Oh wow....I had not noticed some of these recent updates until now or even realized that new shows came out last week regarding the case. I'm hoping to catch up on the 48 Hrs show as soon as I can. Listening to the "Your Own Backyard" podcast episode now! Thanks for the links!

Paul Flores was arrested on suspicion of being a felon in possession with a firearm around 9:45 a.m. on the western edge of San Pedro, in the area of Summerland and Western avenues, said Officer Tony Im, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department.

Flores has a previous felony conviction for driving under the influence, according to KSBY in San Luis Obispo.

Flores, a San Pedro resident, is considered the sole person of interest in Smart’s disappearance, and no suspects have been named.

Investigators served two search warrants at Flores’ home on the 900 block of Upland Avenue last year, one in February and the other in April.

On Feb. 5, the residence was one of four locations in California and Washington where warrants were served, according to a news release from the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office.

The arrest was based on information developed by the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Department when it searched Flores’ home in April, accompanied by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies.

Flores was the last person to be seen with Smart the night she vanished, San Luis Obispo County sheriff’s spokesman Tony Cipolla said at the time. He “continues to b e a person of interest in the disappearance of Kristin Smart in 1996.”

  • Paul Flores, 44, arrested and charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm stemming from DUI conviction
  • Flores' arrest stems from April 2020 search of his home as part of investigation into 1996 disappearance and presumed death of Kristin Smart
  • Flores has long been a person of interest in the case but was never named a suspect, or charged in Smart's death
  • Flores was said to be last person to be seen with Smart on her way home from an off-campus party
  • In February and April 2020, deputies executed search warrants at locations in California and Washington, including homes of Flores and his mother
He was booked into the Los Angeles County Jail and was released on Thursday night after posting $35,000 bail, reported Los Angeles Times.

Flores was said to be the last person to be seen with Smart on the night of May 25, 1996, when the 19-year-old college student vanished while returning to a dorm at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, after an off-campus party.

He told police at the time that he walked Smart back from the party but parted ways with her about a block from her dorm.

Obviously they had some sort of plan/reason for doing this when/how they did. I'm very curious to see what it ends up being.
He's out on bail now.

Jim Murphy has represented the Smart family in this case for nearly 25 years and he says the 2020 search warrants and the arrest of Flores Thursday on a weapons charge are promising.

While the arrest was not directly connected to Smart’s 1996 disappearance, “Because he was arrested for a felony, we are kind of sending him a message that ‘you are not above the law, Paul’. What's going to happen is that he will be arraigned on a felony. He may or may not get jail time or a substantial amount of jail time, but it will probably get some jail time,” Murphy said. “He's now part of the criminal justice system again so we are going to do what we can to notify the district attorney who is prosecuting him of what we know."

Depending on what comes out of this new criminal case against Flores, Murphy says he plans to serve subpoenas which would allow him access to those search warrants served in February and April of 2020.

“I don't know if there is a connection between the charges currently pending and the ultimate result which we hope to be a criminal trial for the death of Kristin or more information that I can use in a civil trial,” Murphy said.

Murphy said he is working with the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office to see how to move forward before serving subpoenas.

At the time, Flores was questioned but never arrested or charged. Smart's family sued Flores in civil court and he has denied all allegations against him, including being involved in Smart’s disappearance.

Flores has a previous felony conviction for driving under the influence, KSBY in San Luis Obispo reported. Authorities conducted a search warrant on his home in February and April 2020 but never disclosed what they were looking for or if any evidence was found. However, investigators told the outlet that the arrest was a result of the information they received from those searches.

Flores posted $35,000 bail Thursday evening, according to the Los Angeles Sheriffs Department.

Is this the first time they are actually searching THIS property?

Responding to my post.

I believe this home has been searched prior and LE has obtained a new warrant and is back.

This case really does appear to be a family protecting their very dangerous son at all costs. I predict at this moment, Ruben Flores (father of Paul) is as indignant as ever as this search warrant is being carried out at his home. IMO
