The jury was told that Sadie suffered at least 40 knife injuries and Miss Williams ‘left her victim in a pool of blood in the hallway’.
Mr McDermott said the defendant then closed the door, walked back to her car and travelled back to her home in Cheshire.
Mr McDermott said ‘It was a premeditated, planned assassination of an innocent woman. Katsina Walsh helped her every step of the way and was up to her neck in this dreadful crime’.

Mr McDermott said Sadie was a decent, innocent woman who died in ‘an orgy of violence’
The jury was told that Sarah Williams was ‘obsessed’ with the victims partner Ian Johnston. They had a relationship in the past, Sarah Williams ‘wanted that relationship back and set her mind to it’

Mr McDermott said the ‘obstacle was Sadie Hartley’ and in the ‘obsessive and jealous mind of Sarah Williams, Sadie Hartley had to go’.
He told the jury that the ‘evidence is utterly convincing that she and her friend Katrina Walsh set about her removal ruthlessly and methodically’.

Mr McDermott said ‘A more cold blooded plan you cannot imagine. It is chilling to realise that two women could become such determined killers’.

[h=3]Mr Johnston had ended relationship with Williams[/h]Ian Johnston ended his relationship with Sarah Williams after she became ‘obsessive and difficult’.
He ‘had a new life” with Sadie although he was aware of her ‘persistent interest in him’ and, although was regularly in contact with her by text, he was not persuaded to leave Sadie Hartley for her.

The jury was told that Sarah Williams ‘despised’ her rival and ‘plotted to remove her so she could achieve her dream of life with her ideal man’.
Mr McDermott said it was a ‘delusional hope but one which possessed her completely, and so she recruited Katrina Walsh to the cause’.

http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/local-news/sadie-hartley-murder-trial-live-11567704

[h=3]Walsh 'kept a diary of the plot'[/h]Mr McDermott said Katrina Walsh ‘not only was persuaded to help Sarah Williams to achieve her murderous aim, but keep a diary of the plot as it developed’
He said she ‘lent a very significant hand in planning and carrying out the murder, although we accept she was not present on the night’.

Mr McDermott said: ‘It is now clear from her diaries, a compelling record, that Sarah Williams thought about her crime for a long time’.

[h=3]Sadie was ‘decent, hard working and much loved guiltless woman’[/h]Another diary entry in June 2015 said: ‘We’re also seriously talking of getting rid of her opponent. I agree is probably a good play... She does seem to be a totally evil b**h.’
Mr McDermott told the jury that ‘nothing could be further from the truth’ and Sadie was a ‘decent, hard working and much loved guiltless woman’.

However he said ‘in the skewed minds of these defendants she had become the enemy and had to go’.

Sadie Hartley, who was murdered

[h=3]A ‘gathering of momentum for the murder’[/h]Mr McDermott said in August 2015 there was a ‘sinister development’ and a ‘gathering of momentum for the murder’.
He said Sarah Williams tried to recruit Katrina Walsh’s ex husband Kevin ‘to the cause’ who lived in Catterick.

Williams bought a mobile phone with a ‘burner’ SIM card.

[h=3]'Wow. Am unexpectedly excited by it!'[/h]Another diary entry from Katrina Walsh said ‘Wow, I may get to be instrumental in helping remove the awful woman! This may happen! Wow. Am unexpectedly excited by it! Was so buzzing so much I needed a Southern Comfort to wind down a bit’.

[h=3]Burner phone was bought[/h]Three days later the burner phone was bought and came into action.
Mr McDermott said this number text Kevin Walsh and is ‘quite clear’ she wants to discuss something and ‘discuss his skill set’.

[h=3][/h]
[h=3]'Plan B will be needed’[/h]Another diary entry said ‘A lot of texts from Sarah. key not going for the idea of being a hit man after all, scuppered that idea. Plan B will be needed’

[h=3]'Walsh slept like a baby knowing she was going to embark on murder'[/h]Katrina Walsh said she ‘slept like a baby’ knowing she was going to embark on murder.
Mr McDermott said she had no moral qualms, she just didn’t want to get caught.

