UK- London Nine injured in suspected acid attack, children among injured 01/31/24

'Dignified burial'

Ezedi's funeral was conducted by a mosque in west London, and he was given a Muslim burial at a cemetery in east London on 11 March, the BBC has learned.

He is not thought to have been known to the mosque which buried him.

"As a funeral directors, we don't look into people's past, we look at how we can help in a situation," said the Muslim funeral director, who did not want to be named because of sensitivities surrounding the case.

"Our job was just to provide a dignified burial for the deceased."
Those that run the mosque, at which a lot of worshippers have an Afghan background, say Ezedi had never been there.

The mosque often asks for donations to help with the funerals of those who died without known relatives, and frequently conducts funerals and burials for asylum seekers who die alone.

But when it asked for donations in this case, some from the community were upset.

One mosque-goer, who did not want to be identified, said Ezedi had "attacked innocent people" and as he had converted to Christianity, it was the "responsibility of the church to bury him according to his new belief or religion, not the mosque".

Donations for his funeral?
Didn't he have a family living in the UK?
A brother?

Clapham chemical attack suspect was granted asylum despite concerns over honesty

[…]

The Clapham chemical attack suspect, Abdul Ezedi, was granted asylum by a judge who accepted he was a Christian convert despite concerns about his honesty, court documents have revealed.

Previously confidential documents disclosed on Tuesday showed how Ezedi, who police believe attacked a mother and her daughters with a strong alkaline substance on 31 January, had been allowed to stay in the UK despite a sexual assault and exposure conviction.

The papers set out how the Afghan national successfully proved his religious conversion from Islam. They also showed those who supported him during the process were aware of his crimes, and that he had to be in effect escorted during church services as a result.

Ezedi’s body was pulled from the River Thames last month. His conversion to Christianity and the role that played in his asylum claim raised questions of the role faith leaders play in conversions and asylum applications.

That's absolutely shocking. Not even a personalised letter of support, just a "insert name here" template.

The church cannot be trusted to be 'safeguarders' considering their own issues....

Why was he buried as a muslim if he was apparently a Christian? Who organised that exactly?
I suspect if family didn't direct it, then it was the people who put up their hand and said, we'll take care of it.

Doesn't sound like the local Baptists were keen to claim him alive, let alone afterwards.

I respect the funeral director for taking on the responsibility of laying him to rest. Everyone deserves respectful treatment after life, and the Muslim funeral director was the one who stepped up, despite the horrendous actions of this individual.

MOO

JMO but a body is a body and appropriate handling is imperative. Burial is important to close the book on the individual's life, no matter who they are. What lack of respect would be helpful to carry out on this man's corpse?

Well I disagree about everyone deserving respectful treatment. Some people's actions in life are unforgivable and this guy's were. JMO. Good riddance.
Serious question - what's the alternative? I'm being absolutely genuine, if someone doesn't deserve respectful treatment in death because of what they did in life then I can't figure out what that treatment would look like.

Paupers funeral I guess. Council just cremates the body with no pomp & circumstance, and then disposes of the ashes.

I think that what people are getting at is that there is no reason for anyone to go out of their way to treat the bodies of people like this with any great degree of respect, as opposed to actively treating them disrespectfully. There is a difference. I mean, no one - I don't think - is suggesting that we should be gibbeting these people's remains at the gates of the city walls as used to be done, for instance.

Personally, I agree that people who do these sorts of things don't deserve much respect on death. When we had the death penalty it was usual that the executed were buried in unmarked graves within the grounds of the prison rather than being afforded the "respect" of a public or religious funeral and burial.

The man we are discussing here seems to have spent large parts of his life treating everyone else with utter disrespect; he committed sexual assault on more than one occasion; he threw a caustic solution into the faces of three innocent people because one of them ended a relationship with him; he chose to take his own life rather than face the consequences. Disrespect from start to finish. And, lets not forget that he did all this while in the country he fled to (although I don't believe him) for asylum. A country that treated him with so much respect that it didn't deport him for his crimes when they should have done.

I'd have had the body cremated and chucked the ashes in a skip.

Sex offender Ezedi, 35, who was granted asylum after converting to Christianity, was buried in an Islamic ceremony at an east London cemetery this month with a handful of people present. Now The Mail on Sunday can reveal the Muslim Burial Fund (MBF), which organised and conducted the burial, raised more than £6,000 to lay Ezedi to rest – under the name 'Abdul Wahed'. Their cash appeal brushed over his conviction for a 2018 sex assault, plus the horrific events that led to his death.

Disgusting. That charity should be investigated.
