GUILTY OR - Neil Beagley, 16, dies as parents rely on faith healing, Oregon City, June 2008

Sadly, I must report that the Followers of Christ (their chosen name--I don't happen to be in agreement) are back in court concerning yet another sick child. All I can say is thank you Judge Van Dyk!! Finally some action to save a child before it's too late:

Judge orders state custody, medical care for Oregon faith healers' child

A Clackamas County judge ruled Thursday that a couple who belong to a church that embraces faith healing must surrender their child for failing to provide medical care.
.
Circuit Judge Douglas V. Van Dyk gave the state temporary custody of the child and ordered medical treatment as directed by doctors at Oregon Health & Science University.

The age and medical condition of the child were not disclosed.

Timothy J. Wyland, 44,and Rebecca J. Wyland, 23,of Beavercreek appeared in court without an attorney. The couple, members of the Followers of Christ church, seemed stunned by events and close to tears...."

and

"....The 1,200-member Followers of Christ church has received extensive media attention in recent years. The church rejects secular medicine and relies on faith-healing rituals -- laying on of hands, anointing with oil, prayer and fasting -- to treat illnesses....."

and

".....The Wyland case is unusual because the authorities intervened before a child died...."

and

"....After decades during which Followers of Christ children died from treatable medical conditions, the district attorney's office has taken a hard line with the church. The state medical examiner's office reported that during the past 30 years more than 20 children of church members had died of preventable or curable illnesses...."

Judge won't return baby to Followers of Christ parents for now

"A judge today refused to return a 7-month-old girl to her parents, members of an Oregon City church that embraces faith-healing, after hearing testimony that the child could lose vision in one eye because she didn't get medical care. Details of the girl's condition emerged during a four-hour Clackamas County Circuit Court hearing...."

and

"...The state medical examiner's office has reported that during the past 30 years more than 20 children of church members have died of preventable or curable illnesses...."

and

"...The Wylands said they never considered getting medical attention for the growth and would not have if DHS had not intervened....."

This whole story is so sad for those of us in Oregon, who read about these cases day after day. This group seems to genuinely love their children but stops short of seeking medical care for them. I would make the assumption that this is still a nursing infant. It is really incomprehensible. What is the answer?

An update on the Wyland case. I'm almost wondering if we shouldn't have the thread title changed to something like "Child Abuse within the Followers of Christ Church/OR". Just when you start to have a little empathy for parents who truly believe in prayer and must, like most parents, want the best for their child, a picture changes everything. The photos obtained by the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office did it for me. Yep, that's abuse. Plain and simple. This sweet little one deserves every bit of medical help the state of Oregon is giving her. If her parents don't cherish her and care for her properly, the State must step in.

Faith-healing parents fight to get baby back, face criminal charges

"A Beavercreek couple whose child was placed in state custody last month by a Clackamas County judge has been indicted by a grand jury on charges of first-degree criminal mistreatment and will be arraigned "imminently," according to a deputy district attorney.

But the parents, who shun most traditional medical care in favor of faith healing, are still attempting to regain custody under a home-monitoring plan that would require them to provide medical treatment.

Timothy J. Wyland, 44, and Rebecca J. Wyland, 23, will likely face the criminal charges for failing to provide proper care to their 7-month-old daughter, AMW......."

and

"A doctor previously testified that AMW may lose vision in her left eye because of a quickly growing mass of blood vessels known as a hemangioma, that has pushed her eyeball down and outward and affected the eye socket. Van Dyk refused to return the child to their home about two weeks later...."

and

"....the child was "still in a very precarious and uncertain medical condition," and the state was not yet ready to support any plan returning the child home.

"We're spinning our wheels here, because there has not been open communication from the parents," [District Attorney] Gilmartin said. "They have stiff-armed us, and we're moving backwards" in terms of a safety plan, she continued...."

and

"The church has a lengthy history of children dying from untreated medical conditions."

I just noticed that there is a comment under the above linked article asking why the Wylands need lawyers. Can't they rely on prayer? That's an excellent point IMO.

Oh dear God! Why did I click on that and see that picture. Life sentences are what's needed for them. 'Nuff said.

I won't pretend to understand their beliefs. Especially not after seeing that little ones eye in the photo. I'm sorry, as much as I believe in prayer, I think prayer would be better spent asking for a specialist to help my child. Someone with knowledge and experience.

I'll be heart broken if baby girl loses sight in that eye. I guess it's possible it could/would happen anyway, but, something tells me had they consulted someone earlier the damage could have been minimized. Why put your child through that? (rhetorical).

In my opinion, Steely Dan, you clicked on the photo because you care. The child is beautiful and deserves all of us looking at her and recognizing what needs to be done. Oregon has dropped the ball on so many cases lately. I'm very pleased that they did NOT return this sweet girl to her parents.

