9/23/20 Update: Getreu has been hospitalized right before his trial was set to begin in San Mateo County. But little is known about his condition, District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said. Prosecutors & defense attorneys have been informed that he does not have COVID-19. Wagstaffe said that tightened protocols due to COVID-19 have made it difficult for Getreu's attorney to visit him & the attorney did not know yet why his client was hospitalized. Facing difficulty in planning for the trial without much information on Getreu's health, prosecutors plan to speak to hospital staff to learn more. Prosecutors plan to begin having witnesses testify on Oct. 13 if all goes as planned.

Alleged serial killer's trial faces setback after hospitalization

He eluded identification for more than 45 years after allegedly strangling two young women on the Stanford University campus. Now, on the cusp of his first trial, John Arthur Getreu remains hospitalized as doctors suspect he suffered a stroke or brain embolism, throwing his case in San Mateo County into flux.

Getreu's trial in Taylor's case was to begin on Sept. 28 with jury selection, but it was postponed because he was admitted to the hospital, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said at the time. He reportedly underwent surgery, returned to jail and was readmitted into a hospital, Wagstaffe said on Thursday, Oct. He is also set for a trial-setting hearing in Santa Clara County Superior Court on Nov. 4.

Getreu remains in the hospital where he is expected to stay for at least the next week. Doctors are still figuring out his medical situation, which might be a stroke or a brain embolism, Wagstaffe said. The condition is impacting his ability to communicate. A court hearing is scheduled for this Wednesday to update information regarding his medical condition on the record, Wagstaffe said.

Attorneys will meet with the judge for a status conference during the first week of November (4th), but Getreu will probably need to go through rehabilitation for his medical condition, Wagstaffe said. The trial is expected to start in the first week of January if Getreu's health has improved.

Alleged serial killer John Getreu to stand trial after brain aneurysm

Nov. 3, 2020
John Arthur Getreu, the man accused of murdering two young women on Stanford University property in the 1970s, will stand trial after being hospitalized with a brain aneurysm, the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office said on Tuesday.

Getreu's trial was postponed after he was hospitalized with the brain aneurysm, which affected his speech and required him to have physical therapy. On Nov. 2, he appeared in court in San Mateo County from jail by remote video. His defense attorney, John Halley, told the court that his health has improved so that the trial can resume. His case is set for trial on Jan. 7, with opening statements and evidence to begin on Jan. 25. His trial is expected to take a month.

Getreu is being held on $10 million bail in the Taylor case. He remains in Santa Clara County jail in San Jose for the Perlov case without bail. He is also expected to stand trial for Perlov's murder next year.
