So I gather this person in Vegas was someone she came to know after being jailed (and not someone from her past)? What kind of evidence could he have withheld? Very curious about what in the calls made Nurmi think it could be important to the case (the missing weapons possibly buried in Nevada?).

Re the last quote, me thinkith he dothith...you know.

The Vegas trip came about after KN listened to some of JA's jail cell phone calls. He was concerned she was hiding evidence from him. He was certain she cared more about her image than her case and so he thought if she was hiding information it was probably because it was too embarrassing but his job isn't to conceal her embarrassment but rather to keep her off death row. This witness is described as a JA "fan" who was "simply talking to a girl in jail that he thought was attractive. . . . This was no longer just some bizarre sexual fantasy that existed only in his head."

There is no discussion of what he thought she was hiding, or what he found in LV. Typical of this book it is all about the process and not the results.

I am not sure of the connection between the "Bob White" "letters" and the trip to LV. They are in different parts of the book. I don't get the sense that LV guy was "Bob White." I think someone was asking about that last night.

I LOVE that part of the country. Just nothing, bah. ;)

The colors alone! The surreal landscapes! And the remoteness is what I like most of all, steep curves, dirt roads, straight down the mountainside views and all.

But yah, I see your point about the killer being an interstate kinda gal. Maybe the truckstops along the way helped fuel her trip..:D

I love that country, too. I could look and look and look and never get enough. But I don't think "remote" all by herself is Jodi's thing: hard to be a narcissist in a land of nothing.

I was, anyway. It wasn't clear from the excerpts; LV followed directly after Bob White. (not a criticism... I'm extremely grateful to you book readers for taking the time to post excerpts. I know how time consuming it is).

I wonder what Bob White turned over ? And I sure do wonder what the heck Nurmi overheard on her calls that warranted he and Wilmott and an investigator going to LV to speak with whomever.

Nurmi style, he hints it was one of the killer's truly dirty little secrets. I'm thinking his book is so long because he's intent on revealing everything humiliating about her he discovered along the way.

Pretty unsubtle to state that " crazy as it sounds" she cared more about her reputation than facing prison or death, and then to carry on decimating her.

Another great line. :)

How true. All that useless sand and dirt and spiky nettle bushy thingies, no one to admire her goddessness, and worst of all, having only the little mirrors of her makeup compacts (even if 30 lbs worth) to gaze upon her own reflection.

Bwahahaha!:desert:

I wonder if Jodi knows what Nurmi is writing about her? This is hilARIAS.
I have a prediction...

Jodi will try to use her war chest to sue Nurmi. "Spend money now, make **millions**" is what she thinks.

Presuming auntie Sue has the key to the bank vault, I don't see it actually happening. Of course, I don't see that money going to an appellate lawyer either...

I think Jodi's intimidated by emptiness. She feels she's brilliant about manipulating people: it's her raison d'être. But she can't tolerate nothing. When TA didn't return her texts, she must have been seething, since she'd be left in a world of nothingness. In a very obscure way, I believe she really was afraid of there being nothing out there and running out of gas on her trip to Mesa and SLC. She normally might have been propelled towards truck stops, but on that trip that was not going to be an option (security cameras everywhere). Same thing with casinos.

I don't believe she pulled over and slept, either. Since she couldn't risk sleeping where there were other people (i.e. cameras), she certainly wasn't going to sleep in nothingness.

I can't even picture her getting out of the car at night in the middle of the desert to bury weapons or even just to pee.* I can't picture her stopping at a remote campground to get "freshened" up (my method): she'd be afraid of the stars all by herself.

I don't recall the timeline for getting to SLC... If there was time for a nap and a shower, IMO she was at someone's pad. She's a person who depends on others to offer these kinds of services.

*Jail was probably the first time she'd ever peed that was not in a restroom/bathroom of some sort. :jail:

Timeline for June 4-5.

Last photo taken at 5:33pm

Killer makes calls beginning at 10;30 pm. First is to Burns.

She calls TA phone 4 times, from 11:00 pm to 11:53 pm.

For the duration of all those calls cell towers locate her between Kingman AZ and the NV border. (Kingman to Hoover Dam near border is about 75 miles).

I think Mesa to Kingman is 210 odd miles, or 3-4 hours driving time; she may have hit rushhour traffic on this leg of trip.

So she is Kingman area within 5 hours after dragging his body to the shower, had to have hit rush hour, and the drive was 210 miles (minimum 3 hours) to get to Kingman.

She cleaned up FAST.

Kingman AZ to West Jordan via the 15 would take her 8 hours to drive, going 65mph. ...about 515 miles.

She arrived in West Jordan to Ryan's house between 10-11am on June 5.

I doubt she slept that night.

Her trip sure slowed down after reaching NV. Midnight to 10am, the earliest arrival time, on 15 in the middle of the night fast driving (70-75 mph speed limit), and it takes her at least 10 hours to drive what she could have easily done in 7-8.

