PHOENIX (KPHO/KTVK) -
Three people, all 18 years old, have been arrested in what law enforcement authorities are calling a copycat crime in connection with freeway shootings that have plagued the Phoenix area since Aug. 29.

The apprehensions came after a man and wife in their vehicle reported a car came up alongside theirs Saturday night. The three occupants used a slingshot and granite rocks to shatter their window, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said.

“The victims were smart enough to get the license plate of the vehicle that pulled up alongside.,” Arpaio said.

It happened at State Route 24 and Ellsworth.

Thanks for the update, Foxfire.

I was thinking last night about how quickly these copycats seem to spring into action, and how that possibly applies to us here in NOCO.

That would be the arrest made at the market yesterday, this one is the same

First thing that crosses my mind is "yep, young punks" (my initial impression of NOCO)...but thinking about this further, yes young punks indeed, but at 18 years old, that makes them ADULTS.

Thank you for the heads up on this, Foxfire. The whole thing sounds like some of what was seen on that video, but these guys were easy to spot. Do you think because of awareness or because they were just copycats?

PHOENIX (KPHO/KTVK) -

Three people, all 18 years old, have been arrested in what law enforcement authorities are calling a copycat crime in the wake of a string of freeway shootings that have plagued the Phoenix area since Aug. 29.

The apprehensions came after a man and wife in their vehicle reported a car came up alongside theirs Saturday night. The three occupants used a slingshot and granite rocks to shatter the driver's side window of the victim's car, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said.

“The victims were smart enough to get the license plate of the vehicle that pulled up alongside.,” Arpaio said.

It happened at State Route 24 and Ellsworth.

The teens admitted shooting at six pedestrians and seven vehicles from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday.

They were booked into jail on charges of criminal damage and conspiracy. MCSO, DPS and Mesa police worked together on the case.

Col. Frank Milstead, director of the Arizona Department of Public Safety. also confirmed the incidents were “copycat crimes.”

“We don’t think what happened on the east side is anything related to what we have going on the west side,” Milstead said.

Hey, those guys even got a crisis hotline, I'm jealous lol:

"DPS Director Col. Frank Milstead and Gov. Doug Ducey have been appealing to the public all week for help solving the freeway shootings case.

In addition to the tipline, a dedicated 24-hour crisis hotline has been activated for people who are anxious about the freeway shootings.

That hotline number is 1-800-203-2273."

Snip

"Authorities have appealed for help through social media, news conferences, TV interviews and freeway message boards, whose messages morphed from "report suspicious activity" to "shooting tips" to the more ominous "I-10 shooter tip line.""

WHO KILLED JOHN JACOBY AND WILLIAM CONNOLE? WHO SHOT CORI ROMERO IN THE NECK?! WHY ALL THE SILENCE ABOUT NOCO!!!!!!! MAYBE IF THEY TAKE A DIFFERENT APPROACH, WE COULD HAVE SOMEONE IN CUSTODY, LIKE AZ DOES!! (COPYCAT OR NOT!)

Take some credit for that, thread denizens. Together, we've been writing the case history for the NOCO shootings, and drawing some lessons from it that the AZ people seem to be applying.

Echoes of NOCO.

[In Colorado, on April 28th, 2015] "A driver was reporting an observation from two weeks earlier [so about April 15th]. They reported seeing someone shoot a "wrist rocket" slingshot at a semi-truck driving northbound on I-25 at mile marker 245." [That's a little north of Longmont, CO.]

Source: Marshall, Zelinger 7 News Denver: http://www.thedenverchannel.com/new...indow-incidents-on-northern-colorado-highways.

Notice that in Phoenix, the sling shot attackers are the only perps ever to have been seen in action. The same is true of the NOCO I-25 window shatterings, to our knowledge. What is it about using guns firearms or airguns that allows it to be so much more stealthy? Could it be that their greater range allows off-road shooting? Or that they can be shot thru little holes built into vehicles?

