"Van der Sloot made the claims in a 44-minute exchange of emails between himself and a friend. A source told the magazine: 'He emailed, "I'm in such a serious situation that I would prostitute myself in return for help".

He also said that he had unsuccessfully asked his mother for help four times and that his younger brother Vaneltin refused to send him money, claiming he would just spend it on gambling.

He was desperate - he owed more than $500 to the hotel and others."

..."after Joran met Stephany, he was tipped off that she had just won $2,500 gambling on blackjack"
..."Joran was aware she hadn't had time to bank her winnings but was keeping them in the glove compartment of her car."
..."As a result of this, the attorney for Stephany's family, Edward Alvarez, says that he will now ask for a new charge against Joran - that of aggravated theft resulting in death."

This article has more information on the conversation with his friend which occurred 2 days before the murder...

"A preliminary hearing for Joran van der Sloot in Peru was postponed for a week Wednesday, according to Ricardo Flores, the father of the young woman van der Sloot is accused of killing.

A judge postponed the closed-door hearing -- originally scheduled for Wednesday -- because van der Sloot did not have legal representation in the courtroom, Flores said.

Flores said Wednesday that he expected a trial to begin within 15 days."

A jail essentially run by the inmates from what I understand. There are boundaries and rampant corruption. I believe the (underpaid) guards feel much safer letting the inmates settle their own disputes. his is not uncommon in Brazil, Peru, and some of the third world.

from article

The menacing hulk recently left a jailhouse meeting with a visitor to find his cell had been ransacked. He went berserk, divulged an insider.

“Two shirts, a cap, a pair of shoes and about $35 he’d stashed under his mattress had been stolen.

“Joran screamed at the guards, demanding to know why they hadn’t stopped the thief. But they just shrugged and turned their backs.

“Joran yelled at them, ‘I don’t need you cowards – I’ll take care of this myself!’”

so Joran is allowed to yell at guards and doesn't get punished??? What kind of 'jail' is this?

"Ricardo Flores encountered Van der Sloot at the Castro Castro prison Wednesday for what was to have been a hearing before the suspect’s pending trial. The hearing was postponed because no defense lawyer showed up. Previous attorney Maximo Altez has quit."

Here's a short video of Ricardo Flores at the prison:

So, what are they going to do with Joran now? What happens if no one will defend him?

He's not exactly the nicest guy, kwim. Now everyone can see what poor Beth has put up with for all these years. :( .....at least he doesn't have the Peruvian government standing behind him!

Stephany's father, Ricardo Flores, expressed "anger and indignation" after seeing JVDS for the first time in the courtroom:

"Ricardo Flores claimed that the murderer of her daughter enjoys privileges in prison and [has] a business."

"'For the first time I see [him], is very fat. It is a very hard time for me, could not stand to be with [him], I saw him at the time [he] entered. I think what hurt me most was to see him physically, [he's] better than before, while my daughter ... ' said [Flores] without being able to finish his speech.

After a pause and achieve recovery, Flores claimed that the Dutch citizen is enjoying privileges in the maximum security prison Miguel Castro Castro.

'It is important that the Peruvian authorities put an end to privileges. I've been told [he has] a business in prison, and if you see how [he is] today, [you] realize that [he] is not suffering,' said Flores.

The business Ricardo Flores [speaks of] would be a kiosk selling products like soft drinks."

Flores believes Joran has a girlfriend: "the woman is an employee of the casino where his daughter Stephany met van der Sloot. The woman was present in the courtroom as well. 'We know this girl has been seeing him for several weeks now'."

I have so much sympathy for Stephany's father having to see that thriving, not suffering, in prison...it's a disgrace that Joran's being treated so well. I can only hope now that Flores is in the government he has more power over Joran's prison treatment and in the court's final verdict.

It's a slap in the face to Stephany's family just as it's always been to Natalee's.

Justice and karma sometimes move slowly, but always surely. I have to believe that.

"Maria Elena Ramirez spoke for the first time of the crime of [her] daughter , who [she] said [she's] going to see. "She waits for me," she added.

Been a little over a year and only saw [her] for the burial of her daughter. It was wrong and all this time avoided the cameras, the flashes and, in [her] own words, [she] left the entire burden of the process to her husband. Maria Elena Ramirez broke his silence and spoke for the first time about the murder of [her] daughter Stephany Flores.

...[Ricardo] Flores also revealed that there is a pending thread in the investigation and indicated that there would be another person involved in the murder of his daughter. This subject would have given information him to Van der Sloot [about] how much the young student of the University of Lima bet and won." (bolded by me)

Here's the actual TV interview. Although it is in Spanish, it shows Stephany's mother speaking for the first time, as well as the demeanor of Stephany's parents...ironically, her mother seems much stronger than her father, who breaks into tears, during this TV interview.

