For the first time since their disappearance, police have confirmed missing Victorian campers Russell Hill and Carol Clay were met with foul play.

Police made the confirmation to 7NEWS as highly-trained sniffer dogs make their way to Victoria to search for the pair’s remains.

“My honest but sad belief is that unfortunately, they are deceased,” Detective Inspector Andrew Stamper told 7NEWS.

With the help of specialist dogs who are trained to find human remains, police are hoping to narrow their search.

The dogs are being brought in from New South Wales.

“Cadaver dogs are frequently used in missing persons cases and they have a specific ability to smell people,” Stamper said.

“We will have a larger dedicated team working with us now.”

“Clearly there are a number of people that are of interest to us.”

Sounds as though they have more than a gut feeling, doesn't it?

I am wondering if the probable confrontation which we are all now pretty sure led to this tragedy/mystery may have started quite some time ago. Weeks, months, maybe even several years. Two people/groups who had several run-ins over time, with each time mounting animosity and anger. Russell and Carol probably wouldn't have talked about it, being discreet about their trips.

Well now, they can't actually confirm that they met with foul play, can they? They can only confirm that that is what they now believe. Yes, I know I'm pernickety!

I have seen claims that they ran into illegal hunting. What would be hunted illegally in that area?

Deer. During the searches, a considerable amount of dead deer have been found - according to one of the searchers on the Under Investigation show. One was found just 50 metres from where Russell and Carol camped.

Perhaps the illegality comes in if people do not have a Game License, hunt outside the permitted areas and times, kill more than their legal limit.

Yes, why did they wait so long?

Reading the Advertiser this morning. The official police statement says ... “Missing Persons squad can confirm we have used NSW Police cadaver dogs as part of the searches for missing campers Russell Hill and Carol Clay in the Wonnangatta area”. Not that they are just bringing them in now.

Perhaps the cadaver dogs hit on Russell and Carol's campsite.

Also noting that the dogs were brought in from NSW to search in the Victoria High Country in this case.

Did they say if the search will be around the campsite ?

Maybe someone has come forward with information about seeing someone digging around the time last heard from Russell and Carol or even later.

Or maybe the nearest Bunnings or other store, has been checked out and someone who bought shovels etc was found to be in the area at the same time as Carol and Russell.

It didn't say exactly where the cadaver dogs searched.

But police had indicated some time ago that they think Carol and Russell may have been "carted away". Perhaps the cadaver dogs hit on the campsite and couldn't find a scent past that area? Maybe there were tyre tracks where the scent stopped, or the scent stopped at a dirt road/parking area?

At this point, we don't really know what kind of results the cadaver dogs had. Just that the police feel pretty certain that foul play is involved. And they are looking at a number of people.

I'm sure there is a lot that the Police know that they are keeping to themselves for now. At least I hope so.

Hoping there will be some sort of conclusion for Russell and Carol and their families.

It must be horrendous for them not knowing where they are and what happened to them.

I wonder if they were able to get any dna from the campsite.

Getting it is one thing, but matching it to someone is another thing altogether.

I wonder if one day, every person arrested will have to have a sample of their dna taken. Just like they do with fingerprints.

I bet in the old days, long ago, taking fingerprints might have seemed like an invasion of privacy.

Hi everyone. . I was thinking what if at the camp that night they were approached by people who during a confrontation decided too take the drone, keys, phones , what if they had a Windows of time without being able to communicate for help they last resort start a bonfire hoping to be spotted

There were car keys hidden on the vehicle so unless very seriously injured they could have driven out.