[h=3]‘Maybe make an ISIS flag to mislead the investigation’[/h]Mr McDermott said another plan developed in September 2015 referred to in her diary was ‘thoughts of a hit on a motor cycle’.
Katrina said she would have to train Sarah to ride a bike and ‘maybe make an ISIS flag to mislead the investigation’

In October a ‘charmless entry’ said they were discussing plans to ‘off the ****’ and they were going off to Germany.
Mr McDermott said they planned the murder for months and enacted it with ‘brutal determination’ and as the ‘assassination drew nearer, the action became more intense and more cunning’.

[h=3]'The stuff of spy novels’[/h]Mr McDermott said in August 2015 neither defendant knew where Sadie and Mr Johnston lived.
He said if the murder was to take place at her home then they had to find the address.
He said with ‘considerable cunning and determination’ they bought a magnetic tracking device and then a second because the first fell off.

The jury was told that they followed Ian Johnston’s car and discovered where he lived with Sadie Hartley in Sunnybank Road in Helmshore, Rossendale.
Mr McDermott said Sarah Williams then undertook a number of reconnaissance missions to scout out the area.
On one occasion they bought flowers from a local Tesco and delivered them to Sadie Hartley.

Mr McDermott described it ‘as the stuff of spy novels’.

Why are they even denying it?

Good police work, from a crime that seemingly wasn't witnessed.

Prosecution: Walsh played a ‘very important part in the whole conspiracy’

Mr McDermott said Katrina Walsh wasn’t there on the night but played a ‘very important part in the whole conspiracy’ and ‘not once did she think of backing out’.
He told the jury it was Walsh who cleared up after the murder and disposed of the evidence.
However ‘unfortunately’ the murder kit was found after Katrina’s arrest.

‘Don’t forget to crack on with your shopping.... Suddenly it’s time’

Mr McDermott said Walsh bought a car using cash and a mobile phone that they thought couldn’t be traced.
He told the jury she also bought clothing for the job that could be disposed of after the murder.
A text from Williams to Walsh on January 4, 2016 said ‘don’t forget to crack on with your shopping.... Suddenly it’s time’

The jury was told the next day (January 5) CCTV footage from Tesco saw her buying a knife and she used her club card.
A receipt from Tesco also matched the knife found buried at Collinge Farm?

[h=3]Ordered GPS tracker on credit card[/h]In another diary entry from Katrina Walsh in October she said ‘Just buzzing too much over the end of (TV show) Hunted and all the planning. Sarah has ordered a GPS tracker on my credit card to be delivered here and will give me cash for it. That’s fine as I’m not going to be involved at the sharp end’.

[h=3]Prosecution: Williams was the ‘driving force and had the motive’[/h]Mr McDermott said Williams was the ‘driving force and had the motive’ and that ‘the reality was that nobody was going to wield the knife but Sarah Williams’.
He said Walsh was at Sarah Williams home waiting for the call to say ‘mission accomplished’ and to collect her on a pre-arranged dumping ground.

[h=3]Walsh 'thought it was all a game of Hunted’[/h]Mr McDermott said Hunted is a Channel 4 series involving a challenge to teams to evade detection from military style trackers.
He said Walsh was to explain her actions to police by saying she did all these things but that she thought it was all a game of ‘Hunted’
Mr McDermott told the jury ‘She really isn’t that stupid.’

[h=3]Jury hears defendants bought stun gun from Germany[/h]The jury heard how both defendants drove to Hull on December 9 and boarded a ferry to Rotterdam and went to a town in Germany called Darmstadt where they bought a stun gun.
Mr McDermott said one of the barbs or prongs from the stun gun remained in Sadie’s collar after her death and matched the one buried by Walsh and recovered by police.
In another diary entry Walsh said ‘So will get a trip to Germany out of this. Took ages to wind down after all the excitement of plotting the perfect murder.’

The two accused - Williams (in sunglasses) and Walsh

From a news article written in January -

..her children Charlotte, 22, and Harry, 23, paid tribute to their mother.

Her children said in a statement: 'We are utterly devastated and cannot begin to understand why mum should be taken so cruelly from us. The whole family is numb. She was the best mum we could have.
'She cared so much for our welfare and was a massive inspiration to us all. She was so excited about Charlotte's engagement just a week ago.'
Mrs Hartley's partner of 10 years, Ian Johnston, 54, earlier told of how the family had lost a 'wonderful mother, partner and friend'.
