GUILTY UK - Jordan Burling, 18, Died Weighing Less Than 6 Stone, Body Of Baby Also Found, Leeds, June 2016

Oh my god. He looks like an old man. That actually made me shiver when I scrolled down - that doesnt even seem like the same person.

I know, I posted upthread that I'd tried to avoid hearing the details but that photo is going to haunt me.

Based on that (and that alone, I haven't studied this like you guys have) I feel the sentences are much too short.

Those sentencing remarks are a hard read, especially the medical descriptions near the beginning. They're well reasoned and point to the jury getting it right.

But I still feel a bit uneasy with this case.

Women jailed after teen 'rotted to death'

Whatever happened with Abigails comments about (iirc) Jordan playing football and have a McD's the night before? That made me so cross at the time, did she admit in court it was a lie?

I'd forgotten about that - looking back through the thread, she did take it back:

Miss Fairley said that during the first police interview when Abigail Burling had a solicitor present she answered ‘no comment’ to all questions asked with the exception of one.

When asked about what she said about Jordan playing football the night before her death, she told the officers that she can been confused and was referring to her first memory of Jordan and her daughter playing together.

Uk - Jordan Burling, 18, Died Weighing Less Than 6 Stone, Body Of Baby Also Found, Leeds, June 2016 (quote from live coverage, which seems to no longer go that far back).

Not at all convinced I believe the "confused" thing, but I could certainly see panic and distress leading to saying things that aren't true in the first interview, easier to understand when she did actually back down on it. Truth seems a bit of an optional thing in that family anyway, glad her child is well out of it.

And that photo... wow. If it wasn't captioned I'd not even believe it was the same person.

Anyone looking at the Mirrors website be warned, the picture is worse as it is not as cropped, I clicked it to read the article and expected it to be the same picture in the article that Cagney posted. It's really removed any of the sympathy I had for his family (I dont know what I was expecting, but him to have looked like that wasnt it)

Looked it up... yeah. I'm now on the "not long enough" side of the fence, although maybe that will change again if someone makes a compelling enough argument about mental health again... I think there's no one right answer in this case. But it's very hard to understand how anyone can let a supposedly loved one get into such a state without taking action, even as someone who puts off action myself a lot (on more minor things), I just can't understand this extreme. So I'm varying wildly between seeing the side of them having clear mental problems, and just thinking "throw away the key".

I looked at The Mirror - I so wish I hadn't. I've read the 'excuses' from the defence but have to say none of it will wash with me.
This is torture imo and they deserve much harsher sentences for what they did/didn't do.
Where were the rest of the family during all of this? Now they say they have anger, guilt and regret, but it's too late for that, when they were needed they were invisible.
Poor Jordan, noone cared. What a terrible, terrible, situation. AIMO.

This is beyond shocking. Jordan needed someone to help but obviously not one of his extended family had any idea what was going on in his life. You would expect one of his relatives to have been curious about why he was not seen for so long, knowing his immediate family circumstances. Little point in them being shocked and upset now imo

Speaking after the verdict at Leeds Crown Court, James Roger, Safer Leeds Executive chairman, issued a statement on behalf of the Safer Leeds Executive, the Leeds Safeguarding Children Partnership and the Leeds Safeguarding Adults Board.

He said: "Although today's verdict can in no way compensate for the loss of Jordan's life and the tragic neglect and abuse that he suffered in the months leading up to his death, it is right that the individuals responsible for causing this distress and eventual death are brought to justice.

"The details that have been in court in the past few weeks and the suffering caused to Jordan by his mother and grandmother - and allowed to happen by his sister - have made for very difficult hearing. It is right that those responsible for this crime have been held accountable.

"When we became aware of Jordan's shocking death we commissioned a full, independent joint review, which is currently underway to identify and examine any lessons that need to be learned to try and ensure this cannot happen again in the future.

"We will therefore not be able to comment further until the outcome of that review."

A journalist then asked whether there have been 'serious failings from the authority', but Mr Roger did not offer a response.

Authorities to launch review into death of 'emaciated' Leeds teenager

I've been following this case but only thought to search for a thread on here it today. I think this one is going to haunt me forever. Poor Jordan, what a horrible way to live and die. Whilst I agree with the convictions I honestly don't think it was malicious cruelty by the three convicted family members which makes it somehow more depressing to me.

I do feel for his father and other family and think it's unfair to point the finger at them. Some people do just lose touch and hindsight is 20/20. I have a cousin who just doesn't speak with any family members anymore. He could be living in a hoard for all I know. I'm on another continent from him now so it's not like I can pop over and check and even if I did he may not answer the door.

The review should be quite interesting. Abigail would sneak her child over to the house all the time even though it was deemed unsuitable. This means that social services bloody knew the place was a total dive. Why was Jordan not on their radar? How is it possible to leave school at 12 to go and be educated in a hoard and nobody notices? I think education authorities will be slammed for this. I don't want token heads to roll (pointless) but at the very least some serious lessons need to be learnt.

Do we know how old Abigail's child was when Jordan died? If they were older than two at the time then Jordan would have been under 16 living in that hellhole but nothing was done.

The mobile phone evidence showed Abigail was in the house a lot, meaning her child was too. So basically a young child watched and smelled their uncle waste away like that. How utterly horrible. I hope they're young enough to not remember any of this.

Poor Jordan, what a waste of a life.

On the local BBC news this evening there was a professor who specialises in child safety.

He was shocked that there are no mandatory checks on homeschooled children for either education or welfare.

It's the main story here:

Look North (Yorkshire) - Evening News: 12/07/2018

The video is only available till 7pm tomorrow.

It's madness that they're not checked on. I can't imagine there are that many home-schooled children in a city where there are loads of schools, would be interesting to know the stats. Farnley Park where Jordan went is an "outstanding" (per Ofsted) school, I wonder why he left.

First post here after lurking as a guest....I'll dive right in and hopefully I've got the gist of it here!

194 children were known to be home educating in Leeds as of December 2012, 13 of which were directly as a result of bullying. Of course registration is voluntary so that number will be only a small fraction.

Jordan's family were visited twice by the LEA's Elective Home Education team, if I remember correctly from mum's interview, and despite previous SS involvement, visits then seem to have stopped. They weren't invisible homeschoolers.

Welcome, Curious.1! Great bit of fact finding. 194 kids surely isn't too much for the authority to be keeping checks on? And I'd have thought SS might have flagged up for repeat visits at the very least.

Another case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand's doing?

Or the LEA & SS having a problem family that they didn't know what to do with, possibly? I suppose we don't know the extent of SS involvement with the family, but somewhere along the line, they really dropped the ball IMO - keeping in contact with Abigail to make sure she wasn't back with her mum with her child, yet forgetting that Jordan was there, being homeschooled?

I just can't fathom accepting that the family who had attendance problems with Abigail, and sent Jordan in with rotting teeth, lice, and not school-ready (toilet trained), were seen as acceptable "Home Educators" - in quotes as from what the mum said, education did not occur and Jordan was not preparing for GCSE exams or life outside of the home.