Does anyone have a guess as to what that passage means?

ETA never mind. It's clearer in Spanish:

Flores también reveló que hay un hilo pendiente en la investigación y señaló que habría otra persona involucrada en el asesinato de su hija. Este sujeto le habría dado información a Van der Sloot sobre cuánto apostaba y ganaba la joven estudiante de la Universidad de Lima.

Sr. Flores "also revealed" that JVDS may have had an accomplice who told JVDS how much the victim had won at the Casino.

I thought I had seen something earlier about JVDS being tipped off about Stephany's winnings...and I just found it, from June 8 article:

"The source also told the Enquirer: 'Police have found a casino employee who admits that after Joran met Stephany, he was tipped off that she had just won $2,500 gambling on blackjack..

'Another witness, one of Stephany's girlfriends, has told police that Joran was aware she hadn't had time to bank her winnings but was keeping them in the glove compartment of her car.' "

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...te-weeks-jailed-murder.html?ito=feeds-newsxml

Not clear if it was the casino employee who tipped him off or someone else???

FINALLY....Joran appeared in court!!!

"Nearly 13 months after the crime, for the first time ...Joran van der Sloot... agreed to cooperate with the judges of the Fourth Court Criminal ... and addressed them in Spanish during the diligence against him yesterday in the Miguel Castro Castro prison.

There were three steps at a time. First viewed a video of the Municipality of Miraflores on the day of crime that did not provide any new data, then [Ricardo Flores] had to identify one of the wallets that had stopped to see if it was Stephany's, and finally resulted listen to the driver that helped him flee [Ven der Sloot] by land to Chile, but this did not materialize because [the driver] did not arrive on time.

... the proceedings were completed and the investigation of the case, so the process will pass to the Third Criminal Court "

http://translate.google.com/transla...r-sloot-acepto-colaborar-juicio-hablo-espanol

Nothing is mentioned on who represented Joran, so the court must have appointed a public defender, as they stated last week that they would.

"Van der Sloot and his new private defense attorney were in court on Tuesday for a preliminary hearing.

The case against Joran Van der Sloot ... was headed to the prosecutor's office on Wednesday.

Formal charges could take up to two months to be filed, depending on the backlog. Once charges are filed against him, a three-judge panel will set the date for a trial to begin.

'For the Van der Sloot case, we may be looking at five to seven sessions for the oral proceedings, one session per week approximately.' "

"Tuesday's hearing in a Lima prison had all the twists and turns we've come to expect from anything involving Joran van der Sloot. He's suddenly capable of participating in Spanish and the local media are chasing rumors of a pregnant girl friend who's been helping ease his time in prison.

Flores says van der Sloot is living like royalty, runs a snack concession for other inmates and even gets conjugal visits from a girl friend. El Commercio could not verify rumors that girl friend, an employee at the casino where van der Sloot met Stephany Flores, is pregnant."

http://www.cbs42.com/content/localn...-forward/SHdUpKl96k-bJJvvkw7kNg.cspx?rss=1659

"The rumor that the Dutchman enjoys private visits from a Peruvian girlfriend, who is now rumored to be pregnant with his child, surfaced in several foreign media outlets, including Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, SBS Broadcasting and Peru's Periodismo en Línea news agency.

Van der Sloot's girlfriend was reportedly working in the same casino where he met Peruvian business student Stephany Flores in May 2010.

Flores said he is also angered by reports that van der Sloot has been running a lucrative business out of his cell selling candy, allegedly supplied by his girlfriend."

I wonder if this is the same dark-haired 'mystery woman' who was reported to visit him soon after his incarceration in Castro Castro???!!!???

This one says Joran was appointed an attorney by the judge. It's in Spanish so someone who knows what they're doing should translate it for us. Thanks :)

http://www.rnw.nl/espanol/article/privilegios-de-un-reo-holandés-en-cárcel-peruana

According to the Google translation of the article above, the court DID assign an attorney, but perhaps it wasn't a 'public defender' as we know it, but a private attorney appointed by the judge???

"At the beginning of the hearing, the judge asked directly the alleged killer: "Do you agree that this process be carried in Castilian hereafter?" Van der Sloot, who has a broad command of Castilian, and repeatedly refused to proceed views citing ignorance of the language, this time he did accept. Next, the judge set the road map of what, hereinafter will be the judicial process in terms of their language.

After that, the judge, as happened in the previous hearing, he asked Van der Sloot if it already had a lawyer. And like the previous occasion, the defendant did not have it, after which the judge asked a lawyer to defend him, and finally assigned a very young age. "I think that this guy is nothing," said Ricardo Flores with some disdain."

Thanks, FLNY. Finally some wheels are beginning to turn.
