GUILTY TN - NBA Star Lorenzen Wright, 34, Collierville, 18 July 2010 *Arrests*

About 10 years ago, there was a story where he and three other players donated money to a boy in Memphis that lived with his mother's corpse for a month because he was afraid he'd go to an orphanage. Zo took the kid in and donated some money to the family's funeral expenses.

He was a good guy.

Wow - just wow. After reading early on about his financial woes, divorce, etc., and his spontaneous ways of leaving for a few days, I really didn't think twice.

I really thought he was on a vacation!

I'm just shocked.

Followed his story for a few days and thought something bad had happened when I read he carried much cash with him. I know he often disappeared for a few days but he seemed like the kind of guy who checked in. I was concerned.

Seemed like a decent, caring person after reading the latest on him. Thanks Green Hornet.

May he Rest in Peace.

His ex-wife Sherra, who was reportedly the last person to see Wright alive, and several of her friends are considered suspects of interest early on.

If my math is right, Vince Chase, Turtle and E were likely still in Queens. And Johnny Drama was on Viking Quest.

It was 2002 and I attempted to put together a piece for Sports Illustrated on NBA players and their entourages. Or, to use the racially tinged term of art, their possés. I visited with Gary Payton's crew in Seattle. And Jerry Stackhouse's "Stack Pack" in Detroit. And Ricky Davis' various wingmen in Cleveland.

In the course of the reporting, I heard one story again and again: Lorenzen Wright, then of the Memphis Grizzlies, was the Jordan of possés. Hell, he employed one "bobo" who drew a check just for waking him up every morning.

Like a lot of rumors floating around the sportscape, it contained vestiges of truth, but ultimately it was a lot more complicated. Wright not only kept a sizable entourage, but it also even had a name, "the Wright Stuff." And, yes, Rewis "Raw Dawg" Williams was tasked with getting Wright out of bed each morning at 9:15, a job made even odder by the fact that Wright was married at the time.

This is absolutely awful! My family and I have been fans of Ren since he was in high school, then at Memphis and on in to the NBA. He was one of the Memphis Tiger's all time greats and was, as you all have surmised from the articles, a very good guy. Memphis is in shock right now, and absolutely raw. The public had been told by LE during the week that he was missing that there were no signs of foul play, and we have come to find out that he made a call to 911 on his cell phone on July 19 in which the dispatcher heard gunshots. Ren was shot approximately 12 times. My question is - how long does it take to track down cell phone pings? Could they not have pinpointed the general area of that call and searched for him earlier?? I don't know yet who found him, I guess it could have been LE acting on ping information, but it just seems to me that could have been done quicker.

Speculation here is running rampant. Most think the motive was robbery, as he was known to carry large quantities of cash. Another one of our former Memphis Tigers/NBA players Antonio Burks was shot last year in an attempted robbery at a dice game in South Memphis. Luckily he survived, but probably will not be able to play professional basketball again. I just hope the perpetrator(s) are found - quickly. But none of that will bring Ren back. He had 6 kids. Sometimes there just are no words...

RIP Ren. We love you!

Homicide

http://www.torontosun.com/sports/basketball/2010/07/29/14866881.html

A body riddled with bullets was found in Southeast Memphis Wednesday afternoon in a thickly wooded area near FedEx's world headquarters

"To end his career and his life like this here in some woods, that's not good," friend Stan McKinley said. "You don't do a dog like this. It's just a really sad day for the city as a whole."

According to this latest article from the Commercial Appeal in Memphis, jurisdictional issues between suburbs may have caused a delay in finding Ren's body. The night he was killed, he called 911 on his cell phone and it was answered in Germantown, TN. Dispatchers heard gunshots and then the phone was hung up or turned off. His family reported him missing in Collierville, also a suburb of Memphis. Apparently neither Collierville nor the Memphis PD's knew about the Germantown 911 call until days (over a week possibly) later. They combined forces at that point, conducted a search based on the ping from that cell phone, and found his body within a few short hours. He was actually in Memphis, just on the border with Germantown. Sad, sad situation.

Shot 12-18 times? Someone wanted to make sure this guy was dead.

From an AP story...

Police: Ex-NBA player Wright shot to death
By ADRIAN SAINZ (AP) – 12 hours ago

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Former NBA big man Lorenzen Wright, whose body was found in the woods outside Memphis, was shot to death and the case is being investigated as a homicide, police said Thursday.

Police wouldn't answer questions about motive or suspects. But records indicate that Wright, 34, revered in his hometown as a generous and likable sports hero, was probably carrying a large amount of cash when he disappeared on July 18. A court affidavit obtained by The Associated Press also said Wright had sold two vehicles to a man affiliated with a Memphis drug ring that's suspected in six deaths.

His family filed a missing person report with police on July 22, four days after he was last seen, but investigators repeatedly said they didn't suspect foul play. Wright's mother said in the report that she was worried because his silence was out of character and "he probably has a large amount of cash on him."

Obviously we don't know yet if this group had any involvement in Ren's death, but it does look more and more like a hit. He was murdered (shot about a dozen times) along an out of the way cut off road that he used often to get to his mother's house. A barbed wire fence along that road had been cut and he was walked 100 yards out into a field from that point. So obviously the perps knew him and knew details of his movements and probably were lying in wait for him at that point. Also, a local sports reporter claimed that a few weeks ago, Ren's x wife had three armed men knock on her door asking if he was there. (He was in Atlanta at the time).

One thing I haven't heard discussed here locally is the question of who was driving him, because he had not rented a car upon arriving in Memphis from the airport and had friends driving him around. I guess someone could have loaned him a car, but I haven't heard anything about that yet. The focus here locally is why the Germantown 911 call was not investigated further the night it was placed, July 19th. People here are up in arms over that one.

Sherra Robinson Wright opened her front door one day in recent weeks to find three men she had never seen before, each with guns tucked in their waistbands.

They looked serious and wanted to know if her ex-husband, former NBA star Lorenzen Wright, 34, happened to be inside the Whisperwood Drive home visiting his six children.

No, she assured them, and they drove away.

More Questions than Answers in Lorenzen Wright Investigation

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Lorenzen Wright's ex-wife Sherra Wright has been interviewed by Memphis and Collierville police regarding her ex-husbands disappearance and murder.

Gail Mathes Sherra's divorce attorney insists her client had no financial reason to want her husband dead.

"The worst thing that could happen to her is for Mr. Wright to be deceased. She needed him to be alive and working and helping her support the children," said Mathes.

According to Mathes, Lorenzen had a court order to pay Ms. Wright $10,000 a month in alimony and the children $16,000."

Suspicion is really mounting against Lorenzen's ex wife. She was apparently burning something in the back yard the day he went missing, and Memphis police have been searching their grill and fire pit for the better part of the day on Sunday. Here's a link to the latest Commercial Appeal article from Memphis.

If it turns out that this is the case, how sad for those children!!

ETA Here's a CBS article that describes the suspicious fire. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504083_162-20012352-504083.html
