[h=3]Ex-Soldier Extorts $1.4 Million from Casino[/h]6 December 2001

AUSTRALIA – Dec. 6, 2001 –As reported by the West Australian: "A former British SAS soldier used his extensive military knowledge to extort $2 million (US$1.4 million) from Burswood Casino, the District Court was told yesterday."Roger Sidney William Payne, 55, of Westfield, kidnapped and drugged a police officer and forced him to strip naked during the well-planned crime.
"Payne confessed to extortion, threats to kill and threats to influence.
"More than 5000 people were evacuated from the casino on September 1 after he sent a detailed ransom note demanding $2 million.
"…Payne has more than 30 years experience in the British military, is a recipient of the Order of Australia medal in the military division and listed army chief Lt-Gen. Peter Cosgrove as a referee.
"Prosecutor Sarah Linton said Payne sent a four-page ransom letter to the casino on August 31, threatening to detonate bombs hidden at the resort if he was not paid.
"…The next day, Payne rang the casino and demanded the courier take the money to the McDonald's restaurant carpark in Maddington.
"When the courier arrived, Payne pulled out a replica semi-automatic handgun and got into the man's car. He told the courier to drive to a remote location in Kenwick or be shot in the back of the head.
"The courier, an undercover police officer, did not know the gun was a fake. He was forced to drink a sleeping potion and strip naked before being made to run away.
"…Police caught Payne two days later in the Kenwick location when he tried to retrieve the money. He wrote a second threatening letter to the casino from jail.
"…Payne drew on his military knowledge to make detailed threats and ensure the casino reacted…"

For a former SAS soldier, his notoriety is for a botched a ransom job. But then again maybe David Francis Everett and James Reynolds weren't well known until they did bad stuff either.

Anyway, genealogy takes time. A lot of time in verification and suchlike. Take for instance the effort that went into the tree of pioneer families to Western Australia. https://bradyfamilytree.org/genealogy/getperson.php?personID=I29663&tree=BRADY2008 in it there are 1000's of descendants. Some became wealthy and sent their daughters to private schools like Iona, and others who didn't, and sent their sons to Gosnells High School. So it's a big job to ask if someone is related to someone else. It's rare that you'd get a story in the newspaper that says so, unless there's a famous Court case involving relatives fighting over inheritances, or one brother ripping off another in a company.

I don't know if I can negotiate through this but I found a R Cutler with two daughters J and N Culter who's mother dies at a young age. Is it possible you've found an Edwards branch of this family tree PD or is it someone else? ...and famous court case??? I'd appreciate further information.

Did you find a James Edwards?

These are 4 pics of the car , retrieved on cott beach, june 22nd .
Also the car from the missing person poster .
That car may or may not be JC's car afaik.
For comparison of the cars, pics are merged .

all sourced from previous WS posts .

This pics kindly arranged by Meticulously show that RHS of Fiat also has panels on doors pushed in. Although the pattern of the pushed in bits look slightly different comparing left to right side panels, both sides got pushed in and damaged.

Banging against the sand or pylon could do this, or even banging against seaweed covered reefs. The reef may have even crumbled under the weight of the car, hence there was no cut, sliced, or chopped out bits. Plenty of times surfers leave a beach after surfing reef breaks and have taken half the reef away in their foot! Not fun.

Just another option.

B Edwards.
Just go to the surnames list.

Hi Annalise,

After reading the post, DM may have been in Perth when the 45-year-old was attacked and JC went missing. Because DM was charged with committing the two robberies the following year.

Quote, ‘Reason & exact timing unknown, but Morey was in QLD in prison until he escaped custody and fled to Perth where he committed 2x armed robberies in Midland/Guildford on 06Jan89 & 04Apr89.

He returned to the eastern States and was subsequently arrested in Melbourne and extradited to Queensland where he was interviewed in relation to these offences and, upon request by the applicant, was transferred back to Western Australia pursuant to the provisions of the Prisoners (Interstate Transfer) Act 1982 (Qld).

On 4 January 1991, the applicant pleaded guilty before the learned sentencing Judge and was convicted of two counts of armed robbery’.

Thanks CV - I would say DM is responsible for a few more crimes. Maybe even JC!....Annalise

Hi PD
Is that the right branch of the Edwards on the Brady family tree? If so, I'm related to them - not too distantly either! I also know that there are male members of that tree that have completed Ancestry DNA testing. Not sure how closely related a male relative you need for a familial match (although I know it has been discussed lots on WS before. I just can't remember).

It was one week before on 17th June 1988. I think this is the Sunday Times 19th June report with the huge front page headline of Murder Hunt Car Clue.

Detailed description of the car, person of interest, possible connections to 16 unsolved south side rape victims and the murder of Victoria Clark on 9th Sep 1987.

Then Tilbury confesses and is court the next day, Monday 20th June being charged. Even though he doesn't own a car anything like what was pictured and described, didn't know that VD had just visited her boyfriend at CV remand centre even though he supposedly picked her up from close to there, and had no idea why he killed her. They said they were still looking for the Southside rapist after Tilbury's arrest.

VD and her boyfriend were both arrested by the federal police for heroin trafficking into WA from the Eastern States just a few days before her death.
The date is interesting, same day as JC went missing. JC went missing only hours before the court case. About 8 or 9 hours.

A lot went on in June 1988. Was something going on in Perth, was a naval ship in.

Interesting what you've typed about DM perhaps being responsible. There's two instances of a yellow Toyota, including a15-year-old where a woman driving a yellow Toyota helped out.

If Tilbury presented at court on Mon 20, did one of his former prison mates present as a witness.

Could that person have stayed overnight at the Parmelia Hotel, waiting till the morning to go to court.

Certainly didn't want to imply that PD just wanted to highlight the Maddington/Kenwick connection, the fact that he was from Westfield (area of Kelmscott),also capable of kidnapping, drugging and stripping naked a copper, so could easily overpower a female and probably render her silent by temporarily damaging the vocal cords.

He was 55yo in 2001, so 42yo in 1988 when the description seems to be of a younger man. Roughly about the same age as the Sheraton victim but I'm not sure it's a coincidence a 22yo? Julie disappeared in the same area in very similar circumstances and by then he'd improved on his MO.

Ranting the same things at her constantly "You're going to die" randomly picking up tape from a couriers because it happened to be there seems disorganised and a soldier would probably know if she'd be able to get out of it or not. I wonder if this ex SAS soldier has a history of psychotic breaks.

Any assailant that tells a victim mid-crime "you're gonna die, you're gonna die", but then doesn't actually kill the victim, is either:
A) into the torture aspect more,
Or,
B) got interrupted or ran out of time and couldn't follow through with murder.

Ticking box A.

Torture and a bit inexperienced, he was winging this one in some respects.

Also, psycho!

Given it seems attacks on women coincide with the alleged CSK's relationship breakdowns, I wonder if the police have looked into the time period of the Sheraton attack and Julie Cutler's disappearance to clarify whether he may have then been having girlfriend problems.

There were a couple of incidents in June 1988 and when BREs father purchased the Madora Bay home. Thanks to Grok's, Sutton's, Spinnaker's timeline. I wonder if BRE spent any time alone at the Madora Bay home. He would have been 20, and driving a car by then. JMO

Thanks CV,

It's a great timeline, helps put things into some perspective. Nothing is jumping out as far as attacks goes in the periods it appears he was in a committed relationship.

Pity his past girlfriends, not sure I'd want to admit to any kind of romance but to be sure they have had to endure a little investigative probing as to the nature and timing of their relationship.