Time in LV? A stop to throw the bloody bundle into Hoover dam?
Never looked at this before, but totalling mileage, if she never went off road to dispose of weapons or what not, just drove straight out, her car would have needed to have a minimum of 300 miles worth of gas in the tank/gas cans to get out of AZ without stopping for gas.

This is what I think, too. The only way Jodi can raise more money for her "fund" is to have a current appeal to "charity". Nurmi's book gives her this opportunity. She's never going to have enough money in that fund for an appeal anyway. Plus, when she's hell bent on revenge, she loses sight of the bigger goal and shoots herself in the foot. I say she goes after Nurmi.

I say Nurmi is deliberately provoking her in this direction. He's flaunting how much c***p he has on her and how willing he is to unravel her in public. Revenge. And, ya know, much as we hate the Nurms, we might relish this little strategy of his....

On her bank statement there's a charge from Shell Oil in Mesquite, NV ($46.11), it posted on 6/09 but posting dates aren't transaction dates, it had to be before that, it's on Rt. 15 not far across the AZ state line - I believe this is what I was thinking of last night (not quite sure why Henderson was in my mind, very sorry for that confusion), now I need to figure out where someone came up with the time of her being there around 3:00/3:30 a.m. or so on the 5th, I have to run some errands but will try to chase this down a bit later. It is about 500 miles from Sparks, NV so those two transactions aren't related.

Hope4More, I have to be honest - I never heard of JA until a few days into her first trial. I knew vaguely about some forged pedo letters but not the nitty gritty behind them. So I apologize if you already know this - this was news to me from the book.

Re: Bob White....

-on a Monday morning in April, 2010 KN goes into his office and sees an email, with 10 PDF attachments, from a Yahoo email account of someone named "Bob White"
-the attachments contain a scanned, handwritten letter from TA stating that he is attracted to the Hughes' son, that it would be easy to act on these feelings, and that he (TA) is sorry he broke JA's finger (no idea if this is all in one letter, or what is contained in each of the 10 attachments)
-KN questions why TA would have written and mailed these letters to JA when all of their communication was electronic and telephonic. KN wonders who "Bob White" is and how "Bob White" came to possess such letters. These questions are not answered in the book
-KN says his trying to figure who Bob White was and why he had the purported letters was "the beginning of the end of the relatively harmonious relationship I had with Ms. Arias." (gee, I wonder why?)
-the defense expert concluded that it was "highly probable" that the letters were written by TA. "Highly probable" is the highest level of authenticity that can be bestowed on something without seeing the original (according, of course, to KN). With this finding of "highly probable" KN decided to turn over to the state as evidence of "Ms. Arias' claims of physical abuse and her claim that Mr. Alexander had a sexual interest in young children." (oh, how lucky for JA - a twofer.)
-later on KN became much more suspect of these letters. Enter the 3x5 card of practice handwriting found in JA's cell. If she wrote them, KN wonders how they got out of the jail. (reading between the lines, this card is found after the defense expert made her conclusion).
-KN says the state could never conclude with absolute certainty that the letters were forged. The state expert said no conclusive analysis could be done because these were copies of the letter and not originals.
-KN tells us what he thought of the letters makes no difference. If his expert says it is "highly probable" that TA wrote them, then that is what he has to go with.

As far as I can tell, KN does not know who "Bob White" actually is. Any guesses? Matt? Donovan? MDLR (or does this predate her)? KN says these letters are posted "all over the internet." FWIW.

It's about a 2 hour drive from Hoover Dam to Mesquite. The 3-3:30am timeline is in keeping with being near the dam at midnight. Doesn't leave much (if any) time for an excursion into LV though.

She needed to dispose of weapons etc. before daybreak. Really thinking they're at the bottim of the Hoover Dam.

He said that's what he "had" to go with for trial? Or for now, saying he believes now that TA wrote them??

Bob White. What a dweeb am I. I thought that was a real person. It had to be Matt, IMO.

As to your first question, I think it is a little of both. I think he knows the letters are forged but I think he thinks TA is a pedo. Elsewhere in the book he says it isn't a stretch, given what we know of TA's background, to say maybe he was SA as a child and thus is a predator now.

I have to run a million errands now for my 6 am flight up to the inlaws tomorrow where we spend a glorious, fun-filled week (not) so I will try my best to answer any questions about the book but I may not be here often.

ETA: that wasn't clear, sorry. I think he knows the letters are forged but believes the content contained therein to be perhaps true.

Great find. It should have the date and time of the transaction in the detail level, though, no? But, for some reason we can't get the detail?

Mesquite to WJ is approximately 4 hours 36 minutes. (per Apple Maps, which I'm loving for all these inquiries).

Another thought...are we having to adjust by one hour because of time zone differences between AZ and other Mountain time states?
