CANADA Canada - University of Calgary professor building database of serial killers — 6,250 and growing

Rbbm. It will be interesting to see what SR comes up with for the Edmonton sk/s.
From link,
"Sasha Reid, a University of Toronto PhD candidate who began teaching in the U of C’s faculty of sociology and psychology in September, has earned national attention for a years-long project compiling an exhaustive list of serial killers, variables that may have motivated their dark pursuits, and a 10,652-strong and growing list of missing persons and unsolved homicides.

Featured in several national media outlets and soon to be featured in an upcoming Netflix documentary on the Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski, Reid said she’s self conscious about the attention, noting her database project — which chronicles some 6,250 serial killers dating back to the 15th century and 645 variables on their behavioural development — would only be possible with the work of dozens of volunteers."

"Reid added she’s also interested — after becoming more settled in her teaching role — in examining the series of unsolved murders thought to be the work of a serial killer operating primarily in the Edmonton area between the late 1980s and the early 2000s."

Looks like interesting work. I'm very curious whether umbilical cords or breach birth are related to making a murderer.

“If you look at the history of profiling ... It’s been more of an art than a science.”
...

“My database goes far beyond this ... “I will ask, ‘... What was going on in the parents’ background prior to conception?” she asks. “Were they in a house with lead-based paint? Was the father an alcoholic? Was mom doing drugs or drinking during the pregnancy? Then we look at the childhood. Were they born with any abnormalities? Were their birthing complications? Maybe an umbilical cord wrapped around their necks? Was it a breached birth?"

Intensive serial killer database garners media buzz

"A psychology professor at the University of Calgary will be featured in a Netflix documentary series on The Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski. Sasha Reid is compiling what could become the most comprehensive serial killer database in the world. She has researched more than 6,000 serial killers, including Bruce McArthur. He was a landscaper, who pleaded guilty to eight counts of first degree murder in Toronto last month. Sasha Reid joined host Doug Dirks on the line."

WS thread: Canada - Bruce McArthur- Pleads Guilty - murders of 8 men, Toronto, 2010-2017 #2

The big question about Bruce McArthur is whether he was responsible for a series of murders of gay men in the 1970s.

Sasha Reid lived in Toronto and called in a tip to report that she believed a serial killer was responsible for the murders over the last decade. That was the general belief in the Toronto community for a number of years. If she is looking for similarity in victims, this strategy may not help as McArthur's recent victims included a few new immigrants in their 40s from the Middle East. McArthur may have changed his victim type and his MO between the 1970s and 2010.
