Bumping for Christy and her family. Christy's Grandmother has registered and is just waiting on authorization to post. She so much appreciated all of the heartfelt responses in this thread and it made her feel so good that people care. So, thank you all for your responses.

I am so sorry for your loss. The way you were treated during this horrible tragedy is outrageous. I beleive you should forget anyone in your town or State for that matter and head straight for the

That is where I would start. They need to reopen that case .
At 11:56pm Deputy Lloyd Sherman and another officer saw a car pulled off the highway roughly halfway between the Carroll and Burlison residences and stopped to investigate. In the car were Lay, Amacher and Carroll. Lay told the officers that the car had overheated but refused any offer of help.
So they were the last (4) people to see her alive? Not 2 (4).
That's where I would start. That is why I would push the fact that there was no rape kit. That will get the ball rolling.

I don't get why these kids ( the three? young men) haven't been questioned- do they still live in the town?
They were the last people to see her alive and all they did was write out [conflicting] statements, that's crazy.

In our initial review of an allegation of police misconduct, we assess whether the allegation, if proven, would establish a violation of a federal law the Department has authority to enforce. We also assess whether the allegation potentially could constitute a pattern or practice violation.
We are aware that sporadic bad incidents or the actions of the occasional bad officer do not constitute a pattern or practice of misconduct. In fact, most of the complaints we receive involve such individual claims of misconduct by a specific officer or officers. Unless there is information indicating a pattern of misconduct or systemic practices underlying the misconduct, these individual incidents do not fall within our pattern or practice investigation authority. We take no further action and either close the matter or, if appropriate, refer the complaint to the DOJ offices with responsibility for handling these claims. (Individual claims may be investigated to determine if there is a criminal civil rights violation by an individual officer or if there is prohibited discrimination by a recipient of federal financial assistance.)
With regard to allegations that could potentially constitute a pattern or practice, we look to a variety of sources to determine if there is any information that tends to support the allegations. At this stage of an inquiry, we often consult with any complainants or persons who have contacted us and with other Department of Justice components (including the United States Attorney and the FBI), review published reports about lawsuits or other actions involving the police agency, and consult with other persons who may have information about the complaint. This includes organizations and advocacy groups working on police and civil rights issues; attorneys and parties in civil litigation involving police departments; and prosecutors and criminal defense attorneys. If our initial review does not produce evidence tending to support the existence of a pattern or practice violation, we close the matter. In the last several years, the Department has conducted and closed this kind of initial inquiry in approximately 70 jurisdictions.

That has been the question in a lot of our minds here. This case really bothers me and I think about Christy a lot and the unfairness of it all. As I stated above, Christy's Grandmother has joined the site and she is waiting on authorization to post. Once she gets it, I'm sure she can tell us more. She emailed me today and let me know how all of the replies and care shown in this thread helped her tremendously, just knowing that people care.narlacat said:

what a terrible story... just the usual 'boy's club'. thank you for making us aware of this. good for her grandmother for not being quiet and shutting up about it. she's right, i am glad she kept the photos and i AM outraged. reminds me of an australian movie i saw many years ago called "shame". of course this kind of thing has been going on since the dawn of humanity... but what century are we in now? can we not do better than this? i wonder if her family ever filed a complaint with the US attorney's office like cabin fever suggested. just for once i would like to see a case like this get justice. maybe she can get her site linked to some other major unsolved crimes sites to attract more attention to the case...?

Yes, the elections are coming up soon. The only problem here is that it's a small town and the good ole boys are always re-elected. We can't seem to get the younger people to have enough interest to want to vote and the older ones want security and they just vote as they always have because to them, it's safe, it won't change their lives.ihadcabinfever said:

This is one of those stories that eat away at me . I think of her and how they thought she was less deseving of Justice and it brings a tear to my eye.
Then it makes me enraged.
You know , not just murderers are sick, some of these people handling her case could use a mental health check up.
Could you imagine the Victims Rights Actovist's face when he replied, She was nothing but a " ....." anyway?
She died of exposure............

My heart goes out to Christy's family because we have walked in this familys shoes. People sometimes just don't understand the pain of not knowing what happened to their loved one. Its been 16 years since that fateful night my brother left to go with friends/family/neighbors and never came home alive after that and these same friends/family/neighbors did not tell the truth and the local LE didn't care, No one made these people talk. The Justice System failed, My mother wasn't even allowed in the court room she was told to sit out in the hall-way
To Christy's family keep the faith and keep doing what you are doing. You did what you needed to do as with my family. We didn't want to go public with our evidence but had no choice.
Our loved ones cases are so much alike
