That's what confounds me the most. He made mistakes he never should have made. He made mistakes he knew better than to make.
Obviously, he DIDN'T know better. Sometimes, professional students develop an academic persona that has them doing only what they have to do to pass classes. They're not necessarily deep thinkers, nor do they stray from their chosen curriculum. This fellow may have had a grasp of a kind of collation of law enforcement data, but little or no interest in hands on forensics collection and analyzation. From what I've seen of his writings, he's more interested in what makes a serial killer tick than how many separate pieces make the watch. His greatest interest is motivation, not making plaster casts of footprints. Its like the layers of knowledge required to be a computer specialist. You can know all about programs useful for accomplishing various tasks, but know nothing about the code required to create those programs.
Harkening back to John Dougles (FBI Behavioral Science) these kinds of killer fantasists are so invested in their fantasies that they neglect ruminating on what they'll do post-murder. What seems like obvious, foolish mistakes is nothing more than a fantasist floundering around in blood with a body (or bodies) they have no idea of how to dispose. Post-murder behavior has him scrambling for solutions at a time when the collective mind of law enforcement is already on his trail (See Bundy, Ed Kemper, Dahmer, Wayne Williams).

Perhaps he didn’t set out to murder. Wonder if he had any previous incidents of turning off of phone before going to stalk them.
Possibly this was his creepy physical outlet, to go hang out by their house fantasizing.

MOO

Then he impulsively decided to go inside and rape using a knife he had in his car to gain compliance.
When he gets to the 3rd floor room two are there instead of one, and his plan goes sideways, he murders instead, starts to leave runs into Xana kills her, and Ethan, and walks straight out failing to see DM looking out he room door.
But hadn't used extreme forensic caution in preparation because his course of action began impulsively.
He then disposed of weapons and clothes on way home. Afraid to wash his car he did all his normal things, was hoping he would not get caught and get the car out as soon as he could.

If he had just one target, he likely studied her habits, her house....

Probably found the same listing we did. Mapped out her room, the staircase, ingress and egress. Noted that living room step.

If he had just one target, IMO the other people in that house were nothing to him.

Poorly planned. Wicked all around.

I have eight(8) 4K video cameras around my property. The have incredibly clear video... but no sound.

I never thought sound would be important and I wonder how many video camera systems other than doorbell applications like Ring, have actual audio?
I have a ring doorbell and four ring security light cameras, they record sound and have night vision. They catch every cat, raccoon, possum, owl, and spider that wanders by.

... It seems to me if it was able to pick up that, the video sound would also be overpowered by traffic noise, actual voices in all the homes, bird chirping and other organic surrounding noises IDK
Just seems odd especially for a residential camera...much less recording continually. MOO
BBM. There may not have been any passing cars, other people talking, or birds sounds during the recording, due to the late hour. For sure, birds in the northern states, in the winter, don't usually chirp in the dark.

I haven't spent much time on motivation to this point but this is what has come together for me. I would be interested in hearing thoughts on this. :) I don't think BK held a very high opinion of himself. I think he just pretended to. Back in the Dark Ages, when I was just out of college ;), I had this crazy idea that people who display a superiority complex are often over compensating for an inferiority complex. Since then I've read articles that support that. Dumb luck on my part, I assure you, but I think that's what BK was doing. He desperately wanted to be a genius and get the girl. Being socially awkward, he did what he thought portrayed those things. Only he didn't get it right and he offended people, creeped them out and was rejected again and again.

I think that's why he graded the students so harshly, to show them that he was smarter than they were. "Here's what I know and why you got it wrong." That's why his former friend said BK told him he wasn't very smart and put him down. And he really didn't like women showing him up. Like the woman in class that he made so angry she stormed out and left her things behind.

The same with dating, like when he stated that he could go to a club and get any woman he wanted. Pitiful, really. My experience has been that guys who really can get any (or almost any) woman they want don't spend their time bragging about what they could do. They just do what they do and laugh as the other guys eat their hearts out.

