Suicides decline in Las Vegas, but is it the calm before the storm?

Now, this is interesting, in regards to the discussion about suicides.

I can definitely see that. Gambling addicts with the same or more assets and entitlements they always have, not being able to bet the assets and found money like they otherwise would? I can see how, if you don't have much to lose, and the only place you tend to lose the little you do have is closed -- you might be less inclined to suicide. Plus no "free" drinks.

none there that I know of
not all parks have public restrooms - most don't that I've seen
The article mentioned that they are closed. That's why I mentioned it.

eta: and a quick google of the map of this (apparently enormous) park shows that there are multiple public facilities. I read an article saying it can have 4000 people there on a single day!

Well we could say people are being selfish, rude, inconsiderate, disgusting, dumb and on and on but IMO it all boils down to a percentage of people are not emotionally and/or mentally equipped to deal with this pandemic. I think it could be even worse if we hadn't started opening up. Rebellion, desperation, fear and anger, we don't all know how to express our emotions in a logical manner. Every person on this earth has had their lives changed forever. Some can't cope anymore. We can't leave our home without fearing every person we pass by. Family, friends and strangers - any one of them could unintentionally infect us with this deadly virus. We could unknowingly infect someone we love. We need peace. We need hope. We need to hug and be hugged without fear of possibly killing or being killed. When the world is filled with suffering and death it's only natural to desire our normal routines, something normal to hold on to. Then there are some people who are just plain spoiled and always have to have their way even before this pandemic.

We need a miracle.

I think your hypothesis is correct - in part because it is just broad enough. There are cognitive issues (mentally equipment) and these can be learned, acquired or - genetic. Emotionally equipped is not as well understood. It's visible in actions, but usually, people overwhelmed by their emotional systems are pretty unable to explain.

People on Earth have had their lives changed "forever" many times. What we just did over a longer term with fossil fuels is a late example, but the eruption of Krakatoa caused millions of deaths from agricultural failure.

World War II was pretty major.

And while it's been awhile (God bless the elders who tried so hard to make sure it didn't happen again) since we've had a big catastrophe. Not that this is on the scale of WW2 or any number of other things.

We'll get various options for vaccines/immunity/treatment. The miracle will be if civilization survives all this.

And we do need a miracle.

Thanks for the link! And speaking of camping...

Today I spoke with my friend in the health department here in Jefferson county Washington and she told me Phase 2 was just approved. So some services like hair salons, dentists, etc. will open up. Restaurants will remain curbside only and other non essential businesses will remain closed.

So no camping in the county. However, when Clallam county opens up for camping Jefferson will too. And when Kitsap county opens up then Jefferson will open restaurants. Right now it looks like masks will be required.

The reason for the domino effect for opening up further is that we are in proximity to King county and want to avoid causing an influx of people coming over to camp and go to restaurants.

Jefferson county has a total of 30 cases but the most recent one was from a traveler and that person has been taken home. No one in my town tested positive - most cases were west of us.

I had a periodontist appointment last week after my original appointment was cancelled. The office waiting room is small and after answering questions by the nurse she told me if there were two other people in the waiting room I'd stay in my car until called.

When I got there they took my temp and ask the usual questions again. They also asked me to use the hand sanitizer when I entered. They had a container for "dirty" pens for people who signed credit card payment and the receptionist cleaned my credit card with sanitizer after processing my bill. I used my own pen.

All in all I felt comfortable going to my appointment.

This was so informative and helpful. I kind of think California is moving just a tad too fast (trying not to, but once one county sees that another county can do something - then everyone starts doing it, ready or not).

I like the level of sanitization you describe. Many people will avoid the flu as well - so double bonus. Now we wait - for more data about weather, about latitude, about treatments - and people's behavior.

Right now, in Las Vegas, it is a complete spend fest. People are not losing money in casinos, and they are all getting $600 extra a week, plus their weekly benefit amount.

Folks are eating out, buying new phones, laptops, tvs. Most of these folks live paycheck to paycheck. And this money, for many of them, is more than they make a month.

This is sort of like a lull, before the storm. Many of these folks may never get hired back. Things are going to hit hard in the fall. Even with UI extensions, that extra $600 a week ends July 30th.

Ah.

woah. (As we say in SoCal). Jeez. Yeah, there's going to be a hard landing in this case.

they don't have 'tap' there yet?
that way you're the only one touching your card and you don't sign for anything

I've never used tap. I suppose it exists, but when I ask about it at local stores (grocery stores) they just stare at me like "why are you taking up my time?" I see the logo on the side of the credit machine. I guess I should watch a youtube. Fortunately, I was out of the real world shopping business fairly early on - but surely I'll go back to a store one day. I actually need gas in my car - need to find a brand that guarantees touchless, so that I can learn how to do it.

you literally just tap your card (there's a little gold holagram spot that touches the screen) but they have to be set up for it and your card has to be set up for it too
if they're staring at you, they probably aren't set up for it and the cashiers have no idea
you can also pay with your smart phone

This is a bit off side, but what about the idea of having slow exposure over a long period of time (1-3 seasons), hoping that over time our weak bodies will build resilience to the virus? That's almost what I'm thinking right now.

What if we were exposed first from a distance, then from someone with antibodies, then we locked down, with slow exposure to others who had probably been exposed - like health care professionals first?

I have been away from this discussion for days because I need to wake up each day believing that everything is normal, that I'm just staying home today again. It's too much sometimes to realize that we have a deadly virus circulating the world and government leaders are posturing and pointing at economics.

What a relaunch!

It's pretty much over, imo. There are not going to be any more "measures" put in place. It's going to be open up, fast or slower. jmo

The coronavirus 19 is pretty much over? Everything back to normal?
I bet they thought that in the Summer of 1918. Transmission is reduced during Summer months in the Northern Hemisphere - warmer temperatures, everyone is outside.

Closed spaces allow the virus easy transmission - thus the Sept/Oct 202o wave. Some policy experts are asking the question of 3rd and 4th waves without a vaccine.

How will this change life expectancy?

The only tap system I know of is one of the gas stations. My card should work but I've had no success, probably user error.

Lol, we don't have a Walmart either and the only fast food joints are McDonald's and Subway. Oh, and we have a Starbucks inside of Safeway so we're slowly getting metropolitanized. :D
