GUILTY OR - Jeanette Maples, 15, dies of abuse, torture in Eugene, 9 Dec 2009

Using my magic powers...before I read the article...it is a paid administrative leave.

The ball was dropped 'cause the agency is overwhelmed/was in turmoil/was underfunded/turnover was high so the calls were filed/case workers told their bosses but nothing happened....

did I miss anything?

Hopin everyone sleeps well at night in that agency.

Here is the thing-with a track record like this, how can the agency be given the authority to be decision makers AT all when it comes to issues surrounding child abuse and mistreatment??

Oh, RIIGHT-it was just this case. Think of how many other children were helped....

Department of Human Services is a joke they just dont give a dam$.Sorry but I have been dealing with them.They feel children belong with the moms no matter what.Right now my grandson 4 and 7 his sister are living with their so called mom who has let her bf of 6 months hit them with a belt,he tied the 7yr old to a chair with a re has taken pics of them naked and the kids have said much more.DYFS was called many times even the police about the naked pics.The kids went to pros sex crimes office to talk to detectives.They were at my house and were afraid to leave to go anywhere neither one wanted to go back with the mom.She was living with bf till DYFS told her she couldnt.Oh but they are letting her and the kids live with his cousin who lives 10 minutes away, and she thinks he is Mr.Wonderful.The 7 yr old even told school principle about abuse and she reported it.We told the kids just tell the truth and DYFS will help they will keep you safe.The so called mom is now pregnant by this abuser and is thrilled she calls all the abuse unfounded but she was there and let it happen.My advice to others if a child is being abused sell your home and run with the child if at all possible.That is the only way to keep them safe because the system doesnt give a crap about the kids.I have been reading for years about children dying like this and I always thought it was because families didnt care ,BOY was I wrong it is the system.Those of you who the system has helped you really do not know how lucky you and the child are.

not to get too much off topic or personal, but did the kids tell dyfs what was going on? i can guess they felt intimidated by mom and the abuser to keep silent.......but if they told dyfs why werent they believed?

They told 3 different DYFS workers they are believed but instead of placing children with family they are letting them stay with the mom who is still seeing the abuser and says she is now having her 3rd baby he is the father.When they first told DYFS was called I was on the phone to My grandson and he said to me MOM MOM Kenny hit me with a belt,The mom started yelling and screaming at him saying why are you lying your ruining my life,I told him I believed him but tried changing subject to calm mom down, he started yelling back at her No mommy your the liar.He and his sister are scared of her and it took alot of time till they came out with more.4 yr old told me more horrible things that the BF did to him I called Police,Prosecutors office sex crimes det talked to kids but they can not ask,they just let kids talk he just told some of the things.After they talked to kids they told me BF can not be near kids and they want the kids in counseling so the rest comes out.They believe the kids have been abused but letting them stay with mom is a horrible mistake.She will intimate them to keep quiet.I tried to get tempp custody till counseling starts so the truth comes out but since DYFS is involved Judge did not see or hear me just denied me till Dyfs is done.Meanhile she is now keeping the kids isolated from all family.She keeps saying its all unfounded but If you saw kids saying these things noway is it not true.She thinks BF is Wonderful and got pregnant on purpose to trap him.She is a danger to her children IMO.

Mikeysmommom--I am so sorry for the misery and pain you are going through. I've personally had both wonderful and horrid experiences with state children's agencies but I'm more involved with them than most.

My suggestion to you is to keep a detailed log about EVERYTHING concerning the children; your fears and suspicions, events, comments the kids make, notations of every contact with the agency, etc. There just might come a time when you are listened to. A judge might turn to you one day in the court room and ask your opinion. Be ready as I've seen it happen over and over.

My heart breaks for Jeanette's Grandma as she felt she did the right thing and she truly did. But IMO, she naively assumed that DHS would pick up the ball. That was a reasonable assumption. Instead they dropped it and stepped over it. And now, a sad little girl is dead and a family left devastated.

Don't give up. Try to put all your correspondence in writing--letters delivered by Return Receipt or emails. Be polite but persistent.

Paper trail, paper trail, paper trail. It's a mantra we advocates are taught from Day One.

You have to get leverage somewhere-let's take your stuff back to the jury room unless you do not mind it being seen by the public. JMVHO. I think there are enough people in the know around here that you just might be able to be a squeaky wheel and avoid a situation that evolves into something even more horrific.

Instead of the TRENTON NJ PD going to his house they sent DYFS and all she did was tell him the kids said he took naked pics never asked to see camera's or computers.All DYFS did is warn him to get rid of evidence.Not only is he a but the kids EGG DONOR is one also.I cant image hearing what she has heard (She has witnessed some of the abuse but lies for him)She is now thrilled she is pregnant by him.IMO she is just as bad!!!!!

She did not tell him to get rid of it but she never looked once he knew kids told I am sure he got rid of it.PD should have handled it

UPDATE: Parents accused of murdering teen daughter back in court

Eugene (KMTR) Prosecutors believe Jeanette Maples died from abuse and neglect. Tuesday’s hearing is to see if two other children should be removed from Angela and Richard McAnulty’s custody.

The State Department of Human Services says Maples parents are in the child welfare system of at least one other state. The out of state reports include drug abuse, physical abuse and neglect.

Here in Oregon, DHS received four reports prior the teen’s death. A spokesman called the family, “high risk”. DHS will make its case for removing the custody of the other two children in the home.

I hope it isn't tooooooo much of a stretch for DHS & the court to find that removing the other kids is a good idea!

No kbl, the Maples are being held and DHS has custody of the other children. This is a hearing to determine the fate of the other children. I'm certain they are either with a foster family or with family but under the "jurisdiction of the court" for their safety. This is just one of many hearings that will allow DHS to petition the court concerning a plan for the kids--whether it's a permanent placement with a family member or an adoption. By law, these hearings have set time tables.

We certainly, in our system want to learn from something and if we made mistakes we want to correct them," said John Radich with the Department of Human Services. That judge sure doesn't want the press, the family, or the public to see the facts about how Jeanette died. I keep wondering if we're going to learn that this child suffered any systematic "discipline" such as what killed little Lydia Schatz? This is the case that I referred to in a post yesterday concerning the "scapegoating" of children. Regarding the last quote, is anyone thinking what I'm thinking?

Warrant in teen&#8217;s death likely to stay sealed


"A media request to unseal a search warrant affidavit containing details of the Jeanette Marie Maples murder case is likely to be denied, a Lane County Circuit Court Judge said Friday.

The court&#8217;s presiding judge, Mary Ann Bearden, said she intended to deny the request from The Oregonian newspaper after hearing opposition from the prosecutor and from the teen&#8217;s alleged killers, her mother and stepfather.

Angela Darlene McAnulty, 41, and Richard McAnulty Sr., 42, face aggravated murder charges in what court documents called the &#8220;intentional maiming and torture" death of Jeanette on Dec. 9. The girl&#8217;s mother also was charged with tampering with physical evidence in the case. The couple could face the death penalty if convicted......"

I'm very afraid that child might have been sexually abused or pregnant. I also think that we're going to learn that her family subscribed to some sort of dogmatic discipline with her. By all accounts she was not a spirited child. I don't think she fought back much at all. She accepted her "lot". She's described as timid and compliant and scared of her home. What did they do to that little girl?
