BONES FOUND BURIED TWO FEET DEEP IN MH17 CRASH SITE

The Royal Malaysian Police Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) commander for the MH17 tragedy, said the victims' bones were found buried in the ground when the recovery team made its final mission in April this year.

Hussein said during the final mission, the recovery team had to dig the crash site area as some of the bones were found to be buried in the soil.

"Archaeology forensics was used in the search this time. It was surprising to find bones 40cm and two-feet deep in the ground," he said.

Hussein said after the final mission, the recovery team believed the last two victims were identified and 99 percent of the recovery operation was completed.

"Now grass has grown on the crash site and it is unlikely the recovery team will go there again unless there is any necessity," he added.

A flight with recently found mortal remains of the victims of the disaster with the MH17 has arrived tonight at Schiphol Amsterdam Airport. Around seven o'clock in the evening the aircraft landed, a regular scheduled flight this time. After the landing a brief ceremony was held. The relatives of the last two unidentified victims were invited for the ceremony.

The mission to search for human remains had long been terminated when last week it was suddenly announced that new remains were found. The remains were collected and secured by the mayors of the surrounding villages. This was agreed at the completion of the repatriation mission. Also once again, debris of the plane has been found. The pieces of debris were flown to the Netherlands too. They will be transferred to the Safety Board and the Public Prosecutor.

"PASSENGERS MH17 LOST CONSCIOUSNESS RAPIDLY"

NOS
http://nos.nl/artikel/2062802-inzittenden-mh17-snel-buiten-bewustzijn.htmL

Passengers of flight MH17 became unconscious a few seconds after a Buk missile hit the aircraft last year . According to relatives this is one of the conclusions of the Dutch Safety Board (OVV). Some 600 survivors attended a meeting this morning at the World Forum in The Hague where OVV-chairman Tjibbe Joustra updated them on the four reports on flight MH17.

Surviving families say that it is established according to the investigators that the cockpit was hit by a Buk missile, with thousands of fragments. "This has caused the cockpit to break open due to the enormous pressure," says one of them to Dutch broadcaster NOS. "The passengers had hardly any chance to become aware of this," he says, visibly moved. Another survivor said that passengers may have noticed something for "a few seconds" at the most.

The report would mention that Ukraine should have closed the airspace as a precaution. Because the relatives have received a lot of information, an information center will be established for further questions, Joustra says. Afterwards hew also said that he is surprised that the Russians have already responded to the report before any conclusions were announced.

Shortly after 11.30 am, the first survivors left the meeting. Joustra had requested not to share information with the press until 13:00. Around that time, he will present the main conclusions to the public.

Flight MH17 was downed on July 17 last year in eastern Ukraine. The Boeing 777 was en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and had 298 people on board. Among them were 196 Dutch.

The Dutch Safety Board has received many comments. Some of these they have used to inprove the report, others they did not. Please take a look at the appendix of the reports.

Bellingcat's comments on Russia sum it up nicely: Quantum of Obfuscation
https://www.bellingcat.com/news/uk-and-europe/2015/10/16/quantum-of-obfuscation/

Despite Russia’s complaints of isolation from the progress of the investigation, it participated in all three interim-progress meetings held by the DSB and provided a total of 74 written comments in the consultation process between the draft and the final report. Nineteen of these comments resulted in amendments of the report’s text, with varying degrees of significance. This puts the Russian Federation at the top of the “amendment contributors” list, both in absolute number of inputs and as success ratio.

Editorial New York Times
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/15/opinion/russias-fictions-on-malaysia-flight-17.html

Against Russia’s shameless deception, the Dutch, who lost the largest number of people in the tragedy, must be commended for the thoroughness and integrity of their investigation. The criminal investigation should be as clear and independent, no matter how hard the Kremlin tries to derail or mislead it.

DUTCH PUBLIC PROSECUTOR: THIS SUMMER PROOF ABOUT MISSILE THAT DOWNED MH17

RTL Nieuws
http://www.rtlnieuws.nl/nieuws/binnenland/om-zomer-bewijs-over-raket-mh17

The Public Prosecutor (OM) expects to round up this summer the criminal evidence about what kind of Buk missile was used in the downing of MH17, and the exact spot from where the missile was fired. Chief Prosecutor Fred Westerbeke wrote this in a letter to relatives, according to sources who confirmed this to RTL Nieuws.

After all the turmoil about the lack of radar images, the Public prosecutor has informed the surviving relatives that the international justice team has missile residues in its possession that are under investigation now. 'Before the second half of this year' this investigation must lead to hard evidence about both the type of missile and the the location where it was launched.

Westerbeke says that there is no video or film footage of the launch. Also, there are no satellite images, because of the clouds on the day of the disaster. The prosecution does have radar data indicating whether there was other traffic at the time of the disaster. The letter would further indicate that Ukraine no longer has radar data. The US have made their data available via the secret services MIVD; through a 'situation report' of the OM this can later serve as proof. Russia has not supplied the requested radar data; OM says they are 'in contact about this' with Moscow.

The Prosecution plays down the importance of that radar data, and says there are many more sources to provide evidence: telephone tapping, images and testimonies, and 5 billion Web pages. There is 'a large group of people' in the picture who may be responsible for the attack.

Only when their role is clear, and depending on where they are located, a decision will be taken about the most promising form of criminal prosecution. According to the Public Prosecutor, there are now two options for prosecution: using one of the countries leading the investigation (Netherlands, Australia, Belgium, Malaysia, Ukraine), or by an international tribunal being set up by those countries.

The prosecution warns the surviving families that the investigation and prosecution may take a very long time. Westerbeke refers to the Lockerbie crash, in which it took almost three years before arrest warrants were issued, and another seven years before suspects were extradited.

In early March, the surviving relatives will be informed about the developments. The Public Prosecutor will give a further explanation on Friday.

An Australian couple whose three children were killed with their grandfather on this plane have a new baby:

In a statement released Thursday by the Australian foreign affairs department, the couple said they believe Violet is a gift sent by Evie, Mo, Otis and Nick.

"Violet's birth is a testament to our belief that love is stronger than hate," the couple wrote. "We still live with pain, but Violet, and the knowledge that all four kids are with us always, brings light to our darkness. As Martin Luther King said, 'Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.'"

...

Maslin and Norris said they would continue to love all four of their children equally.

"Violet brings some hope and joy for us," the couple wrote. "We hope she brings hope and joy for you too."

MH17 – The Open Source Investigation, Two Years Later

Today Bellingcat releases its latest report, “MH17 – The Open Source Investigation, Two Years Later”, bringing together two years of research by Bellingcat into the fate of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 on July 17, 2014. As part of this release Bellingcat communicated with experts in various fields for their analysis and opinions of MH17 related evidence.

Of particular interest is the work of The James Martin Center for Non-Proliferation Studies at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. The Center used the forensic image analysis software Tungstene to examine various images related to MH17, including photographs of smoke believed to be from the missile launch, images of the Buk missile launcher travelling through separatist territory on July 17, 2014, and satellite images presented by the Russian Defence Ministry on July 21, 2014. These are the significant findings from this analysis:

- Images showing the Buk missile launcher and what is believed to be smoke from the launch of a Buk missile show no signs of digital alteration,
- Satellite imagery presented by the Russian Defence Ministry of July 21, 2014 was “so heavily manipulated that it lacks any credibility as evidence.”
- The quality of the satellite images that Russia released is poor and appear altered. Therefore they recommend Russia should release the originals to the Joint Investigation Team.
