading to their deaths is uncertain.

A state trooper found their powder-blue 1966 Chevrolet convertible abandoned by the Parkway around noon that day, and had it removed.

Three days later at about 1:30 p.m., the bodies of the two young women were found hidden under piles of leaves in dense woods, 200 yards from the Garden State Parkway and about 150 yards from the abandoned car. Davis was nude, and her clothes were found in a pile near her, including her jacket and purse. Perry was clothed except for her underwear, which was missing. Contemporaneous news reports vary on whether the victims were sexually assaulted. Some state that Perry had not been raped, while no determination could be made for Davis. Other reports indicated that both bodies were too decomposed to make a determination, and still others said there was “some evidence of sexual assault” but did not elaborate on what that was. Later news articles stated that neither woman had been raped.

The coroner did find they had eaten breakfast about an hour before they were murdered, and gave the time of death to be approximately 6 a.m. One of the victims had been tied to a tree with her hair—an “unusual method of restraint.”

Both had been stabbed to death with a small knife, possibly a penknife or pocketknife, though the murder weapon was never found. Perry died of a penetrating stab wound to her right lung; she also had three stab wounds in her abdomen and side of her neck. Davis died of a wound in her neck that cut her larynx; she also had four wounds on the left side of her abdomen and a non-fatal wound on right side of her neck. Due to the neck wounds, an investigator said he theorized the killer was at some point in the backseat of the convertible, jabbing at Davis as she drove in order to force her to pull over.

Police found a men’s diver-style watch without a wristband near the scene, believed to belong to the murderer. The car keys were found ten days later, tossed to the side of the road a short distance away from the bodies. Robbery was an unlikely motive as the victims’ purses still had money in them and their suitcases were not disturbed...

... Three young men, sleeping in their car which had run out of gas along the Parkway, saw the girls’ convertible about 200 feet away around 7:15 a.m. when they awakened that morning. They hadn’t witnessed it park. Cleared as suspects, the teens did not report hearing any screams.

Two witnesses came forward to state they had seen a “lanky, slender teenager with curly brown hair,” a “narrow face,” and “sunken cheek bones” in a white T-shirt lingering near the abandoned car the morning of May 30 at about 8 a.m. However, the police cautioned: “we are not sure if this is the murderer. He was simply seen near the car.” Later in the summer a composite sketch of this suspect was released. An investigation into whether the murders were linked to similar murders targeting young women in Ann Arbor, Michigan committed by a similar-looking suspect produced no further leads and the cases were eventually determined to be unrelated...

But could they be related? Note that there was a 48 day gap between the murders of Dawn Basom (15 April 1969) and Alice Kalom (7 June 1969). In late June and into July 1969, Collins was in California with Andrew Manuel, where it is strongly believed he murdered Roxie Ann Phillips on or about 1 July.

In regard to the Susan Davis and Elizabeth Perry murders, note that they were stabbed numerous times with a short bladed knife. Their murders occurred midway between the Michigan murders of Mary Fleszar and Joan Schell who were also stabbed numerous times with a short bladed knife (estimated blade size four inches in length and one inch in width).

John Norman Collins owned such a knife which he asked his room mate Arnold Davis to hide for him prior to a police search of his room in July 1969. He had carefully cleaned off any blood and fingerprints before giving it to Davis.

Davis claimed that he did not touch it, but allowed Collins to put it in his (Davis') dresser drawer. Police investigators obtained it during the search of Collins' apartment, when Davis (who was present) told them about it.

Collins was only tried for the murder of Karen Sue Beineman. Because it was never established that Karen was stabbed with a knife (she was strangled and bludgeoned with a blunt object), the knife was not entered into evidence at trial and Arnold Davis, who testified against Collins during the trial, was not allowed to mention it to the jury.

DNA evidence was unknown at the time (1969), although blood type evidence was known and often entered into evidence. Even though Collins' knife had been cleaned, it might still be possible to obtain DNA evidence from the inside of its SHEATH.

Murdered prior to 3 August 1969 near Lompoc, California

Could this unidentified young woman's death be related to other murders mentioned in this thread? She was stabbed numerous times and her body left in an isolated rural area. There are many similarities.

John Norman Collins and Andrew Manuel had been in California in July 1969, where Roxie Ann Phillips was brutally murdered. They returned to Michigan by the end of the month. When Collins was arrested, Manuel immediately fled Michigan for California and from there traveled to Phoenix, Arizona where he was captured in August 1969 and returned to Michigan.

 Joan Elspeth Schell
Joan Elspeth Schell, age 20 and earlier photos.
Born 1 December 1947
Murdered 30 June 1968

On June 30th, 1968, twenty-year-old Joan Schell was traveling to Ann Arbor to visit her boyfriend but missed the bus. She decided to hitchhike. Her roommate said a vehicle stopped to pick her up and the driver was a young male, around twenty years old, with clean cut and short dark hair. He matched the description of Joan’s neighbor, John Norman Collins. Her body was bound on July 5th, 1968. She had been mutilated and placed on a roadside in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The body was identified as Joan Schell. Her autopsy showed she had been raped and stabbed at least twenty-five times with a knife. The wounds punctured her lungs, liver, and carotid artery. Her throat had also been slit. The lack of blood underneath her body led investigators to believe that her body hadn’t been along the roadside long and was placed there after she was killed. While part of her body was preserved, her upper torso and head were badly decomposed, leading investigators to believe her killer tried to preserve her body. The wounds were very similar to those that Mary Fleszar had suffered, leading authorities to believe the murders were committed by the same man.

Joan Elspeth Schell was born on December 1st, 1947, in New Paris, Wisconsin. Her family later moved to Plymouth, Michigan. She was an art student at Eastern Michigan University. Her roommate begged her not to accept the ride that night, and when she failed to check in a few hours later, her roommate reported her missing. Her roommate’s instincts were spot on.

Police were told that the man seen picking Joan up looked very similar to her neighbor John Norman Collins. He was matched the sketch of the man who asked to take pictures of Mary Flaszer at the funeral home. Police questioned him, and he denied knowing Joan. He said he spent the weekend Joan disappeared with his mother in Center Line, Michigan. Police believed the young man and didn’t verify his alibi...

Roxie Ann Phillips, age 17, was visiting California from Oregon when she was murdered on 30 June 1969.
Photo from her 1967 Rex Putnam High School yearbook.

Roxie was very likely a victim of John Norman Collins and/or his partner Andrew Manuel while they were on a road trip in June and July 1969 to California. Collins was indited for her murder and his extradition from Michigan to California for trial was requested. However, Governor Milliken of Michigan wanted all charges, convictions, and appeals in Michigan to be completed first. When Michigan appeals were exhausted, the extradition request was approved, but California then declined to pursue the case, and Collins remained in Michigan where he has been incarcerated for the past 54 years.

At the time of Roxie's death, California investigators believed that her murder was connected to a similar June 1969 murder - that of Susan Mary Hennessy, age 17.

The nude body of Virginia Lynn Smith, 13, was found June 23, 1969 in a creek bed in a deserted canyon near her home in Claremont, California. She had been raped and strangled. Her death was believed by investigators to be connected to the murders of Roxie, Susan, and another then unidentified woman.

Roxie's murder, along with three others which occurred in California during the June/July 1969 time frame, suggests that Collins also killed outside of Michigan - and that Andrew Manuel (aka Richard Diaz) may have been a willing partner in his murders.