I'm starting to believe he either already had an unhealthy fascination with murder, or he developed one during his studies. I'm not sure why. But I do think he was came into contact with at least one of the girls, and it ended with him somehow being offended, insulted, or rejected. Maybe he asked to come to one of their parties, and was told no. Maybe he asked one of them his standard creepy questions about their schedule and where they lived, and they told him to stuff it.

Whatever it was, he began stalking her/them, fantasizing about his revenge. Either he's killed before and this was an escalation murder, or he didn't go in there intending to kill four people with pretty much his bare hands. He may have kick boxed, but he's not trained in hand to hand combat that we know of, so I can't think he could expect to take on four people and have no complications. But I can sort of see him thinking he could sneak in during the wee hours, kill the one who offended him, and leave.

Only it didn't work out the way he planned for it to. Xena was still awake. And that changed everything. Right now, I think the reason he didn't see D was because he was freak out by the fact that he just killed four people and just wanted to get the heck out of there before anyone else showed up. And that's why he sped away. He was fleeing.

Thoughts?
I like the way you think. BK did not commit these murders in a vacuum. I think he has been struggling with violent impulses for years. It seems that he was bullied for years, outcast, and rejected by his peer group during his formative years. This is not uncommon, unfortunately. But it obviously has a negative impact on a person and leads to turmoil that is beyond the person's ability to cope.

I believe some people internalize this turmoil leading to depression, anxiety and sometimes suicide. Some people build up rage and resentment and externalize it to the point they shoot up the school. Some people, and I believe BK is one of them, attempt to channel their aggression and violent impulses in socially acceptable ways. They want to be army rangers, police officers, take up boxing to beat the crap out of people without consequence. It seems BK tried to do that for a time. He came roaring back for his senior year, lean and aggressive, in order to turn things around. That didn't help him fit in or gain esteem either because who wants to be around someone like that? Then army ranger and police officer goals did not work out for him for either whatever reason. More failure. My theory is he was then thrown off track when he started self medicating with heroin to numb himself and keep his impulses in check. But one can't really gain esteem and admiration in that direction either.

He seems to flounder a bit then finally achieves his BA in psychology at age 26. Success. Then a master's degree at 28. More success. Then he is accepted into a PhD program and selected as a TA. His self esteem is probably better at that point but I imagine his violent and aggressive impulses remained nonetheless, but probably at a level he could somewhat manage.

Then, disaster. He arrives at WSU, 2500 miles from home, alone, with no support system. This is a lot of stress. For anyone. PhD programs are stressful for even the most well adjusted people, but he wasn't well adjusted. Then what happens? He expects to be admired and respected and worshipped by the undergrads as some kind of genius, but instead is rejected. AGAIN. He's odd. His social skills are still poor. He is extremely aggressive in his grading and comments on student's papers. Then on top of that his professor singles him out for some kind of public feedback session where he is picked apart and humiliated publicly by a lecture hall full of undergrads.

He's now mentally back in high school. The resentment, rage and aggression is back full force, only this time he is 2500 miles away in an unfamiliar environment with no support system in place. I think he then arrives at, "Okay, fine. Let me show you people what I'm REALLY capable of and it's going to be spectacular and blow your minds." And off to the races we go.