I'd be very interested in these three or more copycats' gaming activity online and off-line (paintball/lazer tag)? What could they have come across that could have similarities to the NOCO 1 25 corridor shootings/shatterings?

Catching up and read back through some good discussions.

I think the bottom line is everyone reacts differently to these types of situations with some experiencing more anxiety than others. The good thing with people such as ourselves is we are taking steps to inform ourselves.

Having knowledge of what is going on is a huge advantage. At least we are now aware and more observant than most. The innocent naive person that is ignorant of what is going on is more likely to be the next victim of something like this.

We are more informed and we can take common sense steps that help us not be the next target. For example if there is a box truck beside us up ahead on the highway, we don't have to pull up alongside them or pass them. We can slow and stay behind them and get cars between us and the box truck. Little things like that we are probably doing without realizing it because its a natural reaction because we are now informed and aware of our surroundings. Or if we do have to pass a box truck, then we do it as quick and safely as we can and then stay ahead of them and get cars between us and them and keep an eye on the truck.

Or take the same action with any other vehicle that looks a little out of the ordinary or passengers behaving strangely.

Little things but simple common sense things that we are doing because we are now aware.

The good news is like one article said is the odds are still so minimal that we should be fine and not have to worry too much. With that said, we dont want to do things that increase our odds. Its tough with these cases because they are so random but there are things we are learning and the more we learn the more we can do without inconveniencing ourselves too much.

Eloquently said, Hatfield. I appreciate your always well thought out posts, but especially this one. Thank you and good to see you.

http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/arizona-authorities-raise-freeway-shooter-reward-50-000-n427351

Authorities in Arizona pleaded for information related to a series of unsolved freeway shootings on Monday, more than doubling a reward for any tip that leads to an arrest.

The shootings — there have been 11 in two weeks along Interstate 10 in Phoenix — have been described as domestic terrorism and compared to the sniper attacks in Washington D.C. that left 10 people dead a decade ago.

http://www.azcentral.com/story/news.../dps-increase-reward-i-10-shootings/72269756/

The Arizona Department of Public Safety has received nearly 1,000 tips since the Phoenix-area freeway shootings started on Aug. 29, but troopers are still seeking the one that will lead to the arrest of the person or people responsible.

DPS Director Frank Milstead announced at a press conference late Monday that several law-enforcement organizations combined to more than double the reward leading to arrests and convictions to $50,000 from $20,000.

"I have not received the tip I'm looking for, at least to my knowledge,'' Milstead told a large group of reporters gathered around him near the memorial to DPS troopers killed in the line of duty. "I know someone out there has the information I am looking for and I am willing to pay for it.''
<BBM>

Milstead asked Arizonans to remain vigilant and alert while driving and to continue calling in tips, saying he does not discount the enormity of the danger, even as time passes.

"People's lives are at risk and the public is terrified. The only way to put Arizona back to normal is to solve this case,'' he said.

http://www.cnn.com/2015/09/16/us/phoenix-police-officer-shot/index.html

(CNN)A Phoenix police officer was shot and seriously injured early Wednesday while making a traffic stop, and the shooter or shooters are on the loose, city police said.

The officer was shot more than once shortly after initiating a traffic stop in central Phoenix around 2:45 a.m., near 12th Street and Campbell Avenue, Phoenix police Sgt. Jonathan Howard said.

"Thank goodness he was wearing his (body armor) vest," police Chief Joseph Yahner told reporters, adding that rounds struck the armor.

The officer, whose name wasn't released, was at a hospital in serious condition Wednesday morning but is expected to recover, police said.
__________________________________________________________

<paraphrasing> Fox News Live:
Officer was wearing Vest, is expected to survive. Nothing indicating this incident related to the AZ I-10 Sniper Investigation
according to Officials.. Vehicle of perps, later located abandoned.

Officers everywhere seem to have a target on their backs. It's sickening!!
I wonder if the officers shooting is connected to THE shootings? Or if this is just another lowlife cop shooter?
