Cops increasingly 'concerned' about missing Jersey City mom; husband arrested on unrelated warrant
Published: Wednesday, August 24, 2011, 5:16 PM

When Acuna refused to speak to police without a lawyer, detectives took a look into his background and found an outstanding warrant for his arrest out of Union City Municipal Court for failing to appear, Comey said.

When the warrant was discovered, Jersey City police tracked Acuna down to a location in Hoboken on Aug. 18 and he was arrested, Comey said. The chief said he does not know the nature of the summons that had required Acuna to appear. Officials said he quickly posted bail and was released.

The New Jersey State Police have joined the search for Lehrer which has included interviews from California to Canada, Comey said. The chief said police are following tips and they seek the public's help, adding that "We have a very broad puzzle and we are trying to narrow it from the general to the specific."

Lehrer is originally from Canada and several of her family members from there have come to New Jersey in the wake of her disappearance.

“They are very concerned about her safety,” Comey said. “We have given them an education on what we have done so far.”

Some 75 friends of Randy "Amanda" Lehrer, a missing Jersey City Heights woman, comprised an emotional and teary-eyed search party last night as they distributed missing person fliers along Central Avenue.

Jersey City Police Detective Cesar Camacho, who is leading the investigation into Lehrer’s disappearance, helped to copy and distribute fliers last night.
“In all my years, this is, by far, the best I’ve seen a reaction from the community,” he told the group that assembled in front of the North District precinct, 282 Central Ave.

Jersey City investigator Charles Hannon has put up a $3,000 reward for information leading to finding Lehrer. “I hope she’s still alive and someone knows where she’s at,” he said last night as he distributed his own fliers.

The owner, Tommy Diakos, says she was always an excellent employee and when she didn't show up for work on Monday morning, he called her and left several messages. He says the next day he got a call back from her husband, saying that she'd gone to Canada, to visit family.

But police say she had not in fact contacted her family since she was last seen, and they are working with New Jersey State Police to find her.

New mom Randy "Amanda" Lehrer, 32, has been missing since Aug. 13, and friends are concerned that the recent hurricane swept away many of her "missing" posters. They plan to distribute new ones and also have set up a Facebook page here.

As of press time Thursday, police still had not found Jersey City mom Randy “Amanda” Lehrer, 32, who has been missing for almost a month.

Two weeks ago, concerned volunteers posted over 600 flyers throughout Jersey City Heights, hoping someone would provide information to solve the mystery of her sudden disappearance.
----
Police say Acuna, the husband, has not been cooperating, complicating the search effort. According to police, when Acuna refused to speak to police without a lawyer, a background check revealed an outstanding arrest warrant from Union City. He was arrested and posted bail, police said.

The 10-month-old child is being cared for by her father, police said.

How sad. It sounds like he had a few days to cover up whatever he did with her. I hope some how they can get this baby out of his care.

This is very sad and scary. I hope that they checked any surveillance tapes in the area. I wish that he had stayed in jail longer. I agree with AuburnPoet. I hate it that these creeps can walk around free and are not forced to police interrogation. I really wish that there were more options for police to question these 's!

Members of the Jersey City police and fire department, along with Emergency Service Unit vehicles and hazardous materials units have converged at a Jersey City home this afternoon in connection to a woman missing since Aug.17.

"There is a significant development in the case of (Randy 'Amanda' Lehrer)" Police Chief Tom Comey said as police closed off Charles Street between Summit and Central avenues, the block where she lives.

Comey did not provide any more information but a source said that police found a 55-gallon drum filled with concrete in the backyard of a home on Charles Street.

JERSEY CITY — Police have found what they believe are remains in a cement-filled drum in the basement of an apartment where a missing Jersey City woman lives, authorities said tonight.

"We believe it contains remains," Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said tonight. "If we have human remains we don't know at this point."

The 55-gallon drum was found in the basement of the same Charles Street building where Randy "Amanda" Lehrer lived with her husband, Steven Acuna, and their 11-month-old daughter before she disappeared.
