Identified! The Girls in the Club

Look what I found! It seems there was a jazz club called the Five Spot in the Village during the sixties. Several of the nightclub girl's pictures show a poster in the background for a Jazz Quartet. There is also a watercolor looking drawing by somebody Thompson. I found info on the Five Spot at:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_Spot

and at http://www.5spotartifacts.com/index.php I found a picture of a painting by Bob Thompson for sale.

Oh Lord my momma hung out there. No joke. She's a jazz "snob" we tease.

I was just thinking Thelonious Monk wasn't having no nuddies up there when he played. Bird? Maybe. Naw, I am kidding. This is a cool find, Redbird.

BTW, in the background of those club girls is a picture of it's a fable I can't think of the name? It's Philapino lore about some goddess in the sky. I'll post it although I doubt it will help.

Honestly i thought I saw in the background of some of the club girls phots German writing. German comics. The one sign we got with the "F" on it though appears to be Mexican colors.

Somebody out in this world has to know where that joint is......UNLESS Alcala set his own cellar club up.

Are we in NYC? Germany? The Philapines? Just don't tell me Charlie Mingus had nuddies around while he was creating!

The first link says The Five Spot Cafe was originally located at 5 Cooper Square, New York City then relocated to 2 St. Marks Place. I couldn't find when it closed. I'm pretty sure it's the same place because of the Bob Thompson print on the wall which was listed at the http://www.5spotartifacts.com/index.php as sold by the owner. Actually it is another print that was sold and there is a picture of it. Definitely the same artist. How it ended up with what looks like topless girls is still a mystery. I would like to research it some more, or maybe somebody else could help. There are five or six pictures taken there. They probably knew him.

The Jazz Quartet poster is for the "Modern Jazz Quartet", I linked it earlier on. Trying to date that one, I cannot find that particular poster, but lots of others are out there, they were very popular. Look it up on Wiki. :)

The original Five Spot was a neighborhood bar and had been in the Termini family for more than 25 years. It was not particularly a Bowery bar, for there are many such that cater almost exclusively to the thick tastes and thin pockets of the skid-row clientele. When the Termini sons, Joe and Iggy, came out of the Army, the father Termini gradually turned the place over to them. They in turn found themselves getting as customers more and more of the Village expatriates who had moved into the neighborhood. These included sculptor David Smart and painter Herman Cherry, both of whom hounded the management to put in some live entertainment -- specifically, some live jazz. The Terminis finally capitulated.

A Night at the Five Spot

This is the only other thing I could find by googling on the Five Spot. This article does mention it had red walls.

I wasn't able to find out when the Termini brother closed. As best I can tell it is currently a soul food place that gets horrible reviews.

The Thelonious Monk poster might be dateable.
Yet another girl:

He didn't keep this photo because it's good photography:

What does the poster say? Reuben something. Kadeem? Kadesh?

There are a few more "new" pics of the girls in the club in the recent NYPD release (silly PR campaign)...Perhaps someone would like to spend an inordinate amount of time loading their pictures and posting them here?

Be warned...Whatever programs they used to issue their pics, it's an internet "neanderthal" experience...

MOO

Ditto and double thanks from me Redbird. Look back at my post #22 I think it is and I was swearing this couldn't be the Five Spot.

Being raised up on Anita O'Day, Mingus, Monk, Miss Billie I never dreamed my mom was cavorting in a club with a pack of nude women. Then again she said she recalled like showgirls in pasties, but nothing more.

So, what the heck is going on here? It's like a cattle call. Are these ladies dancing, posing, modeling or what? They sure ain't Chet Baker. I'd truly like to know what was going on in there during or after hours.

You just made me think of something I hadn't considered before. Could this have been a lingerie show? Maybe these gals aren't even nude, just dressed really scantily? Though from what I'm seeing now there are two males on stage with them in the new pics.

YES. I saw one guy I think is Alcala, BillyLee.

I can't imagine chicks dancing around naked or stripping to Thelonius Monk. The man was a great visionary, but hey. There was no "Brick House" being played that's for sure.

Besides this creep being a murderer I kind of despise him for making a mockery of jazz da*n it all. Blues yeah maybe ya might get feeling it and take something off, but we're talking Charlie Parker for heavens sake.

Wait. Alot of jazz musicians had many, many women. Could this have been a free for all on who got picked? I'd ask my mom, but she'll just go into her jazz snobbery and remind me ow close she sat to Chet Baker.

Sorry, not helping identify anyone, but these new pictures got my goat. Especially the boy with the bike.

Special props to Donjeta for sharing them.

three notes about this picture. 1- Im rather sure now that black box is a "security" camera of sorts, 2- whats on the left of the photo? long, straight? black hair?and thirdly as for the lingerie show seeing the girl on the right of this photo really made me think maybe... it looks like she might have something on (or is it a photo smudge?)However I find it odd that these girls dont even have and straps on if it were lingerie.

this "club" is so confusing! sounds absurd, and sorry for the brashness. but with how their all just standing there it makes me think of a "sex slave auction":blushing: but more realistically - maybe its a kinky sort of 'escort' club

If the girls appear more raunchy than was usual for that club then it might have been a private function, maybe outside of normal hours or in a private room? A bucks night maybe? Or maybe a farewell party for someone being deployed overseas? I wonder whether the girls are some of the regular entertainment who were willing to go a bit further when paid more, or whether they were hired specifically for the night because of how far they'd go. Convincing so many girls to get their kit off usually involves a price tag.
