Thank you Mendoza for your informative post. What a dangerous dude to be out of jail on Parole! Congratulations to Victoria Police for ongoing investigations into this dangerous dude's criminal behaviour and bringing these charges before the Court. Hope that the Victorian Parole system will learn that the safety of women and children in the community outweights a prisoner's right to be considered for parole.

I can't help getting the feeling that this whole 'Guilty' plea thing re Jill's case, and all those other rape charges yet to be heard, are all part of some devious plea-bargaining strategy.

I wonder just when he'll be let out again on parole? :stormingmad:

Family members of murdered Melbourne woman Jill Meagher have attended court to express the impact the crime has had on their lives.

Adrian Ernest Bayley, 41, of Coburg, has pleaded guilty to raping and murdering the 29-year-old in Brunswick on September 22 last year.

Ms Meagher's family, including her husband Tom Meagher and her father George McKeon, are at the Victorian Supreme Court for Bayley's plea hearing today

AB's extensive criminal history was just reported on Radio National so I guess the media are now free to report on it. Hopefully this will start a discussion about the parole board in Victoria.

THE man who killed Jill Meagher was a serial rapist on parole for previous offences when he raped and murdered the young ABC employee.

The Victorian Supreme Court today heard details of Adrian Ernest Bayley's criminal history as he apologised to Meagher's family through his lawyer, who asked that a non-parole period be set on Bayley's likely life sentence to give him some “hope” in prison.

And this is from the ABC's Victorian court reporter - the judge has lifted the suppression order:

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-06-...meagher-killer-adrian-bayley-revealed/4745406

The Melbourne man who has pleaded guilty to murdering ABC employee Jill Meagher has a long history of violent attacks on women and has admitted faking his way through a sex offenders' program, a court has heard.

Adrian Ernest Bayley was also allowed to continue parole despite being convicted of assault.

Today in the Victorian Supreme Court, Justice Geoffrey Nettle lifted a suppression order and details of Bayley's history can now be revealed.

The 41-year-old Coburg man has an extensive history of rape and violence.

The Victorian Parole Board failed to cancel his parole after a violent assault and a judge's warning that the public needed to be protected from him.

Bayley's history of violent attacks on women spans more than two decades, the court was told

More - much more - at the link above.

Some REALLY serious questions need to be asked about the Parole Board - a lot more than we already surmised.

I'm glad that the suppression order has been lifted, things need to change, NOW!!! I hope that this will be the catalyst for change, these things cannot continue to happen, too many innocents are being assaulted and killed by people that simply should not be free!!!

I'm so hurt and disgusted by this crime, and I didn't even know Jill .. her poor husband!

Guys can you explain this.... for the life of me it doesn't make sense to me?

"Bayley's barrister Saul Holt SC said his client accepted a life sentence was likely, but asked for a non-parole period to be set to give him hope in prison."

taken from- http://www.theaustralian.com.au/new...agher-court-told/story-e6frg6nf-1226661847949

Well I certainly don't agree that Bayley should ever get parole.

A life sentence can include a period of non-parole. After this period, the parole board can either grant release or continue imprisonment. For serious offenders, the court can sentence life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. I suppose Bayley is asking for the possibility of parole.

Here is a link to a document detailing life sentences handed down in Victoria from 2007 to 2012. It shows different periods of non-parole set, ranging from 6 to 35 years. "Of the 119 people who were sentenced to imprisonment for murder, all were eligible to have a non-parole period fixed. Of these people, 113 were given a non-parole period (95%)". Approximately 5 people were sentenced to life without parole.
