Southeast States - AL, AR, LA, FL, GA, KY, MS, NC, SC, TN - Weather Discussion

Goodlettsville is close to Hendersonville, which is just north east of Nashville.

Here's what I've found out about it. Eight of the deaths were in Sumner County, north of Nashville. CNN's Wolf reported tornadoes touched down near City Hall in Goodlettsville, north of Nashville, and in Greenbrier, northwest of the city.

Sadly, it sounds like they got another dish of it. I'm so sorry!

Yeah and it happened at 630 this morning, they were probably sleeping, what a tragedy...

Tornado flips cars, homes in N.C.; 8 die By ESTES THOMPSON, Associated Press Writer

A tornado flipped cars, shredded trees and ripped mobile homes to pieces in this little riverside community early Thursday, killing at least eight people, authorities said.

The disaster the two-day death toll from a devastating line of thunderstorms that swept across the South to 12.

Kip Godwin, chairman of the Columbus County Commission, said authorities had nearly concluded their search of the area where all the deaths occurred — a cluster of trailers and an adjacent neighborhood of brick homes — and had accounted for everyone.

Hospital officials said four children were in critical condition.

The storms that began Wednesday unleashed tornadoes and straight-line winds that overturned mobile homes and tractor-trailers, uprooted trees and knocked down power lines across the South.

In Louisiana, a man died Wednesday when a tornado struck his home. In South Carolina, a utility worker checking power lines Thursday during the storm was electrocuted. In North Carolina, two people died in car crashes as heavy rain pounded the state, dropping as much as five inches in some areas.

Off the coast, a Coast Guard helicopter lowered a pump to a fishing boat that was taking on water in 15-foot seas about 50 miles from Charleston. One crewman was aboard the 34-foot boat, which the Coast Guard escorted back to land.

The tornado that struck Riegelwood — situated on the Cape Fear River about 20 miles west of Wilmington — hit shortly after 6:30 a.m.

"There was no warning. There was no time," said Cissy Kennedy, a radiologist's assistant who lives in the area. "It just came out from nowhere."

As many as 40 mobile homes were damaged before the tornado crossed a highway and leveled three brick homes. Some of the dead were believed to be children.

I've been watching the coverage on T.V., so tragic. I believe when they were interviewing it was said they only had a 16 minute warning. Two children have been reported among the dead.

Back in the early 80's, we had a tornado come through (without warning) early one morning. I remember getting up, just by chance, and looking out the window. It was a funny color...sort of green. I pulled the window open, and it was extremely quiet. Then I heard what sounded like a freight train. I yelled at hubby and we ran and grabbed the kids (our youngest was 2 months old), and we RAN to the basement.

We were lucky. We only lost part of our roof and most of our trees. Some of our neighbors weren't so lucky, but thankfully, no one was hurt or killed.

My thoughts and prayers are with everyone in that area. How horrible.

We are OK! It was funny because I didn't even know about the storms on Wednesday (I hardly ever watch the news). But Thursday morning my son looked out the door and said, "Wow, the sky is pink!" I looked at it and said, "Red sky at night sailor's delight, red sky in morning, sailor take warning." Then I told him a bad storm was coming. When he got home from school he was like, wow mom, you were right. I guess that old saying is true.

It has been a rough morning for most of Central Florida. A line of heavy weather tracked across Central Florida between 2:30 a.m. and 7 a.m.

All of Central Florida has been under tornado watches and warnings most of the night. The weather caused severe accidents and cut down power to many.

Kim Miller from the Florida Highway Patrol said that tornadoes and severe weather caused wrecks on Interstate 4 near State Road 44 in DeLand involving five tractor-trailers and two vehicles. Three people were taken to the hospital, however none of the injuries are believed to be life threatening.
Lady Lake
Lady Lake Police reported that a tornado touched down around 3:15 a.m. Power outages have been reported in Lady Lake. The storm producing the tornado crossed Lake Griffin, moving south of Emeralda and toward Umatilla in Lake County.

In Lady Lake, the North Lake Presbyterian Church, located on Rolling Acers Road, behind Home Depot, has been set up as a shelter for anyone in need.

Lake County
Christie Mysinger from the Lake County Sheriff's Office said, "We have several unconfirmed fatalities and many injuries, structural damage to homes, trees and power lines down in roads." Since that announcement, there have been two confirmed deaths in Lake County.

Deaths Reported as Storm Moves Across Central Florida

TAVARES, Fla. — Severe thunderstorms tore through central Florida early Friday, damaging homes, causing power outages and killing at least seven people, authorities said.

Sgt. John Herrell of the Lake County Sheriff's Office confirmed seven people died in the Lake Mack area of DeLand.

WOFL reported several tornados touched down.

Mike Turner, a technician with the National Weather Service in Melbourne, said it appeared at least one fatality occurred in the Lady Lake area, northeast of Orlando.

The storms moved across Sumter and Lake counties around 3:15 a.m., then moved to Volusia County, said Peggy Glitto, a weather service meteorologist.

From the video being shown on FOX news, it looks bad. "The Villages" seem to have been hit really bad. Major damage being reported in Deland, Lake Mack and The Villages. Authorities are still doing search and rescue. They are reporting "mass casualties." Early reports of 300-500 homes totally destroyed.

I hope that your hubby's Uncle is OK MrsMush99. Lake county looks like it has severe damage. Lake County Sheriff's said " We have complete and total devastation."
I have several friends that I am anxious to hear from. We have several Websleuth's members in that general area too. I hope that they are all OK.

My mom and dad had close friends who have retired to Lady Lake. They are trying to find out about them.

What a terrible story.

More tornado warnings on CNN just now!!

Another tornado just touched down in Indian River county at Grant which is near Vero Beach.

those poor people--terrible storm--Fatal tornados are rare in Florida--Except for the 1998 storms, you almost never hear of any fatalities--That's because most of the tornados we get are F0's, winds 50 to 90 mph--but these look like F2's! winds 150 mph!---Parts of north central Florida look like the Midwest! Midwest tornados are typically F2's and above--The 1999 OKlahoma City Tornado had winds clocked by mobile radar at 317 mph!!-44 people were killed and 660 were injured---The 1998 tornados killed dozens here in Florida in the very same area as these today--The great 1925 Tornado that went thru the midwest killed 689 people, the worst tornado in history--latest death toll from this storm today is now fourteen! awful
