I am nodding my head. There is a difference between being fundamentally troubled and hopeless vs being cold-hearted and vindictive. But I also wonder if a person could be both. (When evil people lose their minds.)

IMO a person can be troubled and feel hopeless, but still love and care for their child/ren. Many parents struggle with divorce, financial hardship, grief, In-Laws, family tensions, but they don't murder their child/ren. On the other hand, some people may have an underlying cold-heartedness which has been masked, then following stressful events, they may act out their vindictiveness on their child/ren.

The case here may involve both mental health and legal assessments to determine the degree of 'mad' and 'bad'.
1) Was the murder caused by underlying 'madness' i.e. major mental illness which rendered the murderer 'mentally incompetent' at that time?
2) Was the murder caused by 'badness' i.e. a preexisting character/personality disorder, with a desire to punish the other parent and a desire to get rid of the child?
These things are yet to be determined.
Thankfully CCTV captured the actions of the murderer in this case - without which this case would be much more difficult to investigate.
The attempt to cover-up the murder and in addition, contrive a scenario to 'blame' someone else - looks ominous in this case.
My opinion only.

The relatives of a Melbourne woman who confessed to killing her baby have received death threats from people accusing them of being complicit in the killing.

This surprises me. How could anyone else be complicit if she and her baby, and no one else, went for a walk and she alone returned with scratches and dirt on her elbows claiming that a stranger took the baby?

Are these online bullies acting like vigilantes who believe they are alerting the public to a conspiracy behind the mother who murdered her child (like Andrea Yeates), or are they simply nasty people who delight in inflicting emotional pain?

THE relatives of slain baby Sanaya Sahib are living in fear after having their lives threatened by “callous” people since the little girl was killed.

Members of the Melbourne public have wrongly “made assumptions” that relatives of the 14-month-old toddler were involved in her death, and have lashed out at them, a senior police officer says.

In a letter to The Age, North West Divisional Commander Superintendent Tim Hansen said the family had been the subject of attacks in their home, in public and online.

Death of Heidelberg West toddler Sanaya Sahib was infanticide, not murder, court told

A woman who killed her 14-month-old daughter in Melbourne's north-east has pleaded not guilty to murder, with lawyers arguing her postnatal depression pointed to infanticide.
Sofina Nikat, 23, has been committed to stand trial for the murder of toddler Sanaya Sahib, who was found dead in a creek at Heidelberg West last year.
The court heard Nikat had admitted killing her daughter by covering her airways and throwing her into the water.

Imam told mum her 'toddler was possessed by evil spirit' before alleged murder
by Jane Lee

Sofina Nikat, 23, was struggling to care for her daughter, Sanaya Sahib, who had become particularly irritable and constantly demanding months before her death, a police summary released by the court on Wednesday said... Ms Nikat had told her cousin she wanted to kill herself and her daughter, seemingly out of frustration at Sanaya's behaviour in the weeks and months before the alleged murder, the summary said...

Magistrate Luisa Bazzani rejected defence lawyer Christopher Dane QC's argument that she could only commit his client to a trial for infanticide, which carries a lower moral culpability and penalty than murder...

INFANTICIDE vs MURDER?

March 16, 2017. 8:40am
THE mother accused of killing her 14-month old daughter told Victoria Police a priest said her baby was possessed.

"Nikat told police she put her hand across Sanaya’s mouth and nose and hugged her tight until she couldn’t feel her daughter moving. She then walked down to the creek bed and dropped her daughter’s limp body in Darebin Creek near scrubland."...

Magistrate Luisa Bazzani upheld the murder charge, citing that the psychiatrist’s evidence had not been tested.
The case will return to Melbourne Magistrates’ Court for a directions hearing on Friday.
