UK - Robyn Mercer, 50, murdered, Surrey, 14 March 2016

How do the police know that Robyn went out to the bins at 9pm ?

We are told that daughter and friend went out after dinner. Surely this was before Robyn went to the bin ? otherwise they would have gone to see where she was, after a minute or two, when she didnt come back to the house.

Maybe she was found by the bins with the bag of rubbish.

On Sunday night Miss Mercer had cooked dinner there for her daughter and a friend, who both later went out.
Her body was found in her front garden the next morning.

When her daughter arrived home officers prevented her from going inside.

DCI Rymarz said that Ms Mercer had gone outside to put something in her bins at around 9pm on the Sunday after having a family meal.

She must have been seen by a neighbour or maybe the girls left the house as she was putting something in the bin, ie she may have been waving the girls off at the same time as taking the "rubbish" out.

We don’t have a time of death yet other than between 9pm (when she was last seen alive) and 8 am the following day unless I have missed it somewhere. It could have been later that evening. She may have gone back inside and later answered the door to the killers or gone to her car for something and was then attacked. According to the Crimewatch report she was found by the gate to the back of the house.

This is a link to the Crimewatch appeal for anyone who hasn't seen it. Yes she was found by the back gate and the bins appear to be further back which seems to suggest she was trying to flee. :-(

There is so much poor reporting on this murder it is difficult to determine what happened. So far we have had the body found on the front lawn, the body found in the drive, the body found by the gate to the back garden. Could have been murdered between 9pm that night and 8 am the following day. Also, the first report I read suggested it was her daughter and a friend who were at the dinner party now it seems it was her children and Robyn having dinner together. Her son, Peter, is 21 and her daughter, Georgia, is 18. Georgia was stopped re-entering the house on her return. Do they live at home? Was the ex boyfriend in the house at the time? The police have said they picked him up within 2 minutes of the murder being reported. There are several cars on the drive/'front garden' in the Crimewatch video. Surely nothing had been moved - so who owned the cars? All will be revealed later in the year, no doubt.

I am not too sure what bail cancelled means in the report. Variously, I have read it can mean the suspects have been too long on bail, that they are no longer under suspicion or that they have been arrested and remanded. I don't think the last of the three options is likely or we would have heard. Is there any way we can determine which of the other two options is correct?

I'm not clear what that means - bail cancelled so taken into custody, or bail cancelled + released wihout charge?

Anyone think it is the following four who have had their bail cancelled? They were rebailed until 16th December and I assume have been rebailed since but I cannot find any report on this. There is an article (linked below) that discusses bail and the intention to reduce the length of it. One probably has to assume that they are no longer of interest in this case.

• A 26-year-old man from West Molesey arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to burgle and murder and on conspiracy to pervert the course of justice has been re-bailed to 16 December.

• A 26-year-old man from West Molesey arrested on suspicion to burgle and murder has been re-bailed to 16 December.

• A 45-year-old woman from Oxshott arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice has been re-bailed until 16 December.

• A 20-year-old woman from Oxshott arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice has been re-bailed until 16 December.

I'm going with the latter, released without charge, because there is no report of anyone having been charged.

It must be, as ther ewere no reports of anyone else being arrested.

I think 6 people altogether have been arrested and 5 bailed. One of them has been rearrested and remanded (the ex boyfriend). We are nearly a year into the police investigation and it doesn't look very promising for a quick resolution :(. I wouldn't be surprised if the ex has something to do with it but after arresting him for R's murder he was not charged with murder. He has been remanded for a long time but would he be on remand for so long if he had only committed fraud? Are the police playing a long game?

We know rigor mortis had started which would indicate she was probably killed 3-4 hours after she was last seen (9pm) although it can start earlier. Following the normal pattern it would indicate she was likely murdered between 12 midnight and 1am.

A Kent woman has been arrested as part of the ongoing investigation into the death of Robyn Mercer in West Molesey.

On Monday morning, a 24-year-old woman from Kent was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. She was later released on bail until January 12 2017.

so what's happened with this person ? has she also been released from bail ?

just realised that tomorrow is one year from the date of Robyn's murder. A long time for no breakthrough.

A bit more on rigor mortis. If the weather is cold it will take longer for RM to set in.

According to Wunderground the temperature in Molesey on the night of 13th March 2016 was between 3C and 4C with a wind chill of 1’ish at times. Not freezing.. Her body at 8am on 14th March (or thereabouts) was beginning to show signs of RM. RM does not define absolutely the time of death as other parameters come into play such as ambient temperature, lividity, and more.

There was a waxing crescent moon with 26 per cent moonlight BUT it was a morning moon, so it would have been very dark at night (apart from any street lighting).

I am unsure why the police seem to be suggesting she was killed around 9pm when she was seen emptying something into the bins. That seems far too early.

She was bailed but I don't know if she has been released from it. There were 5 on bail, four of whom we know have been released.

I've only been able to find a quote from a neighbour about the stage of rigor mortis, nothing official. I wouldn't take that as factual.

If they found something in the pond or lake, I'm assuming it was related to the crime, and I don't know why there isn't far more cctv footage available to assist the police.

Could be that the murder occurred in March and the search of the pond was in October, but I would have expected the police to gather all the local cctv evidence leading away in every direction from the scene immediately after a murder.

Detectives renew appeal for information about the murder of West Molesey resident

13 Mar, 2017 10:47 News
Detectives are renewing an appeal for information from the public as part of the active investigation into the murder a year ago of West Molesey resident Robyn Mercer. The body of the 50-year-old antiques dealer was discovered outside her home in Walton Road on the morning of 14 March 2016. The mother-of-two died as a result of multiple blows to the head.

This is part of the report I linked to earlier which shows that the police have been busy behind the scenes but seemingly without much luck.

https://www.surrey.police.uk/news/anniversary-appeal-following-murder-in-west-molesey/

Nearly 2,500 documents made up of statements, interviews and officer reports have been produced during in-depth enquiries carried out to date. Twenty search warrants have been executed as part of the investigation, more than 1,800 items have been seized and 155 exhibits have so far been forensically examined.
Detectives have followed up on nearly 1,000 taskings and hundreds of lines of enquiry; neighbourhood specialist officers have made 6,400 house to house calls with 13,000 questionnaires returned and more than 1500 hours of CCTV have been viewed.
