Australia Australia - Marion Barter - Missing After Trip to UK - June 1997 #22

There is also a link to this book and a Media Branding Company with a Malaysia address but out of China

I might be grasping straws with this one, but I seem to recall that AH asked E.Ried about working with him in regard to insurance policies and splitting the difference, in regards to people in China. Can anyone recall that ? It was on the podcast or television doco??
Recall ER saying that he had proposed that he and ER collaborate on Life Insurance fraud, but don’t recall China or any other specific location being mentioned. It was either on the Spotlight interview or on a TLV podcast episode.

I log in daily, in hopes of seeing news of an arrest.

Is this an impossible hope?
If only :-(

I attended the Conversations with Sally & Joni in Randwick yesterday evening and it doesn’t seem like NSW police are making any further progress on the case. It’s all gone quiet. Unless some new evidence is uncovered, no further action will be taken.

As we all know, a thorough international investigation of AKA’s financial affairs by a forensic accountant is well overdue. This can only be instigated by NSW Police.

The OIC of Marion’s case, SP, who also interviewed AKA in 2021, has been heavily involved in the recent high profile case regarding the alleged double murder in Sydney of the gay couple by a currently serving member of NSW Police. Can’t imagine SP is going to have much spare time to devote to finding Marion. SL says it’s 2 years since she has spoken to SP.

While detectives discovered AKA in Sept/Oct 2020, they didn’t get around to interviewing him until June of the following year.

During the inquest, NSW Police put more energy into trying to shift the blame onto SL for their woeful lack of action than they put into finding Marion. Absolutely disgraceful.

I would struggle to imagine that a woman wrote this book, unless she hates herself and other women very, very, much. I would be mortified to publish a book like this and people who know me read it.

There's some 'seepage' / 'leakage' throughout the badly written stories as I already mentioned is the writer across a few stories drops common ideas about protagonist.

They suggest they are:

A wry observer of life (they aren't)
An outsider
Somewhat genius (they aren't)
Has a true gift with words, to write in a way that others can't (untrue)
Employed as travelogue writer
Are a loner, are not good with people, prefer own company
Others find them fascinating due to above
Speak multiple languages but NOT Balinese
Feel angry / excluded / resentful about not speaking Balinese
Aren't interested in showy wealth or possessions
Prefer life 'on the road' / travelling / being on the move
Have spiritual leanings, found god, consult with shamans
Ex-pat gone to Indonesia
Left behind former life / lives with no regrets
About to leave current life with no regret
Zero sentiment or emotions bar lust, anger, fatigue
In one chapter, uses viagra for sex as if that's 'normal'
Loathes western women who have relationships with young Indonesian men
Appreciates furniture, antiques, fine wine, classical music
Contempt for others
Vindictive and executes retribution inc violence, arson
Migrated due to living off some form of income they don't have to earn
Speaks of property in estate agent type terms as opposed to descriptions
If any children always two from past relationship, no sentiment or development
Always has a local sidekick / assistant who inexplicably helps them out a lot
Health problems, feeling older, feeling wearing, reflecting on life
Loathes foreigners / 'newcomers' even though they are one

I will return to this book more and try to break some of it down - for example scrutinise examples of dialogue - there is very little throughout.
Very interesting observations. It certainly does have all of AKA’s traits. Surely there can’t be a clone of him operating out there…

JMO but NSW Police are probably hoping Aka pops his clogs and they can file Marion’s papers in the unsolved drawer.

Even with all the recent publicity through the TLV Podcast the case has moved at snails pace. IMHO the Inquest dragged on far too long too.

More than 26 years after Marion disappeared can holding back evidence on the basis this is still an ongoing investigation really be justified?

Exactly !

The book isnt about her and her views and feelings. She's writing through the eyes of others.

Which is why I think she wrote that book about his stories and also entwined stories of others who live in Bali or stayed in Bali for some time.

I will also add she is a classical pianist, its in one of her videos.

IMO she is the author of the book, writing about people she knows and stories she heard. Those stories include his.

Somehow she knows him and used his name as the author.

He didn't write this book.

Far too obvious for him to add his most recent name to a book linked to Bali.

Maybe this is a way for her to get square with what he did to her??
I dont know.

But she wrote that book.

JMO

And I am sorry to hear that the chances of proceeding with criminal charges are looking slim. Can a civil suit go ahead?
From the Brisbane talks I wouldnt say no criminal charges will be forthcoming. This is why they are travelling OS to gather much more concrete evidence.
There can be another inquest in the future. Its happened before in other cases.

They wont stop until he is charged.

It's deplorable isnt it.
SL could potentially sue NSW police for their disgusting lack of interest in her initial request for help. That right there, if they had done their job, could have stopped future victims of his.

Earlier in this thread, someone recommended the documentary "The Thief Collector." I watched it last night, and it really creeped me out. I watch and listen to a lot of true crime, but this story takes the cake. I don't want to give away too much, but one of the creepiest things is a book of short stories written by the perpetrator. It wasn't enough to commit the crimes and not get caught, for the perp, people HAD to know the details of his crimes. The doc is free on Amazon Prime and a bunch of other venues. -- I couldn't locate the post recommending it but thank you to the person who did and who wrote how this story offers some similarities to RB. Yes, it really does.

You would think the Police Department would want to step up and make an effort to remake their image by actively pursuing Marion's case. Sadly, humans can be jerks and it may be that their retaliation for being called out by the coroner is to dig in heels and not be of help.

Unfortunately, Amazon Prime in Australia doesn’t have it yet but will keep hoping we can see it soon! Another platform "DocPlay” (which I haven’t heard of) has it, but not willing to try unless someone can recommend it.

The other person who is the actor reading the Book - I dont want to say his full name here - but if you can get a chance to read all the info on him and his family - including one of his sisters - and the years they were living in the UK etc - makes for an interesting thought with this Book

That was me, @MrsEmmaPeel! And I agree. I was thoroughly unsettled by it (but also couldn’t help watching it twice).

On the other hand, it was also a great example of ordinary people doing the right thing, especially in the face of law enforcement complacency … much like we have seen in this case (and this thread, every day).

Mm I noticed he wrote the book a glowing review!

Thank you, @KathPlumber!!! I watch every true crime doc and listen to podcasts regularly. I can’t believe “The Thief Collector” slipped past me— especially since I live in New Mexico and have driven through the Alter’s remote home location. The correlation with this case of a man who committed crimes his whole life and never suffered consequences and who thought he was smarter than everyone is eerie. To me this explains a lot about how RB charmed everyone and got away with it all. It also makes me wonder if he collaborated on the book with a team of Bali friends as a narcissistic lark— meanwhile laying his life of crime out for all to see. Just like Jerry Alter did in New Mexico. — FWIW on Reddit a viewer wondered if Alter might be D B Cooper and/or the thief behind Isabella Stewart Gardiner museum, Boston, unsolved theft in 1990. Hmmmmmm…
