GUILTY AL - Carla Fuqua, 28, Piedmont, 29 Oct 2009

That's interesting info, Donj-- even though Chandler's incarcerated, it's a sure bet that his "business" was picked up by a trusted individual. Maybe even a right hand man...

But, suffice it to say that there is a level of distrust that permeates a community of druggies when a former drug user is suddenly embracing a clean and sober life.

I wonder if LE was aware of this story being run? (I kind of think so.)

She was buried on Sunday

On Oct. 17, 2013, Jimmy Ray Steed pleaded "not guilty" to murdering Carla Fuqua of Piedmont, AL.
http://eastal.myfoxal.com/news/news/272443-jimmy-steed-pleads-not-guilty-piedmont-womans-murder.
He also faces charges of "14 counts of first degree manufacture of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia." And he's still a suspect in the murders of Burrows, McFry and Karen Steed.

An earlier article:
http://calhouncounty.myfoxal.com/news/news/224933-suspicious-house-fire-connected-recent-meth-lab-bust ... mentions that the home on Hughes Road where Jimmy was living when arrested, burned at midnight in August of 2012, 2 days after his arrest. In August he was held on $100,000 bond, charged with 15 counts of manufacturing meth (the police found "15 meth labs"). The home that burned was owned by Jimmy's family.

In 1995, Jimmy lived in a different home nearby when his wife, Karen, disappeared. Patrick Burrows (whose motorcycle was later found in a pond nearby) was last seen leaving that house. Seven years later (2002?), that home also burned.

Nothing is said about whether both homes burned because meth labs easily ignite or if Jimmy had someone burn them for him (he was in jail when the 2nd one burned) to destroy evidence of murder. But the latter fire is still under investigation.

Police are hopeful that witnesses will come forward now that Jimmy's behind bars. Fuqua's family believes Jimmy and other people were involved in the murders. "If they had them all, I'd feel better," said Darlene Cook, Fuqua's mom. Fuqua's cousin, Michelle, said Jimmy would pay and "I hope others pay."

Anyone with information is asked to call the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office at (256) 236-6600 or Crimestoppers at (256) 238-1414.

I live one county over but haven't lived here long. I'm grateful to say I'm never met the perps.

... with tidbits I haven't seen before.

The Sept. article: http://www.annistonstar.com/view/full_story/23542719/article-Murder-suspect-receives-attorney-for-drug-charges

... gives the name of his court-appointed lawyer for the drug charges, who said he might end up defending Steed for the murder charge as well.

Steed's bonds for all the charges total over a million bucks.

The Oct article (same date as the one I posted directly above here, but by a different reporter and longer): http://www.annistonstar.com/view/fu...guilty-in-2009-murder?instance=news_secondary http://www.annistonstar.com/view/full_story/23870823/article-Piedmont-man-pleads-not-guilty-in-2009-murder?instance=news_secondary

... states that at his arraignment Steed answered the judge's questions "in whispers." Fuqua's mom attended the arraignment. "I wanted to see him eye to eye."

A Piedmont man pleaded guilty Tuesday to murder in the death of a 28-year-old woman who disappeared in 2009...

Steed will be sentenced to between 23 years and 85 years in prison, he said. "Also, he'll get the benefit of concurrent sentences, meaning they'll run all at the same time," Howell said... Steed will not receive time off for good behavior while in prison.

Steed's sentencing hearing is set for Feb. 17.

During an emotional hearing today a judge sentenced a Piedmont man to serve the remainder of his life in prison for killing a young mother. Calhoun County Circuit Judge Brian Howell sentenced Jimmy Steed, 55, to 105 years in prison. He is to serve at least 85 of those years, Howell said, with no chance of parole...

Darlene Cook, the victim's mother, looked at Steed, who was seated in handcuffs and shackles in the courtroom, as she spoke during today’s sentencing. She held a framed photo of Fuqua as she expressed anger over her daughter's death and over unanswered questions as to what happened. “That’s my baby. That’s his momma,” she said, pointing to Fuqua’s son. “How could you do it? I want you to think of that every night as you lay down. I hope you don’t sleep a wink. Not one.”
