MO MO - Kenny Loudermilk, Paraglider Failed To Show Up at Checkpoint in Hermann, 26 Oct 2024

From the article above:
"now missing over the Missouri River."

Oh my. Frightening.
Seems like he has been paragliding before, but I could have misinterpreted the article

Thoughts and prayers for him and those who love him. Hoping a good search is being done.

WASHINGTON, Mo. — When Kenny Lee Loudermilk crashed a vehicle five or six years ago, family said he was at least tempted to spend the insurance money on a new prop and motor that straps on your back.

Paragliding was his newest hobby, and he was all in. The Missouri River was one of his favorite routes, especially with fall colors.
“He’s gone over the water a lot,” said daughter Kylie, 15.

She was part of a group of more than a dozen family and friends gathered here Saturday near a boat ramp, hoping Loudermilk’s body would be found soon. He’s presumed dead since crashing into the river Wednesday evening.

Family said Kenny Lee Loudermilk, 35, who has been missing since Wednesday, crashed his paraglider into the Missouri River near Washington, Mo.

Apparently experienced:

They said Loudermilk had many hours of flying time in Missouri and other parts of the country, and he had known people who had fatal accidents.

with witnesses who noticed him entering the river:

Rain this week in the area, no idea how fast the river flows? The article mentions 6 miles per hour?

Peace & comfort to friends & family!

  • was traveling from Defiance, Missouri, to Herman with another paraglider when the two got separated somewhere near Washington, Missouri.
  • Several crews took part in the search for Loudermilk, but none have found any sign of him or the wreckage.

The article states he landed, went underwater and never resurfaced. I would think the motor is heavy and he should sink and not go too far downriver. The facebook page says numerous people have contacted Adventures with Purpose. Hopefully they can help find him if he is not too far down river. RIP Mr. Loudermilk. Prayers for his family and friends.

Family members of a paraglider from O’Fallon, Missouri who crashed into the Missouri River are asking for volunteers to help in searching for him. [Snip]...asking anyone with equipment like boats, sonars, drones and even helicopters to help in the search. The family wants to search from the Chain of Rocks Bridge area at Choteau Island to the north where the Mississippi River meets the Missouri River. Then they want to search up the Missouri River to Washington.

WASHINGTON, Mo. – The family of Kenny Loudermilk is asking for prayers and the public to not give up hope.

The 35-year-old paragliding pilot was last seen on Oct. 26. Witnesses said he crashed in the Missouri River near Washington, just east of Highway 47.

“We want to make sure we bring an awareness to keep an alert out for him and to keep an eye out to see anything that doesn’t look like it should be there,” said Kevin Baker, Loudermilk’s brother-in-law. “Let the authorities know.”

Family members have shared updates on social media. A has also been created to help with the search and provide support for Loudermilk’s 15-year-old daughter, Kylie. Her mother died when she was three.

Kylie calls her dad “awesome” and “adventurous.”

“He always had something planned, you know, loved to surprise me,” she said.

The family is not giving up hope, and they said they believe in the power of prayer. They are inviting the public to join them for a vigil at James Rennick Park in Washington on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

Loudermilk’s family members said it is not clear what went wrong. They said Loudermilk was power paragliding to take in the view of the fall colors. Multiple searches have yet to give answers.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better dad,” Kylie said.

She is currently in the care of her grandparents.

A powered paraglider motor is (on average) 50 pounds. Generally, in a crash, the motor is likely to become detached from the rest of the structure, so the pilot may not be found where the motor is found, if the crash was not survivable.Although flying a paraglider doesn't require a license, the community can be tight-knit. I know a lot of people will be looking for him.

Baker said Loudermilk was always safe and prepared when paragliding, so he believes there was some sort of equipment failure prior to taking flight, causing Loudermilk to end up in the river.

MSHP says there is no timeline for when the search may stop, but they may begin scaling back their hours each day.

...sonar detected objects on Monday in an area where search dogs also reacted. The searchers will be back in those areas on Tuesday. [snip] “What we’re asking for is, if there is anybody else out there with some technology that maybe we’re not thinking about or maybe that could help with the search in a river-type environment,”

Day 23 Weekly update! Officers with Missouri Water Patrol Troop C have been in contact with their network for additional support searching the river from the sky and by boat. This week local sheriff’s called in advanced dog teams to inspect key areas of possibility. This effort brought further inspection that we will begin dragging and diving as weather permits.

We want to send a special thank you to Chaos Divers (Jacob and Lindsey) and Rivers In Seine (Darrow) for their dedication to the family and search to bring Kenny home. These hero’s spend multiple freezing cold days on the river dedicated to the search.

Please continue your positivity... your prayers... good vibes! We believe in the power of prayer & will continue to live in hope! #BringHomeKennyLee

Since his disappearance, multiple crews have participated in the search and rescue efforts, including Jacob Grubbs, who is the founder of Chaos Divers.

“(The Missouri River) is a super difficult river to search. There is a lot of debris in the water. There is very little visibility under the water’s surface, so we are methodically going through the water to find anything that could be a sign of Kenny’s location,” said Grubbs, who along with fellow divers Lindsay and Eric Bussick, have traveled from Illinois to assist in the search efforts. In the past year, the trio have located 13 people who went missing and were found underwater in various ponds, lakes, streams or rivers. “This is a different kind of search, because most of those people were found inside of a vehicle or near a vehicle. This time, we are looking for a man and a paraglider in a river that is full of debris, of trees, of root systems,” Grubbs said. He said his company has searched the river’s waters from Washington’s shoreline to Klondike Park in St. Charles County.

The report of a body being spotted in the river's channel sparked great interest in Franklin County and elsewhere in the region as some expressed hope on social media that it could be the body of Kenny Lee Loudermilk or Aaron Duenke. [Snip] ...multiple search teams have combed the area of the river where the barge worker spotted the body but to no avail.
