Charlottesville police ask property owners to search for signs of U-Va. student

Longo said in an interview Thursday that he wants anyone who knows Jesse L. “LJ” Matthew Jr., 32, who is charged with abducting Graham, to help identify spots that Matthew frequented. Police asked for help finding *places where Matthew likes to fish, for example. A reward of $100,000 is being offered for information leading to the safe return of the 18-year-old U-Va. sophomore from Fairfax County.

With Jesse Matthew in custody, challenges remain in search for Hannah Graham
By The Associated Press

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - Now that they have captured the man charged with abducting a missing University of Virginia student, police face two other major challenges: making the charge stick and, most important, finding Hannah Graham.

[...]

"I can't lose hope until I have to, until I need to," Longo said. "I have hope, I think Hannah's mom and dad have hope. We all know, though, how as each day goes by that hope will diminish."

The search for the sophomore from northern Virginia has expanded to rural areas outside the college town of 40,000, Longo said. The Department of Emergency Management, which is coordinating searches by up to six two-person teams every day, estimates the crews have spent 44 hours in the field since a massive search involving more than 1,000 volunteers last weekend.

Authorities are offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to the safe return of Graham.

Her parents attended a candlelight vigil Thursday night organized by University of Virginia students. The couple said it was "extremely moving."

"We were comforted by the evident high esteem in which our cherished daughter is held by her many friends at the University of Virginia and beyond," John and Sue Graham said in a statement. "We continue to be optimistic that Hannah will soon be returned safely to us."

The restaurant where missing University of Virginia student Hannah Graham and Jesse Matthew allegedly went shortly before she disappeared could face legal trouble if it is confirmed that she drank there.

Surveillance footage from neighboring restaurants and witness testimony places 18-year-old Graham and 32-year-old Matthew in Tempo Restaurant in Charlottesville, Virginia, shortly after 1 a.m. on Sept. 13, according to police. But the owner said that none of the staff saw her inside.

Hannah Graham search chief: 'Just don't give up'
Posted: Monday, September 29, 2014 6:41 am

“Our teams are dedicated and focused,” said Mark Eggeman, search and rescue coordinator for the Virginia Department of Emergency Management. “Fatigue may begin to set in, but we’ll bring in reinforcements.”

About 50 people working under Eggeman’s direction combed swaths of Albemarle along U.S. 29 south of Charlottesville from 8 a.m. until dark Sunday.
Pairs of dogs and their handlers beat trails through thick underbrush as searchers on all-terrain vehicles pushed farther onto bucolic properties and through wooded areas and slopes at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Authorities clung to hope as the chances of finding the University of Virginia second-year student alive waned.
“Don’t give up,” Eggeman said. “That’s the biggest lesson here. Just don’t give up.”

Police would not say what forensic evidence they have connecting Matthew to Graham’s case or to the Harrington investigation.

Charlottesville Police Chief Timothy J. Longo said that “it would be inappropriate for me to comment” on the new information.
