Sorry doc I'm on a phone so can't link but one couple on the CCTV lived above the Duchess I saw in MSM. There are four 2 bedroom flats above.

Thanks Possum :) That must be the couple with the round white thing.

I really hope that guy who turned to look has come forward....

Off for some ZZZZs now.:seeya:

Eventually her handbag was recovered in Hope Street but police were convinced it was not there when they checked the area on Saturday afternoon. This meant it had been planted some time later.

This would have initially indicated the offender might have lived nearby. (The reality was a local found the handbag in the lane on Saturday morning then returned on Sunday evening to put it back as a result of the media publicity.)

PIA AKERMAN AND CHIP LE GRAND
From: The Australian September 29, 2012 12:00AM

THE man charged with the rape and murder of ABC Radio employee Jill Meagher is a father of four who once worked as a pastry chef and has a history of using prostitutes.

<snipped>
The Weekend Australian has learned that Ms Meagher's mobile telephone, which had been switched off since shortly after she disappeared on Saturday morning, played a crucial role in the police investigation.
Victoria Police has privately thanked Vodafone for its assistance, but declined to comment on the phone's importance to the investigation.

There was some debate over whether to make to the footage public. Police knew that he would surely be identified once it was released, but if Jill was still alive the consequences would be disastrous.

The truth was police had concluded she was dead. There was further debate over whether releasing the vision could lead the blue hoodie man to destroy evidence, fabricate an alibi, flee or self harm

Thank you Firesnake! Excellent article... A few more snippets below:

The surveillance squad, known as ''The Dogs'', was called in to watch him for two reasons - to check if he acted suspiciously and to ensure he could not strike again.

Police will allege that he eventually told them the story, admitting he grabbed Jill Meagher and took her to a side street where he sexually assaulted her.

Thank you Marlywings I was not aware that the handbag situation had been resolved. Great article too.

Also, because I've been meaning to say this earlier, but was waiting for my account to be registered - Dean's Art, where the second CCTV footage came from isn't an art gallery, it's more an art supply shop. Not that it matters, but just wanted to clarify!

I'm a local from the neighbouring suburb, and was in Sydney Rd earlier for groceries and other errands, and the vigil and flowers are such an overpowering emotional site to see in person. There are far more flowers than in the media pictures from the day. There is no footpath room left!

Her provider, Vodafone, helped track the location of her phone as well as providing call records which assisted detectives in making their arrest.

It is ironic to me that places like Australia and England, which have some of the worst history as far as crime and punishment from a century or so ago, have swung in such an opposite direction and become so dainty about criminal's feelings, etc...anyway, just something I've been thinking about, I've read a lot of books about the days of the "Empire". Not saying they were doing it right back then, but good grief...

Police will allege that he eventually told them the story, admitting he grabbed Jill Meagher and took her to a side street where he sexually assaulted her.

They will produce the videoed confession in which he says he drove to Gisborne, a town 55 kilometres north-west of Melbourne, and used his own shovel to dig a shallow grave to hide his victim.

BBM.

Unbelievable! So he just walks up to a lone woman on the street, grabs her, sexually assaults her, murders and buries her all in one night! And then what, he returns home and his life goes on as normal? FFS! :banghead:

I'm assuming the side street mentioned in the artice above was Hope Street, or more likely the laneway where Jill's bag was found. AB must have had his car parked nearby ready and waiting, complete with a shovel inside. I'm wondering if this is in fact the first time he's killed and buried his victim. Why would he be carrying a shovel around in his car? Perhaps he called into his residence to collect a shovel before heading off to Gisborne. I'm wondering if he has any connections at Gisborne? I'm also wondering why he changed his surname from Edwards to Bayley in 2000.

At least the puzzle of the handbag has been solved. I only wish whoever found it on the Saturday morning had notified the police immediately.

MOO.

On Friday, September 21, she enjoyed birthday drinks for several co-workers on Sydney Road, then had one last drink with her friend and colleague Tom Wright.

The pair left Bar Etiquette at 1.33am (AEST) on Saturday.

"I said, can I walk you home because it's late at night," Mr Wright recalled during a News Limited interview this week.

"She said: 'No, no, I live around here. I know it really well. Don't worry.'"

He asked again and she declined, so Mr Wright jumped in a cab while Ms Meagher continued walking by herself towards her home.

She paused a moment on the way to phone her brother in Perth at 1.43am, asking about their sick father.
