Trial - Leonard P. Gonzalez, Jr. UPDATE -- Found Guilty

I haven't heard anything about another judge, only Geeker.

I believe it was a PNJ article - I'll see if I can find it later today, if PNJ hasn't already deleted it. I remember I was surprised at the time because Geeker has been on this case since the beginning.

Aaargh, does TruTV have to play that music before and after commercials?!

daisy7, hope you're feeling better!

Defense opening statements paraphrasing:

When you hear the evidence, you're going to ask yourself why if Jr. did this crime would he do such and such? If you have any doubt, you must return a not guilty.

They're done. Ashley's coming on the stand.

Ashley is describing the night of the murders. My heart is breaking for her :(

Jr.'s wife just came to the stand and before she started testifying, the judge called for a 15 minute break. I'm gonna take this opp. to go pick up my son from pre-K a little early :)

Main points his wife is testifying to are...relationship with Pam Wiggins was close, both business-wise and personal to an extent. Karate school was failing so they asked Byrd to invest in it, he thought it was a bad investment but did give 5 grand to fight back program. She was aware of Pam's guns and even the kids messed with them when they helped Pam move. Prosecution is establishing that his mother bought the van.

Next witness is Terri Poff, Pat's adoptive mother. She is testifying about the van she bought.

Jr. has a seething, angry look every time the camera pans to him. JMO.

Lonnie Smith testified that he met with LPG, Jr., Sumner, Hugh W. HW in from the get-go! I remember Lonnie Smith was identifed in reports that he is the son of an ECS jailer.

Next witness is Terri Poff, Pat's adoptive mother. She is testifying about the van she bought.

And she testified about how much $ she gave him to pay living expenses, which he didn't want his wife to know about.

Leonard Patrick Gonzalez Jr. was broke.

That's why he hatched a plan to rob a man he believed held millions of dollars inside his Beulah home.

“He was married, had six children and he had no money,” State Attorney Bill Eddins said. “He was so broke that his mother had to buy him a car, which happened to be a big, red van.”

This came as part of Eddins’40-minute opening statement in the first trial in the July 9, 2009 murders of Byrd and Melanie Billings.

I missed a lot of it (darn werk), but what I saw was he was testifying that Jr. asked him to help him with this, he escorted Jr. out of his house. And, Jr. called him numerous times that day, which he didn't answer.

What's the synopsis of the Eisa testimony?...I missed it.

Patrick came over to his house one morning and asked him to be the getaway driver for a robbery that would net $130 million. Eisa said Patrick seemed to be on drugs at the time. Eisa said no and made Patrick leave the house. Later Pat drove him to the 3D body shop because Eisa wanted to get his car painted (Pat drove because Eisa's license was suspended), Eisa hadn't been to 3D before. Eisa stayed outside while Pat went in. Eisa saw the black guys at the body shop and saw somebody (I'm not sure who) take a duffel bag from behind and SUV into the body shop (I think that's what he said).

Please continue to post updates from the testimony. I'm at my job and the internet filter is blocking all live feeds so I can not watch. Thanks so much. This means alot to me.

So Pat was throwing out crazy amounts of money he could get from the robbery, millions to over a hundred million dollars and telling people Byrd was a drug dealer trying to convince people to help him. Even some of his criminal buddies wanted nothing to do with it so he had to find people dumb enough to believe his claims and think he could actually lead the robbery, even though he was probably using meth or cocaine (my guess on the drugs). The obvious question now is whether anger at Byrd for not funding his school is involved and obviously whether there was somebody else behind it (CT?) who had a grudge against Byrd. I don't understand why Pam Wiggins was involved, but maybe she believed the robbery could get millions too.

Thank you. I won't be home until shortly after 3. I appreciate being able to read some of it that I am missing.