This is all my OPINION based on the facts, interviews and MSM linked posted here previously. I do believe he thought he'd get away with it but still derive extreme satisfaction from the fear, horror and shock from the community. He has their attention now, doesn't he? Even if they don't know it's him, he knows. And that's enough for him. For now. IMO

If BK maintains the KA-BAR knife was stolen, does this become a circumstantial case? Yes, his car has been caught in the area on several occasions, but he might find some way to explain that away. Perhaps he could say he left his phone in the car (hence the tracking) and the knife in the car, and someone kept "borrowing" the car. I am wondering if there is any other DNA evidence that would tie him to the crime scene ...
I'm eager to hear the car's movements and the DNA explained more extensively if this goes to trial. The affidavit is very detailed but also leaves a lot of questions unanswered.
1, A "white sedan" with "no front license plate" was captured on video on Snyder Rd (approx .6 miles from King Rd.), then, there are multiple sightings of "Suspect Vehicle 1" going back and forth on King Rd., all around the neighborhood between 3:30 and 4:20. This is almost an hour!
Where else was the car during this 50 minute time period??
2, Wasn't the food delivery driver at the house when the white car was driving up and down this exact road at the exact time? This person didn't see anything notable that could be included in the affidavit to show cause?

I have many, many more questions...

Agreed, except the picture of the ka bar with two edged sides makes it look dangerous even to carry, like if he lifted the slider door up to bypass the latch lock (if it was locked) did he set the knife down on the ground while doing it?, thus the sheath. Earlier someone mentioned if he wore a hoodie with a muff pocket on the front, as well as another wondered if he slipped it between his lower back and pants. Can't say if he carried a two sided razor blade knife loose, but he tripped up on so many other details who knows if was on purpose or intentional.

ETA, do you think it was intentional or he was being framed, or?
I'm just curious: when you say framed, do you mean the police are trying to wrongfully convict him to close the case? Or do you mean that some other third party, "the real murderer", is trying to frame him for this crime? I've heard this mentioned before but, so far, I don't recall seeing anyone point out something they felt suggested someone was framing him. I would be interested if someone could point out something they feel suggests that. Thanks!

"He didn't have to go upstairs."

If X was his target, E might've been a surprise. X being awake might've been a surprise. Two dead. :(

He wouldn't have needed to go upstairs.

If M was his target, he needed to go upstairs. K, collateral. :(

If M was the target, why kill X? Why kill E? Why leave D?

IMO the answer is timing.

He had to go upstairs to reach his target.
He opted to come back downstairs -- to leave.

IMO if X and E were behind closed doors, like D, if K had been in her own room, I think his target would be clear. One dead. :( Swift, silent, every bit as stupid (vehicle caught on CCTV, phone usage up to and after) and still altogether evil. Might've left with his sheath however.

He didn't have to go upstairs. But he did. Therefore, IMO, his target was on the third floor.

So relieved he's been arrested.

Praying he gets the fairest of trials and the fairest of convictions, so he never walks among us again.

I don't think you're too far off base.

I think we'll find out he's obsessed with murder, blood, crime scenes, etc.

MOO, but I think he came to the point of doing this by not getting that internship. I feel like he wanted that internship to fulfill his desires of being close to crime scenes. Ultimately, he didn't (I assume) get it, so he got his thrill this way.
Because his apt was only 10 miles from Moscow, Idaho, I think he may have a pattern of going there, often. He was only 28, He may have started out just out looking for girls, in the "normal" sense. Plus, Moscow is a university town. He was a university phD candidate, so a bmoc, He would have fit right in among the students at local night spots with no problem. I think he may have first seen one or more of his victims in that way, become fixated on them, maybe attempted a romantic overture which was firmly rejected. That could have led to his stalking them. I think once he knew where they lived, he felt a sense of power, the sting of rejection began to fester in his mind and a murderous plan took shape. moo

I will respectfully disagree:). We have Ring cameras and the front door one is > 100 ft from the road. EVERY time a car drives or a person walks down the street it records the motion. They are incredibly sensitive and heavy snow/rain, bugs in the summer can trigger it to record. I often turn off the notification sometimes because it gets to be too much.
But how often does it record sound without motion, as in this case?

‘It's the most fascinating true-crime story since Truman Capote's In Cold Blood and we'd pay top dollar – I'm talking very high seven figures, at least $25million – for just the book rights,'

'And with the arrest of that eerie and strange suspect – a truly frightening and bizarre odd duck who studied crime like an academic and then allegedly killed – it has added even more intrigue, fascination, and immense value to the story,' the editor added.