IMO, their love is conditional and that never flies with children. When you find yourself with a child in your care, it is your duty to do whatever is necessary to make that child's life as pleasant and productive as possible. These parents have a different agenda than the rest of us.

Trust me, there are plenty of fine foster and adoptive families (me included!!) who will be more than willing to "play by the rules" and get this girl the help she needs and adore her. Parenting takes a village. Someone might not like that statement but it's true.

I'm appalled that the judge was wavering on this. Couldn't she see that the parents were only saying what she "wanted to hear"? Thank goodness for a bulldog of an attorney for the state and the child.

Faith-healing trial to bring Followers of Christ church back into spotlight
May 22, 2011

"A couple whose reliance on faith healing threatened their daughter's eyesight will go on trial this week in Clackamas County. The case returns the spotlight on Followers of Christ church, an Oregon City congregation that rejects medical care in favor of spiritual treatment. Timothy and Rebecca Wyland are charged with first-degree criminal mistreatment for failing to seek medical care for their daughter, A, now 18 months old. In the past two years, Clackamas County prosecuted two other couples from the same church whose children died from untreated ailments....."

and

"....She [A. Wyland] has since improved under court-ordered medical treatment...."

and

"....The Followers of Christ have a long history of children dying from treatable medical conditions. Outrage over the deaths led Oregon legislators a decade ago to restrict but not eliminate parents' ability to use a religious defense in such cases. Legislation now under consideration would strip the remaining religious exemptions in Oregon law. The House approved the legislation and the Senate is expected to pass a similar bill this week. The legislation has no effect on the Wyland case....."

(Not sure if everyone knows but our current governor, John Kitzhaber, is a medical doctor and a parent of a young son.)

I have to wonder if some other weirdness is going on, something besides lack of medical treatment. These people are nuts, who knows what they are doing to their kids in the name of "faith".

I wonder too, Sonya. Either upthread on this case or on the other Followers of Christ thread we have, there's some info from a friend of one of the young adults from this group. I'm not positive but I believe there's been a lot of intermarriage in this group.

I was saddened to see that this family won't be affected by the upcoming changes in our laws.

The information I was referring to is on another thread we have on the group:

OR~Legal protections for Followers of Christ to end/no more faith-healing reliance - Websleuths Crime Sleuthing Community

If you scroll through, you'll see that our poster, Mommy23, has some experience with these people and gives us a good bit of information. Her story starts on the 2nd page in post #32.

There's also this thread:

Another "Followers of Christ" child death in OR - Websleuths Crime Sleuthing Community

Obviously they are just more gullible, weak and probably mentally unbalanced people who have fallen prey to one of the many cults in America. No child should die and certainly not if it could have been prevented.

Well let's keep in mind 99.5% of the time the prayer "works" and the sick kids recover. Inbreeding usually doesn't throw mutations for a few generations, unless the common parent already has a bunch of genetic problems.

The amount of mind control these groups manage is often astounding. No doubt it becomes a matter of "if our calls for healing are not being answered SOMEONE is not trying hard enough, someone's faith is lacking, someone is at fault here" then the suspicions can start! The pressure to conform becomes so intense (and usually has been intense for years) so no one wants to voice any doubt and be the one that is singled out as the "problem" and may be responsible for the fact the faith healing is not working.

The leader/s end up with complete control because they often micromanage and make people afraid to deviate in the tiniest ways else be "shunned". Many will also use diet as an aid, if they are seen as prophetic they can get their followers to change diet, fast, etc...which double or triple the effects of mind control.

Diet and exhaustion are basic brain washing steps used by most all cults, make sure they aren't eating well (especially protein) and wear them out physically, the mind becomes pliable and open to suggestion, use group dynamics to shame/ridicule any rabble rousers. The diet is always justified as a "fast or a cleansing" and is typically vegetarian, or maybe food is provided but for some reason it it just doesn't taste right and people end up eating very little.

If they mess with your protein levels they are messing with your mind. A professor once advised us in college to "always take a jar of peanut butter and some crackers with you to any retreat!".

Yes, you are correct, Sonya. Brainwashing always includes food deprivation. I wanted to make one thing clear to anyone just beginning to read. As far as I know, almost all the FOC are born into the group. I haven't heard of any "conversions". I don't think that they witness as some Christians do.

Anyway, the Wyland trial is underway. I guess this is a good place to give updates:

Defense in faith-healing trial of Timothy, Rebecca Wyland accuses state of religious discrimination

A detailed article about the opening statements from the State and the defense. And keep in mind that the new Oregon law concerning children and medical care does not apply to this case.

