Riverside Community Hospital Staff to Picket ‘Unsafe’ Working Conditions

“Following the death of two of their co-workers from COVID-19, Riverside Community Hospital staff plan to picket outside the facility Friday because of what they say is a lack of personal protective equipment.

“Workers report widespread shortages of PPE and the unsafe recycling of single-use equipment like masks and gloves,” said Steve Trossman, a spokesman for SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West, the union that represents more than 1,000 employees at the hospital.“

“In May, Rosa Luna, a housekeeper of 25 years died from the virus, union officials said.

“She suffered a horrible, horrible death. This not like the flu. It’s a thousand times worse,” Luna’s daughter Dora Reaza told NBC4.”

[...]

““We’re risking our lives every single day,” Raymond Valdivia, a nursing assistant at Riverside Community, said in a statement. “But HCA management isn’t giving us the PPE we need or telling us if we’ve been exposed to COVID-19, even after two co-workers died from exposure and more are coming down with the virus. It’s not safe for us or our patients. Do we have to see more hospital workers die while HCA collects billions from taxpayer bailouts?”“

California School Closing Brings Parent Angst and Economic Worry
Students across most of California won’t be able to attend school in person this fall, Governor Gavin Newsom announced Friday, dealing another setback to efforts at restarting the world’s fifth-largest economy and possibly spurring similar orders nationwide.“

[...]

““The virus will be with us for a year or more, and school districts must provide meaningful instruction in the midst of this pandemic,” Newsom said Friday. “In California, health data will determine when a school can be physically open -– and when it must close –- but learning should never stop. Students, staff, and parents all prefer in-classroom instruction, but only if it can be done safely.”“

L.A. County surpasses 4,000 COVID-19 deaths to cap a record-breaking week

“Los Angeles County has seen a record-breaking week when it comes to the rapid spread of the coronavirus.

More than 4,000 Los Angeles County residents have now died from causes related to COVID-19, and more than 150,000 cases of the virus have been recorded, authorities announced Friday.”

“”The simple truth of this fight is that this virus is affecting more and more of us every day,” Garcetti said.”

“We are finding it increasingly difficult to find non-impacted hospitals. ... There's [sic] 10,000 different pandemics burning across 10,000 counties in the United States. ... We all need to recognize that we all play a role, and that physical distancing, wearing your masks, washing your hands is part of a community sense of responsibility.

We understand that you can't just shut the economy down forever because that will kill people too. And I don't envy leadership in trying to balance these forces. But when the health care system becomes overwhelmed, that's when really society runs into serious problems. ... Our doctors, and nurses, and respiratory therapists, and phlebotomists are coming to work every day going into the danger zone. We need the public to work with us to control the rate at which patients are coming to the hospital.””

[...]

“More what we see are problems of spread within families that are living in crowded environments, where it's difficult to self isolate at home.

… We do have to be sensitive and respectful to the fact that there is economic damage that this virus causes. And people can die from the virus, but they can also starve to death, and people have to make a living. And that's that balance that's very hard to strike. But I think [it] becomes imbalanced when we allow the cases to progress at a rate that the health system simply can't handle anymore.””

“Los Angeles County public health officials on Sunday reported 2,848 newly confirmed cases of the coronavirus, with the majority of those infected under the age of 41, as related hospitalizations reached a new high.

There are currently 2,216 people hospitalized with the virus, the county Health Department reported. This is the fifth consecutive day with hospitalizations higher than 2,100 and the first time hospitalizations have surpassed 2,200.

Among those hospitalized, 26% are in intensive care units and 19% are on ventilators.

As the dangerous surge in infections continues, L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti delivered a fresh warning Sunday during an appearance on CNN that the city was “on the brink” of imposing new restrictions to prevent the spread of the virus. But he did not elaborate.“

UC Berkeley to begin fall semester with remote instruction

“The increase in cases in the local community is of particular concern. Given this development, as well as it being unlikely that there will be a dramatic reversal in the public health situation before the fall semester instruction begins on Aug. 26, we have made the difficult decision to begin the fall semester with fully remote instruction. However, we continue our preparations to implement hybrid and/or flexible modes of instruction as soon as public health conditions allow.“

California Reports More Coronavirus Cases Than New York

“There have now been more than 422,000 cases announced in California, the most of any state, according to The New York Times’s database. New York, with more than 413,000 known cases, had the most until Wednesday.

California also broke its single-day record, with more than 12,100 new cases announced.”

[...]

“Gov. Gavin Newsom said on Wednesday that as the state scrambles to expand testing, it expected to find more cases. The challenge for the state, he said, was to sustain its virus response.

“We are not going to let off in our day-to-day monitoring and our technical assistance,” he said. “We’ll see those numbers increase and as a consequence, we need to be more vigilant and more aware of our personal behaviors and our collective behaviors.””

Like trying to put toothpaste back in the tube, Valley Children’s Hospital is tired of hearing a narrative that kids aren’t affected by COVID-19.

Todd Suntrapak, president and CEO of Valley Children’s Healthcare called statements that youngsters don’t get the coronavirus or suffer consequences “a disservice to our children.”

WHEN I WANT TO LEARN ABOUT THE LATEST COVID NEWS AND THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS ABOUT IT I COME TO THIS THREAD. AMAZING INFORMATION AND ARTICLES EVERYONE... @margarita25 you out-did yourself on what is happening in CA. I went to HS in Willows CA and my aunt lives in La Canada CA.

For people who don't think Covid will hurt them more than the flu, so they are driving up numbers by gathering and socializing in large crowds, or yelling angrily about masks, or exposing family members after being in crowds, they might want to get their hearts checked.

If you engage in crowd/group socializing or even
one-on-one with those who do, you may have had the virus - unaware of it- and could be walking around with an inflamed heart. And if you know you had it you may think your %100 safe from now on....think again. Was the Wedding reception, graduation party, birthday party, barbeque, dancing, trip to Disney, ralley, concert, flying on vacation, not wearing a mask, worth it?
