NY NY - Suzanne Lyall, 19, Collins Circle at SUNY, Albany, 2 March 1998

Successful true crime writers Gregg Olsen (Abandoned Prayers is one of Gregg's many true crime books), and M. William Phelps (Most recently: Murder in the Heartland), have begun a weblog together:

http://crimerant.com

They've got a separate category up for Suzanne Lyall:

http://www.crimerant.com/?cat=9

With my new weblog (an additional weblog, not a replacement), http://crimeblog.us, I've joined Matt and Gregg in blogging about Suzanne's disappearance. My first entry at crimeblog.us is here:

http://crimeblog.us/?p=12

I recommend reading the CrimeRant entries first and then moving on to mine, if you're inclined. I take a close look at Suzanne's fiance when she disappeared, Rich "Infynite Darklyte"/"Psionic Alpha" Condon.

An interesting guy. Whose interaction with the Lyall family and authorities since Suzanne's disappearance has been interesting.

April 6th is designated as Missing Persons Day in New York. That date marks Suzanne Lyall's birthday. The UAlbany student disappeared in March of 1998, and her parents, Doug and Mary Lyall, established The Center for HOPE in her honor. They've become a voice for families of missing people across the country.

"Sometimes it only takes a couple people who have their heart in the right place and who are ready to work hard towards something to get things done, and Doug and Mary Lyall have demonstrated that," said Assembly Minority Leader Jim Tedisco.

This is the sixth year the Lyalls and families across the country have united to honor their missing loved ones, but this is the first year they've gathered around a common monument--the Missing Persons Monument in downtown Albany.

"When I come up the steps to see it, i'm so overwhelmed by it," said Mary Lyall.

Hello,

For all Campaign for Missing Volunteers and other interested persons:

Media Alert: CNN American Morning for Wednesday, June 13, 2007, 8:40AM EST

Wednesday morning our friends Doug and Mary Lyall from the Center for Hope in central NY will be appearing live on the CNN morning show, American Morning. They are representing Project Jason's Campaign for the Missing and will be discussing DNA as it relates to the campaign legislation and missing persons. I was unable to go because of our planned event here for Jason's 6 year missing date.

I am pleased for this opportunity to further our cause and educate not only the public, but the need-to-know; LE, families of the missing, and medical examiners and coroners. At the same time, it will bring some awareness for the Lyall's missing daugher, Suzanne, and our missing son, Jason.

Hi,

http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/l/lyall_suzanne.html

I'm brand new here although I've been reading for the past 6 months. All of you are doing fine work and I envy your expertise. I've been doing research on my own and believe I MAY have discovered a match. The time is right, the location is right, and the facial reconstruction looks like a match to me.

My problem is I emailed the New York State Troopers, but my email came back because they don't seem to use that email address any more. Yes, I could call, but I'm afraid to, afraid I may be wrong and sound like an idiot. Can anyone get me an updated email address to the New York State Troopers? I've looked, but cannot find one. I've also heard people on here weren't treated as kindly, or taken as seriously as they might have been by LE. I am trying to avoid that sort of thing by using email.

Thanks, and keep up the good work.

Welcome to WS, AfterMidnight!

I have read here countless times where someone has contacted law enforcement with positive results. I think you should go ahead and give them a phone call.

I'm certainly not a pro at this, but I'm hoping some of the posters here that are will post soon! It seems like it's a slow night, so don't take anything the wrong way.

Hi there!
I think that you need to call the troopers. I'd totally feel anxious in your shoes, but I know that the Lyall family needs you to turn in your tip.

If they aren't kind, or responsive, that will be on them.

Thanks for the encouragement, guys, I really need it. Yeah, I am anxious. I figure if I can see the resemblance and put two and two together, why hasn't someone already done it? Maybe they have and it isn't a match. I read somewhere on here that there should be a data base telling who the missing or UIDs AREN'T. That would save a lot of wasted time and aggravation.

I finally did find the "crimetip" address, a short while ago while researching another case. It wasn't easy or readily apparent. They need to keep this stuff updated if they want help from the public.

Here's the url to Susan Lyall:
http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/...l_suzanne.html

Here's the url to the UID which I think is her:

http://www.troopers.state.ny.us/Wan...w.cfm?ID=12a0ad41-5ec6-4fdb-8fb6-ef27c962c44b

Check it out and tell me what you think. I did send an email to the "crimetip" address. If you guys think this is a POSSIBLE, I'll pursue it further next week. I don't know if you see what I see, but I believe this is Susan Lyall.

Just my 2 cents:

I don't think it's Suzanne. Her parents are very active in the cause and knowledgeable. I am about 99% sure that their DNA is in CODIS to match against UID's. This UID indicates DNA and dentals available.

What about Audrey May Herron? She's closer to the Catskills than Suzanne was.

I totally see the resemblence between Susan and the reconstruction and I'm glad you emailed it.

Herron went missing 14 days AFTER the UID was discovered. I believe that lets her out entirely.

Your point aboud CODIS is well taken. Is there any way we can find out who is entered there and who is not? Oftimes we think something has been done and it hasn't. You're probably right about this, but being a novice, I have no way of knowing what has been done and what has not. I can only see what I see and put what I see together with the facts given to me. There has to be a better way. Any suggestions?

I'm glad you see what I see. This UID is just speaking to me. Add a little life to the reconstruction and I see Lyall.

Right or wrong, I'm glad I tried. I believe we need a better system of knowing who's been eliminated and who has not. It would save so much time, resources, and possibly grief.

I did receive an email response that said, in essence, my info would be forwarded to the investigator of this case.

Thanks for the replies.

I think they look very similar. Let's hope there it is a match so the Lyalls at least have some closure on Suzanne's disappearance.

Let me restate......

I do find a resemblance to Suzanne, and you are certainly doing the right thing to submit it to LE.

In retrospect, I do not know for certain that the DNA tag on the UID means they took a sample from the body only, or does it mean the sample was processed? I do not know this. If they did process it, did they place the results in both CODIS and a state database? I don't know that either. It would be good to know that the DNA tag means they did process it and place the results in all applicable databases. Since I don't know that for sure, then anything's possible.

Thanks for working on this.

One of the Capital Region's well known missing person cases is once again getting attention.

It's been exactly a decade (article dated 3/3/08) since Suzanne Lyall disappeared from the campus of the University at Albany.

Lyall's parents, Doug and Mary Lyall, continue to hope that someone will come forward with information that can help crack the case.

"Here we are 10 years later. I would give anything to have her walk in the door right now. I would give anything," said Mary Lyall.

A lot of good info on The Charley Project Website.

It appears a connection between Suzanne and the girl who disappeared 13 yrs earlier (Karen I believe) is that they were both at malls and then took a bus to or near the SUNY campus.

Somewhat O/T : I know this area well; in 1997 I lived in a housing development across the street from Crossgates mall. I shopped regularly at Crossgates, and at the Colonie Center where the other girl was shopping. I do not know what it was like in 1985, as I am not a native of Albany, but in circ. 1997, I did NOT feel comfortable shopping at CrossGates at night. There always seemed to be alot of "riff-raff" around, and "inner city troublemakers". I actually preferred to shop at Colonie Centre, which was a nicer mall. The SUNY campus was also not too far from a rather bad section of Albany. I wonder if someone saw her at the mall, got on her bus, and followed her to the campus. I also wonder who else got off that bus stop when she did. It is somewhat surprising that they have not found her body yet; although I have been to the SUNY campus, I am not too familiar with the terrain and landscape of the campus. If this was a crime of opportunity, I would think her body would have been found somewhat quickly, unless she was well hidden or put in a dumpster.
