UPDATE: PRESS BRIEFING SET FOR 1 P.M. TODAY; NEW CLEAR CHANNEL BILLBOARDS; TEAMS SEARCHING NEWELL CREEK AREA; D. AND McCUNE MAY BE USING PUBLIC TRANSIT

Morning updates on the search for 13-year-old endangered runaway S. D., who may have left with 40-year-old male Kelsey McCune:

- A press briefing is set for 1 p.m. at the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Brooks Building (9101 SE Sunnybrook Blvd., Clackamas, OR 97015).

- The search is continuing, with the help of the FBI and other agencies. SWAT personnel, working with search-and-rescue (SAR) coordinators, are searching the Newell Creek area in Oregon City. SWAT is a uniquely skilled team well-qualified to search this terrain. They are also the largest law-enforcement resource that could be activated quickly to work with SAR coordinators.

- Authorities believe S. D., age 13, and Kelsey "Patrick" McCune, age 40, may be using public transit. They may also have camping equipment. The Sheriff's Office is concerned about D.'s welfare because of the record-cold temperatures expected to last for days -- leading CCSO to deploy extra resources in this case.

- D.'s family and law enforcement are deeply concerned, and urge her to contact 911 or family as soon as possible to make sure she is safe.

- Kelsey McCune has no known address, but is known to make money doing freelance computer work. He may be carrying large duffel bags and/or backpacks with camping-type gear.

- Thanks to the help and cooperation of the FBI and Clear Channel, a new billboard is going up on McLoughlin Boulevard featuring the latest known photo of S. D. Two more Clear Channel billboards are also planned for Washington County. An image of this billboard is attached to this release.

- Also attached to this release is a PDF of the latest public bulletin on the case. It contains a Photoshopped image of Kelsey McCune without facial hair.

- Again: If you see S. D. or Kelsey McCune, please call 911 immediately. Tips and info can also be sent to our Tip Line -- by calling (503) 723-4949 or by using the online e-mail form at http://www.clackamas.us/sheriff/forms/tip.html

"freelance computer work" oh no!

what on earth would she see in him? I wonder how he got her to go with him?

On one of her SM sites S. says she wants to join the army...

I wonder if this perp "groomed" her by telling her they would be living a lifestyle as a soldier in the fields (battlegrounds/etc.) would... (Camping can have this quality, IMO)...

He may have been preying on her interest in "roughing it"... So to speak...

Just an idea....

Has any clever WSer found a police record of Kelsey McCune?

something tells me this is NOT his "first rodeo"...

(I am especially alerted by LE's statement that there are more concerns than they are able to share with the public...)

'Endangered' teen with glass-eyed man
S. Do. is 13, Kelsey McCune is 40

"Authorities said the teen may have left willingly with McCune, who is a friend of her father's. McCune spent Thanksgiving with the D. family."

"S. D. has no history of running away or of suicide attempts."

More at link above...

This man was allowed in the home by the father it seems. I wonder why now he thinks she is in danger --- would anybody let someone you consider dangerous into your home for Thanksgiving?

UPDATE (12/5, 1:44 p.m.): STATEMENT FROM S. D.'S PARENTS, STEPHANIE AND JOHN D., READ BY SISTER SARAH D. DURING TODAY'S 1 P.M. PRESS CONFERENCE

SARAH D.: I want to read a statement to S. from her parents, John and Stephanie. They've asked me to speak for the family.

S., your mom and dad are worried about you. Your brothers and sisters are worried about you. Your friends are worried about you. It's cold out there, and you just can't be out in that cold.

Please call us, or call 911, and let us know you're safe. Please come home.

A lot of worried people are out looking for you right now. Your friends are sharing their concern and spreading the word. And the community is doing everything they can to find you.

Please call and let ALL of us know you're okay.

Your family and friends love and miss you.

This is looking more and more like the Hannah Anderson abduction. Both families befriended the abductors. He may have groomed S. by starting off as her father's friend. Maybe slipping her money or buying her gifts. There have no reports that he had a car and assuming they are on public transport. But if he planned this ahead of time he could have bought a car. From what I have read cars are very cheap in America or he could have rented a car and could be in another state by now. If she disappeared from her bed she could have left when the family went to bed so could have had an 8 hour head start. How far could you travel in 8 hours? They are possibly in another state by now.
Just my thoughts.

There is something really unsettling about the "we are concerned for her safety...can not tell you all reasons why" statement.

Wouldn't a 40 year old man and a 13 year old girl traveling with duffel bags and camping equipment in December in Oregon stand out? It's not exactly camping season. Besides, she is supposed to be in school this time of the year.

She reminds me of my niece when she was that age. So cute and has an attitude, which is not necessarily a bad thing. My niece is a survivor and is now a very successful young woman in her mid-20's.