'This murder case has all the elements for a blockbuster bestseller.'

No shame. It’s only a matter of time before Netflix picks this up

Sorry if this has been discussed already, but how likely do we think it is that the thud/voices/barking that the neighbor's camera picked up was the same sound that woke up DM? She described it as sounding like KG playing with the dog upstairs. Now, if I think about what kind of sounds I would associate with a person playing with a dog on an upper floor, I would think footsteps, voices, and puppy sounds (barking, squealing, panting, etc.). So, theoretically, that seems plausible to me.

Of course, if those two instances are actually one, that means one of two things:

Either the time on one of the cameras is off (remember, we've got the sounds on camera at 4:17 and the car leaving at 4:20; although, we don't know if that was the same camera) and the timeline we're working with isn't entirely correct, or everything happened within a span of just three minutes.

At Washington State, Mr. Kohberger was continuing with his studies, his classmates said. B.K. Norton, who was in the same graduate program as Mr. Kohberger, said his quiet, intense demeanor had made some classmates uncomfortable.

Another student said Mr. Kohberger seemed interested in the thought processes of criminals while they committed crimes and less interested in the social factors that might lead people to do so, saying that he believed some people were just bound to break the law. The fellow student, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he feared that speaking publicly could jeopardize his safety, described Mr. Kohberger as the black sheep of the class, often taking contrarian viewpoints and sometimes getting into arguments with his peers, particularly women.

Agree but he did. IMO, too much credit has been given to BCK. IMO, he is a man child who existed in his own mind and could imagine committing the perfect murder but when it came to doing it, it just didn't go as planned.

I am assuming, maybe incorrectly we are talking about the little grey house and the lamp looking camera on the porch?? I have never seen such a camera. I’m going to see if I can find a replica.
Your assumption would be correct, they list the address in the PCA - 1112 King Road. Those lightbulb socket cameras are widely available on Amazon.

Jealousy? The girls were gorgeous, successful and had boyfriends. BCK had nothing but books and studies. His sex life was 0? He fixated on the girls he wanted? Stalking them, a way to get sexual satisfaction and then he flipped to do the perfect revenge slaughter thinking he was SMART enough to do the perfect crime? IMO I doubt if he cares if he lives or dies now but wants to prove he is smarter than anyone else I. The courts. JMOO

I think this guy will get the fairest trial that ever was. He will never again take a single step as a free man.moo

My family moved out to the West coast when I was in college. I drove myself across country solo ( Ca to Va) 4 times back and fourth when school was out. No way, no how did either of them remotely consider coming with me. I wouldn't have wanted them to anyway. That would have been absolute HELL!! I could make it in 3 days flat. The last leg was looong but doable. The 84 Olds Cutless was a trooper!!
Because family time together is valued especially when you have limited means, the tendency is to rely on each other more just because you can. You only get to have a son for so long. If you already know your son suffers from feeling out of place the parents will look to support him and spend time together. I would bet the father feels fortunate to have spent the time with his son after the fact he was "taken away". Now, it is far away from where they reside. I believe <modsnip> hand the resulting bullies contributed significantly to his formation. In public institutions, violence and bullying have escalated since we were young. Now, having a group fight in the halls or parking lot are daily expectations and survival skills to avoid them is a common developmental response. When you are the focus of daily bullying such that you can not escape and just want the pressure to let up, be in the same space to say the same things as everyone else, contribute to the discussion like everyone else , this wears a person down. I believe there is a key transition period from around 5th grade to 7th/8th grade that defines your formation and self image. If institution have formation counseling with adults in the class during this period, I believe it will significantly reduce the need for security systems. Or make them more manageable. So, you can rest easily as we did in the 70s. But even then there was KBs, just fewer with a larger umbrellas of faith forming consciousness in the population
