@Niner the bond review was Waived as stated above.

They describe Karvell as a boy who loved going to the park and playing in the snow. They wrote that Karvell loved school and watching TV with his two siblings. His favorite food was the original Popeyes Chicken sandwich and fries.

Prosecutors charged Karvel’s mother, 35-year-old Tasha Haefs, with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in his death.

Police identify 6-year-old boy killed in Kansas City home

@Niner Karvel was the little boys name. I won't put his last name here it is in the article, don't believe it belongs in the thread. jmo
There's a picture of him on the page linked in the story. He was a cute little kid.

RIP, Karvel. You and your doggie are playing together in heaven, although you should be playing together here on earth.

@Niner

I'm confused.... so grandma (who lives 4 hours north in Sioux City, Iowa) felt things were fine just prior despite previously having to take trips down there occasionally in the past when her daughter was having difficulty describing what was happening with her thoughts. They also describe her as spending YEARS working through drug addiction, depression, and severe trauma. She believes her daughter was recently experiencing hallucinations and breaks with reality. Moms boyfriend (father of oldest two children) is curreny living in halfway house 4 hours away in Sioux City and described to grandma things he was trying to help mom through too?

How many more red flags were needed here? How many other adults besides Grandma and Boyfriend needed to know what was going on before something was reported and/or actually done about it?

This doesn't seem to be a situation of a mom suddenly snapping after never having snapped before. Seems pretty clear that mom had a history of some pretty severe mental and emotional problems/breakdowns that either weren't taken seriously enough or that weren't treated for long term & properly.
This was preventable. The writing was on the wall.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A mother accused of killing her 6-year-old son in a particularly violent manner will not stand trial anytime soon.

Tasha Haefs, 35, is charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the death of her son, Karvell Stevens.

Police found the little boy’s badly mutilated body inside a home near East 73rd Street and Indiana Avenue back in February.

After reviewing a mental health report ordered by the court, Judge Sarah Castle ruled on Friday that Haefs lacks the capacity to understand the criminal charges against her and cannot assist in her own defense.

The judge ruled that Haefs is incompetent to stand trial at this time. The Missouri Department of Mental Health will be charged with administering medication that may help Haefs understand the killing she’s accused of committing.

A hearing with the Department of Mental Health on Haefs’ case is scheduled to take place on June 9.
