AVERA was arrested on 21 May 1982 and transferred to Searcy Hospital in Mount Vernon, Alabama. This was the last known contact with AVERA and her whereabouts are unknown. It was believed for some time that the hospital and/or their law enforcement personnel had taken measures to list AVERA as missing and/or investigate the matter'; however, it was recently found that this was not the case by family members.

I wonder why she was arrest and why she was transferred to a hospital? Was she injured ?

Her family believed either the hospital or law enforcement personnel had filed a missing persons report and that the matter was being investigated

however, it was recently found that this was not the case by family members.

Searcy Hospital - Wikipedia

Formerly a state owned and operated psychiatric hospital. Doesn’t really tell us exactly why she was transferred there at the time of her arrest. I’m no good at finding older arrest records, so maybe someone can find something regarding it.

I've heard of people getting arrested then being sent to be psychiatricly evaluated.

A few cases I know of was someone threatening suicide at the time of their arrest, and another case that was similar where a man having a psychotic break while in possession of a gun and was shooting at the ceiling. My examples are extreme but it's cases I personally know. I'm sure there is plenty of less extreme reasons to be sent to a hospital after an arrest.

I have no idea why there isn't more info on why she was arrested or sent to the hospital. Might be clues hidden there.

Edit: I just noticed her Doe Network profile listed her as disabled missing. My first thought is a untreated bi-polar disorder maybe? Would explain being sent to the hospital after her arrest if she had a untreated disorder.

I created her namus entry. I’m her niece. She was schizophrenic. The hospital told the family she was reported missing. When I started digging into it last year, we found out that she actually was not reported missing

She was arrested for disorderly conduct, I believe. She was transferred to SEARCY because she is schizophrenic. SEARCY then claimed she ran away, they found her, and then she ran away two days later and has never been seen again

She did have a history of that. It would not be unheard of for her to hitch hike. I'm not aware of any relatives in that area.

There is an unidentified person case that may fit these facts from the mid 80s, NamUs UP11097. The young girl roughly matches this description and was found about 4 hours east of where Diane went missing. Sadly she is deceased but I wanted to share in case it may bring closure.

Diane has been discussed as being this Jane Doe on the Jane Doe's thread GA - GA - Newton, WhtFem 522UFGA, 25-30, red white & blue bandanna, May'85

She is still not on the rule out list but they were supposed to be getting DNA from Diane's family to make a comparison.

The last time she was seen by family was May of 1982. As far as anyone can remember, no one seen her after she was sent back to the hospital. The hospital said she escaped in August of 82
