Resolved FL - Fort Lauderdale, WhtFem UP7840, 45-65, notes in Arabic, Apr'03

I'm working off my phone which is not ideal, but my mother also said this isn't traditional Arabic. She knew immediately it was either Croatian or Bosnian. She said the first Page is all about god and seems to be writings from the Koran. She did pick out some names and she's going to take it to a friend that might be able to translate it compleatly.
My computer caught a nasty virus and I'm having to wipe the hard drive clean. It's supposed tobe done on Tuesday, so i should have the note then.

I am interested in the circumstances under which her remains were found. An address was listed in a residential area, which would seem to indicate that she was found inside a house. If so, who owned/rented it at that time? If she were found outside, how could her remains have been there long enough to have decomposed with no one noticing? Hmmmm, I wish they'd release a little more.

Just found a band in Sarajevo called HellRide

https://soundcloud.com/hellride-1

They seem to play Southern Rock (A Bosnian Southern Rock band? Who knew. Could we get so lucky as to find that they were exposed to it in Florida?), and two of the members are named Pero and Zira. Pero seems to be a nickname for "Peter" and may be quite common.

Wow, interesting find about that band. I looked up their facebook page but couldnt understand any of it.

This probably isn't her but I'm putting it up here just to check out. If the boyfriend didn't do something to her, maybe she had a mental breakdown which eventually led to suicide?

There's something about the suicide note that makes me think that the unidentifed woman was schizophrenic.

I'm still working off my phone, but my mom took the note to her friend she thought might be able to help, but she had no luck with it. She said she'll keep trying (her friend is at the local senior center, and hasn't been there when she was)- if she gets it translated, I'll post it ASAP.

I am a professional translator for the languages of former Yugoslavia: Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian.

The person who committed suicide is definitely a Muslim from former Yugoslavia, probably Bosnia.

The first two pages consist of prayers (in what I think is Arabic) and advice to a family member (a daughter?) which prayers to say and when.

Arabic.
Arabic and : "Use for (illegible) and happiness.
Arabic and: "When leaving home - study it."
Arabic.
Arabic and "When you are having difficulties studying"
Next underlined sentence: "Seek forgiveness from Alah."
Arabic
Because of the children, Pero (it sounds like the letter is written to a grown daughter who has children and Pero is her husband).
Be safe and healthy!
Study this often and don't be afraid of misfortune, illnesses and much more.

Love,
Your mom

The rest is in Arabic

What seemed like Zira is not a name but a part of the expression: Be safe and healthy.

Hope this helps.

If there was anything else that needs translating or perhaps a cultural question, I would be happy to help.

I did some research and found out that the remaining pages have to do with Allah and Koran/Kuran. The language is used by Bosnian Muslims but I don't think it is Arabic. Some parts of the text on pages 3 and on can be seen in this Muslim/Bosnian forum: Dove za razne prilike

In any case, it seems that the person who committed suicide was praying.

KivaSupporter, this is the most useful thing on here so far, thanks! Guess the Bosnian metal band was a false lead.
I wonder if the next step should be to contact an organization that looks for missing Bosnians. Alternately, I may have a way to get this to the special attention of the US Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina. I can make up a package and a cover letter.

What do you guys think?

I hope this poor soul has found the forgiveness that she advises her daughter to seek.

Also, the hair color listed as red/auburn.

I suspect this is not the natural color. That color is popular in that area of the world and many women dye their hair.

The following is my theory:

I believe she came to this country as a refugee from Bosnia (the year fits) with her daughter and son-in-law. Or the daughter might have met her future husband in this country. Judging by his name, he would be from the same area. The children may have been born here.

It is also very possible the husband was killed in the war.

This scenario is very typical of what had happened at that time.

I don't have experience with that but would be happy to help in any way possible.

I am guessing her daughter and family are living in the US and may have been looking for her.

The refugees from Bosnia had to go through a special immigration process. ICE would have the records. Also, many of the refugees were sponsored by churches, especially Lutheran churches in the US.

Using the information from KivaSupporter's very helpful posts, I tracked down these articles that might give us some background and leads: http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/19...371_1_bosnian-refugees-dubrovnik-resettlement

http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/20...bosnian-refugees-bosnian-unity-dayton-accords

A long article about some other Bosnian refugees -- I'm not sure they're connected to Ft. Lauderdale, but it's got a lot of detail about the conditions under which they came to this country: http://www.citybeat.com/cincinnati/article-9769-cover_story_refugees_no_more.html

Islamic Relief USA and Lutheran Services Florida seem to have been the two organizations most heavily involved in resettling Bosnian refugees in southern Florida.

Native Ft. Lauderdale here. True native. Just wanted to say that the address listed as the crime scene in the opening post doesn't exist. I've never heard of a Karen Drive and my family has lived in Ft. Lauderdale since the late 1930's.

I went to the Property Appraiser's site - and I tried it a few ways - "no record found". Now there are quite a few "cities" within Broward County (meaning Fort Lauderdale is only one of those cities) and you can select a city when you put in the search. I didn't take the time to try each city - but the crime scene is listed as Ft. Lauderdale - so who knows.

I just wanted to let y'all know that "Karen Drive" doesn't exist in Fort Lauderdale.

HTH

Here's the property appraiser's site link - you can check all you want.

Google recognizes it, and I found a vintage postcard showing it. Apparently it's Karen Club Apartments.

Here's another one on EBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/FT-LAUDERDA...-1943-KAREN-DRIVE-1952-postcard-/110841672175

WOW! I can assure you that the Karen Club Apartments do not exist in Fort Lauderdale.

The link you have from Careyspostcards that shows an aerial view on the corner of a huge canal (looks like either the intracoastal waterway or the downtown New River) and I've been up and down both those waterways and never seen any complex that looks like that at all.

The link from ebay says that post card is from 1952 - so I guess that's possible. Maybe the Karen Club Apartments existed in 1952 on a waterway like that - but they don't anymore. Nope. Not even in 2003. Wish I had more views so I could figure out just where that is.

That property appraiser's link I posted is current and up to date - and Karen Drive doesn't exist - that is what is odd.

That 1952 complex was probably torn down and either had high-rise condos or exclusive private homes built on that waterway.

I was just trying to figure out where this was. FWIW the one from ebay doesn't even look like anywhere on the water in Ft. Lauderdale. The other one could be - but on a point of water that big (and I know all of them) now holds very exclusive private mansions.