Not getting some sort of "medical attention" for an ill child is not going to fly in Oregon anymore. Thank goodness. The proof is in the pudding. This little girl is doing quite well.

Timothy, Rebecca Wyland guilty of criminal mistreatment in faith-healing trial
June 7, 2011

"A Clackamas County jury spent one hour deliberating Tuesday before unanimously finding an Oregon City couple guilty of felony criminal mistreatment for treating their infant daughter with faith-healing rather than taking her to a doctor. Timothy and Rebecca Wyland face up to five years in prison but are likely to receive probation and possibly some time in jail...."

and

"....The case is the latest involving members of Oregon City's Followers of Christ Church, which considers medical treatment a rejection religious faith. The Wylands are the third church couple to be prosecuted over the past two years for failing to provide medical treatment to their children. In two previous cases, the children died. In the Wyland case, 18-month-old Alayna has improved under court-ordered medical care. The swift and unanimous verdict stunned the Wylands, their attorneys and about 20 church members in attendance...."

and

"....Clackamas County District Attorney John Foote, who has had several faith-healing trials under his watch, released a short statement: "We agree with the jury's verdict and appreciate their service. There is another case pending trial so we will have no further comment." Foote was referring to another couple from the church whose son was born prematurely and died nine hours later. They are scheduled to go trial in September on charges of second-degree manslaughter...."

There's a problem with this headline. Sadly it was not a "healing". The child suffered greatly before the state stepped in and got her the medical care she desperately needed.

Rebecca and Timothy Wyland sentenced to 90 days in jail, probation in Oregon City faith healing
June 24, 2011

"An Oregon City couple who treated their infant daughter with faith healing rather than take her to a doctor were sentenced today in Clackamas County circuit court to 90 days in jail and three years probation. Clackamas County Circuit Judge Jeffrey S. Jones also required Timothy and Rebecca Wyland to notify the probation department when spiritual healing methods are used. "Your prayers should complement not compete with proper medical care," Judge Jones said...."

and

"...AW [the child] arrived at the courthouse with her parents, wearing a polka dot dress. The hemangioma was noticeable above her left eye but greatly reduced in size. AW held a couple of small stuffed animal toys as she was held by Rebecca before proceedings began. Doctors who testified at the Wyland's trial said AW's condition easily could have been controlled with medication. The hemangioma would have posed no threat to the eye if AW, now 18 months old, had been taken to a doctor when the growth a splotchy reddish mark above her left eye started its rapid spread...."

This ruling kind of surprised me, truth be told. At least the Wylands were honest and didn't just tell the state workers what they thought they wanted to hear.

Oregon City parents convicted in faith-healing trial lose custody bid
July 22, 2011

"A Clackamas County judge said Friday that the state will retain legal custody of A. Wyland, whose devoutly religious parents treated the girl's vision-threatening medical condition with prayer instead of taking her to a doctor. The parents, Timothy and Rebecca Wyland, were convicted last month of first-degree criminal mistreatment and sentenced to 90 days in jail and three years probation. As a condition of probation, the Wylands must follow a court-ordered treatment plan.

Circuit Judge Douglas Van Dyk said he was concerned the Wylands would not continue necessary long-term medical treatment once off probation. He denied a motion to return custody of Alayna to the Wylands and will review the matter in July 2012. Van Dyk cited statements Timothy Wyland recently made to a child welfare worker who asked whether the couple would follow through with the treatment plan without state supervision. "Only time will tell," Wyland reportedly replied, adding that that God is the "best healer" and decides who will be cured...."

and

"....Although she [A] lives at home, the Department of Human Services has had legal custody since last July and supervises her care."

My guess is that this article will upset some who aren't even supporters of the Followers of Christ. Some might say that billing the family is a stretch. But just imagine what would happen if a family was cited for not using a car seat and could afford one. They'd most likely be penalized for not using one, be provided one and then billed for it. Makes sense to me. Many don't realize that families are billed for foster care and medical costs when children are removed from the home by court order. Not all can or will repay the state but they are billed.

Followers of Christ couple may have to pay medical bills for child who nearly went blind
August 29, 2011

"Two members of an Oregon City faith-healing church may have to pay around $26,000 in medical bills that piled up after the state took custody of their daughter and got treatment for the child, who faced blindness in one eye.

Timothy and Rebecca Wyland, members of the Followers of Christ, were convicted of first-degree criminal mistreatment in June and sentenced to 90 days in jail and three years of probation for failing to get medical care for their infant daughter, AW, who has an abnormal growth of blood vessels that once engulfed her left eye.

The Wylands' church rejects medical treatment in favor of spiritual remedies, including prayer and anointment with olive oil...."
