Three abandoned children found with skeletal remains of young boy in Texas

The discovery was made at an apartment complex west of downtown Houston on Sunday, and has been described as “heartbreaking” by police who added the children had been living in “deplorable” conditions.

Authorities said the youngsters were aged seven, 10 and 15. According to reports, the eldest child said the boy, thought to be nine-years-old, had been dead for a year and was in the next room.

A neighbor of the abandoned children told ABC 13 in Houston that she had complained for months about a horrible smell coming from their apartment. The woman, who has chosen to remain unidentified, told the outlet that the odor was sometimes so bad that she would turn off her air conditioner to halt the smell from coming in. She says she complained numerous times about the odor to the front office but nothing was done.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — The mother of three children found abandoned in a Houston-area apartment has been arrested and her boyfriend has been charged with murder in the death of a fourth child, according to Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.

The 8-year-old victim, whose skeletal remains were found in an apartment with his three brothers, was ruled a homicide with blunt force injuries, the medical examiner's office said Tuesday.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez (D) said during a news conference Sunday evening “…they also found remains that could be a minor’s and that appeared to have been abandoned there, also “for an extended period of time,” Gonzalez said.

“And I emphasize extended.”

“They were in there while the body was deteriorating,”
said Gonzalez, who was visibly disturbed. In his career, he said, he had “never seen a scenario like this” with such “horrific circumstances.” Other members of the sheriff’s office were also “very troubled by this,” he said.

Gonzalez added that the siblings apparently “were fending for each other” and that the 15-year-old was taking care of the younger children.

Mother, boyfriend charged in Harris County child abandonment case

A woman, Linda Smith, learned, along with the rest of Houston, that authorities rescued the three children. She had no idea until Tuesday that her 7-year-old grandson was among them.

Her voice hushed with worry as she asked about another child. His name was not among the three now in Child Protective Services custody.

Smith last saw the children in 2016 when she forced Williams out of her south Houston home after a dispute. The mother took the boys with her.

“I feel like I failed them,” Smith said.

She saw the occasional photo of them on Facebook. Williams messaged her in September about a sick relative and appeared then to be overwhelmed, Smith continued. She assumes the kids were a handful.

"It’s trauma that’s hard to heal from, living with a dead brother for over a year," said Dr. Bob Sanborn with the non-profit Children at Risk.

"These kids are going to be traumatized and it’s going to take a lot of mental health help, for a long time to get these kids back to where we would want any child to be," said Sanborn.

"In Texas, the first line of defense has always been teachers after our parents and family," said Sanborn. "These kids fell through the cracks in terms of identifying the problem," said Dr. Sanborn.

The teen reportedly found his brother dead inside the bedroom a week before Thanksgiving in 2020. The sheriff's office said the 8-year-old died from multiple blunt force trauma injuries.

In court, officials said the 10-year-old boy was in the room when Coulter allegedly beat his younger sibling to death, kicking and punching the child in the back and lower region. He then witnessed Coulter place a blue blanket over the now-deceased child, the court said.

Williams claims she confronted Coulter during the assault. She told investigators she didn't report her son's death because her boyfriend told her not to, according to court documents. It's believed Coulter and Williams moved out of the apartment shortly after that.

Deputies with the Harris County Sheriffs Office say two of the boys may be special needs. Family members say they believe the children have four fathers, two of which are believed to be dead and two are incarcerated.

Brian Coulter, charged with the 8-year-old boy's murder, did not appear in court Wednesday morning when a judge read his charges. He is being evaluated at a mental health unit.

The judge set the 31-year-old's bond at $1 million. The judge also ordered he have no contact with any minors, specifically the minor witnesses in the case, and no contact with the boys' mother, Gloria Williams.

Williams, 35, is charged with injury to a child by omission and tampering with evidence, a human corpse.

A judge set Williams' bond at $900,000: $350,000 for injury to a child, $300,000 for tampering with evidence and $250,000 for injury by omission.

Like Coulter, Williams is ordered to have no contact with her children, or any other minors, and no contact with Coulter.

A DISGRACEFUL couple flaunted their Valentine's Day jewelry gifts on Instagram just three months after the boyfriend allegedly beat the woman's son, 8, to death and left three other kids to starve.

Brian Coulter, 30, allegedly punched and kicked Kendrick Lee to death in November 2020 and was charged with murder, according to court documents obtained by the US Sun.

Lee's mother - Gloria Williams, 35 - allegedly covered up the murder by hiding the young boy's body in the closet, where his skeletal remains were found this week after her 15-year-old called police, Harris County Sheriff's Office told the US Sun on Tuesday.

Williams was arrested and charged with injury to a child by omission and tampering with evidence (hiding a human corpse), according to the criminal complaint obtained by the US Sun.

After the alleged murder, couple abandoned Williams' three other children in the Harris County, Texas home to "fend for themselves," police said.

Meanwhile, the couple went about their lives like nothing was wrong.

On each of their Instagram accounts, they showed off their Valentine's Day gifts, which included nearly dozen items of Zales jewellery.

Williams wrote in the caption, "My husband bought this for me for valentines day i love him very much everything is real."

Coulter is seen in an Instagram video flashing a large, silver pinky ring that reads "CEO" and a thick silver chain with a silver cross pendant.

The Instagram video caption reads, "have valentines his (sic) wat i got and a diamond bracelet we have been through the mud and bacc (sic) real talk we made it and we blessed."

"Gentleman, treat your ladies right if they deserve it," he said in the video.
